Although not all Discord episodes are great (most fans, including myself, would rather forget that Season 5's "What About Discord" exists, apologies if that sounds mean), he has always been one of my favourite 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' recurring characters as well as one of the funniest. It has been great that Fluttershy later on came on a long way as a character, and it was interesting to see how she would interact with Discord and think of him.
There is not much at all discordant about "Discordant Harmony". To me, it was a great episode and one of the best of the first half of Season 7 (in the better half for the overall season, an inconsistent one though not as much as the previous one, too). It contains Discord's best, most interesting and funniest appearance in a long time. It also shows how far Fluttershy as a character has come on and the dynamic between her and Discord was refreshing. Can understand totally why it became popular with fans at the time.
One fellow fan of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' brought an inconsistency to my attention. Involving how much Fluttershy knew about Discord, like almost everything and practically exactly, things that had never been revealed before in the show or to any of the characters. Which did, like my fellow fan, leave me to question how she knew details as intimate as those.
However, everything else is so brilliantly done that it didn't bother me massively. The animation is colourful and meticulous as to be expected, absolutely loved the rich colour and the amount of detail that was paid to the backgrounds. It also really does show how more refined and polished overtime the animation style came. The music is dynamic and has character, atmosphere and groove.
Discord is a joy here. He is very funny and at his zaniest, even when he is "trolling" himself (but luckily not the over-mean character he was in "What ABout Discord"), and isn't mean-spirited like he was in "What About Discord". He also has a caring side that is very surprising and it was a different side to him done well, not out of character or being dumbed down. Fluttershy is also written beautifully, and while she was written well in "Fluttershy Leans In" earlier on in the season this is a much better episode for her. She is very likeable and her attempts in being chaotic are funny, it is great too to see moving away from the timid nature that was associated with her for a long time while acknowledging the differences between them.
Similarly dig the relationship between Discord and Fluttershy, which was a total surprise to me due to seeing a different side to Discord and finding out what Fluttershy really thinks about him, and it was both funny and charming. As well as refreshing, one of the show's best attempts at showing a different side to character relationships. The writing is both very funny and honest, with a well executed moral that was not confused this time. John De Lancie and Andrea Libman voice Discord and Fluttershy wonderfully.
Overall, excellent. 9/10.
