Land of Light was shot at the Turkish-Syrian border in the Hatay province of Turkey. All actors are non-professionals, themselves refugees in the border town of Reyhanli. The city is a hub of the FSA, the so-called Free Syrian Army, that from here directs their efforts inside Syria. To realize the project, theater workshops were organized in different makeshift schools and the Anatolia Cafe over the course of two months. From the so-called Speak Syria workshops, the story originated. The Syrian community in the town joined in the efforts of making the film.
The production was mainly funded through crowdfunding on the platform Startnext. During the crowdfunding, the exhibition "Playing with my Inside War", was shown in different cities in Germany. It shows children paintings from the Speak Syria workshops and the games the children played. Concerts were organized to raise attention and inform about the project. Eventually the film was co-funded by the German-French TV-stations SWR/Arte.
