Roger spends his time in Boston in the afternoon watching Dark Shadows (1966), specifically a scene with Barnabas and Dr. Julia Hoffman. The gothic ABC soap opera aired at 4 pm, Monday though Friday, and featured plotlines that spanned the 1700s through the 1960s centered on the immortal vampire, Barnabas.
Brianna and Roger are distantly related, as they are both direct descendants of Jacob and Anne MacKenzie. Brianna is their great-granddaughter through their daughter, Ellen, who was Jamie Frazer's mother. Roger's ancestry goes back directly to Jamie's uncle, Dougal Mackenzie, who was Jacob and Anne's son. Information from the books indicates there are seven generations from Dougal to Roger. That makes Brianna and Roger second cousins, five times removed.
When examining the bones of the Caribbean murder victim, Claire says, 'Bones don't lie', which is also a common phrase in Bones (2005). The protagonist of that show uses this phrase to explain her love for forensic anthropology, a field which uses similar techniques to the ones used by Claire and Dr Abernathy to identify the cause of death based on skeletons.
