The very strong key
TheLittleSongbird23 May 2022
As has been indicated already in my reviews for the previous 'The Walking Dead' episodes, Season 8 was a real disappointment on the whole. Regarding the previous Season 8 episodes, there were a few pleasant surprises in "Some Guy", "The Big Scary U" and especially "The Lost and the Plunderers", but the rest were lacklustre at best and pretty dreadful in the case of half of them. This is not meant in a vitriolic way just to say. So expectations were rather mixed for "The Key".

Luckily, "The Key" is in the hits and pleasant surprises category, easily one of the best of Season 8 and better than most episodes of Season 7. It is not flawless or one of the classics of 'The Walking Dead' (which was a truly great show in its prime, until the hit and miss Season 6 and it's not been same really since), but it has very few of the many big flaws that plagued most of Season 8. And is also even better than "The Lost and the Plunderers", containing all its strengths and executing them even better.

"The Key" isn't perfect. There are a few too many close ups and they are rather self-indulgent and at times unnecessary.

Pacing could have been tighter and Negan's invincibility still is being taken too far.

However, a lot works very well. Everything with Rick and Negan to me did have tension and of the thrilling kind, Negan's invincibility does annoy but Negan has more menace here than he has had in a long time and his dialogue is not as long winded as it usually is. Both Rick and Negan to me advanced as characters as did their stories and conflict. There is more action than there has been in the previous episodes and this time it is action that is actually interesting to watch and had the right amount of intensity, the choreography not being chaotic or too show off-like. The performances are strong, excellent in the case of Andrew Lincoln, Steven Ogg and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Most of the production values are atmospheric and have nice style, in one of the better looking episodes of the season. Music is haunting. The dialogue is this time thought provoking and tighter, nowhere near as many long-winded speeches or rambling self-indulgence. Plenty goes on outside of the Rick and Negan story, the development for Maggie standing out, and it doesn't come over as sprawling or like it was trying to do too much. There isn't the too many characters feel that most of the previous Season 8 episodes suffered from.

After being so underwhelming at best in the first half, signs of improvement was seen with the previous episode and particularly this. Very well done overall. 8/10.

First Great Episode This Season
alibush30 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This was the first great episode of The Walking Dead in a long time in my opinion. Probably since 7x01. And yes, it was mainly because of the Rick and Negan fight. The Rick/Negan aspect of this episode was exactly what we wanted from All Out War. My only complaint with this aspect of the episode is that Rick is supposed to be a great shooter, and he could barely shoot Negan this episode. Why? Oh yeah cuz Negan is invincible and we still need him. Outside of the Rick/Negan stuff, this episode was still pretty decent with the stuff at the Hilltop with Georgie which could mean there could be a time jump in the show, and the Dwight/Simon stuff.

Overall, I thought this episode was pretty great and the saviors drenching their weapons in walker guts is an interesting idea

Good episode, bad season.
hansecalums27 March 2018
This is the only episode I've genuinely enjoyed so-far this season- so I give it props for that. Perhaps this episode only seems great because of how bad the other episodes have been.

The best episode of the season!!! A great episode with a good pace and great direction and action
MomentIMDB9 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 12 is a great improvement from the previous episode. The episode has several plots and all are well developed. good points: the inclusion of georgie to the plot is something fresh and very interesting, something to give us a glimpse of what comes in the series. Michigan and Magie have a good development. Simon was incredible, in this episode his intelligence grew quite a lot and he became a very good villain and his interaction with Dwight was very good. Rick and Deny together are amazing and spectacular. Both actors achieve a great interpretation of their characters and their chemistry is very good. Rick and Negan's fight was very good and using a dark spot lit with the bat burned was a great touch for the episode. The cliffhanger was very good. bad points: none !!!!

The Walking Dead is not dead yet!
harlandrakon21 March 2018
TWD really had me worried for a good while, especially in the first half of season eight. Despite the opinion of many, I found season seven to be perfectly decent, albeit rather slow and with some bad editing here and there. However, it brought a serious problem to the show that stretched all the way through the first half of season eight, which I believe is very important to discuss.

