A surprising contestant
Watching this episode for the first time in 2024, it was rather shocking to see actress Kirstie Alley suddenly appear, not as a celebrity panelist, but rather as an unknown, civilian contestant.
She identified herself as an interior decorator from Wichita Kansas, with no mention of being a wannabe actress, but she seemed much too confident and professional on stage to be just a regular contestant, and she didn't seem to be taking it very seriously. My guess is that she already had acting aspirations, and was using the appearance on the game show as an audition for bigger things.
If so, it worked.
Checking her bio , I see this was a year before she was cast for her first significant role (as a Vulcan in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan") and two years before her big role in "Cheers".
According to her bio was apparently hooked on cocaine at the time (although I saw no indication of that in her appearance), and got involved with Scientology in order to kick the habit.
Her appearance on "The Match Game" actually spanned two episodes, since they hadn't finished playing her game by the time the first episode ended.
She actually seemed a little bored at times during the second game, but she was a good (and lucky) player, giving sharp answers, and winning $6,000 (the equivalent of about $25,000 in 2024).
