Violent Night was one of this fan’s best moviegoing experiences from last year (read our review). The latest from filmmaker Tommy Wirkola is a gleeful, funny, brutal, and shockingly sweet modern take on a familiar formula. And it all works. The film includes David Harbour in a role tailor-made for him as a badass Santa Claus. Then there is John Leguizamo, Beverly D’Angelo, Alexis Louder, and the terrific Leah Brady. The cast collected is perfection.
Harbour’s take on kick-ass Claus is a rollicking good time. One of the best moments in the bloody action flick is when Santa disposes of several members of an Extraction Team. It’s a viciously intense scene that features one of the most excellent weapons in any movie, a candy cane. And yes, that thing is sharp with some help from old St. Nick and his teeth. It’s a wild experience to...

Saturday Night Live’s Christmas episode was largely curtailed as a result of Covid. The long-running NBC series aired a handful of original sketches with host Paul Rudd as well as a Tina Fey co-hosted Weekend Update. But it filled the time with a slew of classic old clips.
Tom Hanks, joining the show in a surprise appearance, introduced his 1991 sketch “The Global Warming Christmas Special,” which featured Hanks as Dean Martin, Mike Myers as Carl Sagan, and Dana Carvey as Paul McCartney.
Vanessa Bayer and Ryan Gosling’s Santa and his elves sketch, from 2015, also aired.
Kenan Thompson, who along with Michael Che were the only current cast members on the show, introduced the clip. “This is one of my favorite Christmas sketches, not only because I love watching sweet, innocent Vanessa Bayer as a naughty elf but I remember how much fun it was being in the office...

'Tis the season for joyful holiday covers. On Sunday, JoJo paid tribute to "the queen of Christmas music" as she sang Mariah Carey's "Miss You Most (at Christmas Time)." "Wanted to sing one of my favorite Christmas songs and pay homage to the Queen Mariah Carey," she wrote alongside the video. "Imagine being so dope that you single handedly own an entire holiday season!!!?! Her voice and writing has enchanted and inspired me since I was a little girl."
Clearly the adoration is mutual. After JoJo posted the cover, Carey gave her seal of approval. "Thank you for this beautiful homage!" she wrote on JoJo's Instagram. "I'm so happy you chose this song that not many people know. It's one of my favorite Christmas songs that I've written. Love!!! Mc."...

The Mavericks are the Swiss Army knife of bands, capable of doing everything from rock & roll to Tex-Mex to jazz and soul. Now approaching their 30th anniversary, singer Raul Malo and co. breathe new life into the holiday season with Hey! Merry Christmas!, their new Christmas album.
Far from a tired genre exercise, the new LP — released earlier this month on the band’s Mono Mundo Recordings — features eight original songs penned by Malo and a handful of cowriters, plus covers of Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home...