That problem is Negan. Not Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is a stellar actor and leaves little to be desired in his representation, but rather the effect that his domineering presence has left on the rest of the characters. To be more clear, what was once a show about suspense, survival and human nature in a new world ravaged by flesh-eating monstrosities, suddenly turned into a bit of a dull mess with too many characters that we don't care about, while the ones we do care about started to act very strange and almost out of character. Rick became way too timid and careful, Daryl blank as a paper sheet, and the others were hardly even noticed thanks to the huuuge increase in cast numbers and thus less screen time (and money, mind you) for each character to develop. For instance, Morgan, who was easily one of the most human and relatable characters in the early seasons, was getting destroyed by the constant switching between ''All Life Is Precious'' and ''I Am The Terminator''. Basically, the necessities of the plot had seriously damaged the writing and ''flow'' of the entire show. How do our heroes defeat the big bad Negan? They acquire the help of a TON of new characters who have very little time to become relevant and likeable.

Finally, at the half-point of season eight, the show experienced a steady rise, and we can hopefully (and finally) return to the greatness. This episode is a great example of the resolving of most of these issues. Stellar acting, convincing dialogue that makes us really think about what these characters are going through, excellent pacing, and great action/brawl sequences. I was seriously immersed in this episode.

Should the show continue with episodes such as this one, I see absolutely no reason for it to stop airing any time soon.

Is Rick Now a Bad Shot?
claudio_carvalho21 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Negan and his minions head to Hilltop, but Rick intercepts Negan and fight him in a derelict building surrounded by walkers. Meanwhile Maggie, Michonne, Rosita and Enid head to an encounter in a crossroad with strangers.

"The Key" could have been one of the best episodes of this season of "The Walking Dead"; unfortunately it is not. Rick´s show down with Negan is deceptive with Rick wasting bullets missing the target. However along the Seasons, he is not a bad shot; in the decisive moment, he misses all his shots to an unarmed Negan. Ridiculous! Jadis in the right place in the right time is also terrible. My vote is seven.

NEVER AGAIN DO IT!
ottawa10119 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I ranked this as a 6/10 but the show was on a whole, much better. I think it was a 9/10 really but they lose 3 points because yet again, Rick can't hit Negan.

Let me get this right TWD writers. Rick Grimes, Sheriff Rick Grimes, professionally trained Sheriff Rick Grimes, who for the last 7 years has had to go for head shots to kill zombies, can't hit Negan from 40 feet away with an automatic rifle? Not only can't he hit him outside, he can't hit him in a staircase as well? Sorry, not a lot of room to zig-zag your way out of getting shot on a stairwell, but somehow Negan does. And really Rick, you run out of bullets? You blast 450 rounds into the bottom of an overturned car and for the first time in 8 years you run out of amo. Seriously TWD writers, NEVER EVER use this again. If Rick has a shot at Negan again, he can't miss. Never place the characters in that situation again. It was farcical in the season premier and it is just lazy now. Heck Simon is lecturing the saviours on not killing the hilltop, just wound them. The Saviours can aim for limbs but Rick can't hit the chest or back of Negan? Horrible. Never let it happen again writers.

Good news ladies. In the post apocalyptic world, a pregnant woman doesn't have a baby belly. Something to look forward.

Rick spilling the beans on Simon was good. That was well done. Well written. Lots of action in the show. A little bit of conflict within the groups and finally what appears to be a wrap up of the series. Lots of talk on peaceful rebuilding of the world. Couple that with the helicopter from a few weeks ago and it appears that the rebirth of civilisation is close.

Some Blind Dumb Fan Is Giving Fake Reviews Of 9,10 Ratings With Multiple Accounts,But No Matter how hard they try they cant change the fact how bad this episode was,and yeah Negan Is Invincible,Pathetic Fight Scenes With Rick are now too much to handle when you already know that he won't die in this episode, rick will miss his aim, walkers will magically appear or something else idiotic will happen,My 10 year old son can write something better than this. I wish there was 0 Rating option avallible for this episode. When i started watching this show overall IMDB Rating Was 9.0 and now it's 8.4 And In future it will fall even more with this kind of content.

