This is the first short film Kari Oh, and illustrator and 2D animator recently graduated from the NY School of Animation. According to an interview she gave to "Lost at E Minor" her main inspirations for this film are: the plastic bag scene in American Beauty, and BJ Miller's TED talk, 'What Really Matters at the End of Life' as well as the story of a famous singer whose parents were both deaf. She has fused all the thoughts and feelings in one and turned them into a very simply but mindful mini-short.
Oh wrote, directed, animated and edited her first film, and the voice of the character is also hers.
The film is very well drawn and animated. The drawing is beautiful, clean, airy, luminous and with wonderful golden hues set somewhere in New York. It has a very fresh realistic atmosphere, very cinematic movement, and it is very intimate, just two characters and the viewer.
The title captures what this animated film is about: it captures a moment in life, but it is mindful. The questions it poses is, how do we see into other people? How do we get into their soul? What does an artist look for to capture the individual being painted? Not much happens, it is just two minutes. But it shows a great insight and promises great things from the director in the future.
Finalist for Best Animation at Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival 2016.
