In real life, Josef Mengele worked at Auschwitz, while Ilse Koch, as her nickname "the Bitch of Buchenwald" suggests, worked at Buchenwald. They were never married, as portrayed in the film. Koch's husband, Karl-Otto Koch, was commandant of Buchenwald. He was transferred to the Majdanek camp in 1941, but Ilse stayed at Buchenwald.