Amazing episode, edge of my seat and I've read the comics
Flashroxx20 March 2018
Was a brilliant episode, exciting and edge of seat stuff. Having read the comics the recent major character's death has really thrown things up in the air, you don't know who's going to die or who's going to switch sides or as we found out in this episode what new characters will show up.

Today was also fantastically refreshing as it wasn't in the woods for once, both the show and comics have grown stale with the current locations so it was nice to see some buildings again. I really hope both of them end up back in Atlanta city or a new city as those scenes in the first season were brilliant. Rick and Neegan's fight was awesome and I'm really enjoying the show, yes it dipped a bit here and there and I'm glad the writers have written out/changed the silly trash people. A lot of internet haters that love to pick on something massively popular and try to pull it down from its throne have set their sights on TWD but I think the fans outnumber them and I really hope it continues for a long time. Love it.

So What Did We Learn Tonight
sevenlilxenos19 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Finally got the Rick vs Negan, one on one, showdown. Started with a car chase that had the potential to rival The French Connection but it ended much too soon with Negan walking away from a roll over and entering a dark building followed by Rick. Then things just draaaaag out as Negan attempts to renegotiate his deal with Rick and Rick is stuck in kill mode especially once he finds Lucielle.

Walkers show up and its a boring draw. Not even a nude Walker could touch Rick or Negan. I hope when the saviours show up at Camp Maggie Rick proudly holds up Lucielle and shouts I'm Negan now b/tches.

Simon enlists Dwight in his coo to take out Negan from the inside while laying the ground work for his ascendancy to leadership with the rank and file. This should get real interesting now that Negan knows that Jada's junkies are all dead against his orders. Speaking of Jada somehow she has captured Negan. I doubt it will take Negan very long to turn the tables on her, Prolly feign working together and then kill her when she refuses to be a wife or lower rung Saviour.

Maggie and the gals meet up with some strange smiling woman Boy Georgie and her twin side kicks Hilda (she likes cheese) and Midge (she like pickles) representing a new group who is much too clean and wants to trade albums, yah old freakin records that play music for food and her doctorial thesis for life after a ZA or whatever. Some of TWD writers really need to look for other employment.

The Rick vs Negan showdown had the potential to be much better 7.5

Finally we get an episode that feels like the old TWD that we fell in love with. I rarely give a perfect 10 but this episode deserved it. Hopefully they can keep up the quality through the rest of the season.

And We're Off!
NandorTheRelentless19 March 2018
The pace was finally picked up this season with this episode. We finally saw some plot progression as well as some good action scenes. The only thing that could've made this episode better would've been the inclusion of More Carol and Daryl.

THE BEST EPISODE THIS SEASON AND BEST IN A LONG TIME!
conca-628-18337220 March 2018
This episode had everything. It was action-packed, dramatic and intense.

The only downside to this episode is the directors shots; the close ups. They are getting annoying and starting to irritate me but aside from that it wa a great episode.

The BEST in a long time, I like where the show is going at the moment and these last three episodes have been very good, hope they can continue to do so with last 3. I'm excited to see what happens next week, so make sure to watch.

Warning: Spoilers
After watching this episode, I believe the show is going in the right direction. The battle between Rick and Negan was great however, it does seem a little stupid how Rick can never seem to hit Negan, even though he was a sheriff. Other than that, it was very good.

Have a Future From Our Past
ThomasDrufke19 March 2018
Having everyone in one place is making this back half of the season work a lot smoother. Of course, there are still times when you wonder why certain characters don't make appearances, but I think we're done with the whole 3 episode arc without a big character appearing. Or at least that's the way it seems.

Tonight's episode dealt with Rick's growing unstableness and him being set on killing Negan. It's not unexpected considering where his mind has been the last few weeks, but doesn't it feel like this is yet another rehash of the growing list of people wanting to take on Negan on their own? Didn't Sasha, Rosita, Carl, and even Michonne all do the same thing? It played out in a fiery and Fast and Furious like fashion, but it's ultimately not all that different from those previous arcs.

On a different but somewhat similar note, Simon and Dwight sure seem like they are planning on taking on the new Negan role for The Sanctuary. It's an interesting dynamic to see play out, with both characters having different reasons to see the big guy go down, but yet not fully willing to admit their disapproval of his lead. If not both of them, it sure seems like one of them will bite the dust within the next few episodes.

It was a fascinating juxtaposition watching Rick try to tear Negan to pieces, along with Simon and Dwight plotting, while the Hilltop crew was busy building for the future with the new help from Georgie and two twins. Whether or not the introduction of Georgie is an indication of a bigger arc in years to come, or it's a one-off that is meant more to show our protagonists how they should live from now on, I certainly enjoyed that change of pace.

The Walking Soap Opera lumbers on. More contrivances. Where's the story? "Feelings, Nothing more than Feelings!"
Bababooe19 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, so Rick (Dick) is back in the fold, Hilltop. He screwed up Alexandria, now he's at another area to screw up. Darryl comes over like a kid who done wrong and apologizes to Dick for screwing things up with the assault on Saviorville. Yeah, great. Thanks for nothing.

Maggy gets a note to meet up with some New People. That's all we need. More freaks to think about. These people want records, no spoken word. Come on. More conflict with Michone and Enid. Enid wants to kill. Michone does not want to kill. These people are unreal!

Man, no laughs in this episode.

So, now we see Dick spying on the Savior convoy on a dirt road on their way to Hilltop. We see Dick contemplating honking his horn to notify Hilltop. What suspense. Should he or should he not honk his horn. Next we see the Savior Convoy in a city/town allyway. They went from dirt road to a freaking allyway. Then Dick crashes his car on Negan's car. Neeg pulls away, Dick follows. The rest of the Savys block the road. Simon and Dwayne after a conference follow. Oh the suspense.

So, we see Neeg has crashed his car, Dick starts shooting, misses, Neeg goes into a building, Dick shoots, still misses, and runs out of bullets. Anybody heard of reloading? What happened to Neeg's guns? Neeg's got his Lucile, Dick throws his hatchet and misses. Neeg falls down to the basement, Dick follows, and what follows is some serious negotiations. Neeg offers to forgive Dick if he works for him. Dick threatens to kill Neeg, AGAIN. How exciting. Then, Neeg goes out the window. Well, since Dick went out the window twice in Alexandria, Neeg can also do that. Dick follows.

Next we see Neeg in a car, and we all assume that Dick captured him. But no it's the Junk Queen. How the hell did Dick turn into the Junk Queen? That's a great trick.

I'm still waiting for Plan 10 From Outer Space. Maybe those aliens can come back and bring CORAL back to life, along with Bela Lugosi and Ed Wood. Coral can mediate a peace with Dick and Neeg. And maybe Coral can even mediate a peace for Lugosi and Wood, after Wood denigrated Lugosi's carrier with a pile of garbage.

From Vlad the Impaler, Vlad III Dracule, Prince of Walachia, the real bad dude, to Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, to Noseferatu 1922, to Dracula/Bela Lugosi 1931, to White Zombie/Bela Lugosi 1932, to Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend 1954, to Vincent Price is The Last Man on Earth 1964, to Romero's Night of the Living Dead, to Messiah of Evil 1972, we have degenerated into a morph of the zombie undead into the background of a human to human soap opera contrived battles of Rick the Dick (the supposed good guy, who can't shoot straight anymore) and Negan the laughing false prophet (The Savior).

We are in the land of Feelings. Feelings by Morris Albert "Feelings, Nothing more than feelings, Trying to forget my, Feelings of hate"

Please listen to the song for dramatic effect while watching: The Walking Soap Opera
