A slew of late-night hosts are finally turning the lights back on this week after some Pto. Meanwhile, three of the last shows standing last week are going dark.
Monday, April 29 will mark the return of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Fallon & Meyers have been on an extended two-week spring break, and Colbert joined them last week.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be back with new episodes as well. Kimmel has pumped out new episodes all April long, but was off Thursday night for the NFL draft.
Saturday Night Live is also back later this week with host and musical guest Dua Lipa, after taking two weeks off.
As each of these programs return, three of the shows that have been holding down the fort are going on break themselves.

"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise has been popular for well over four decades and continues to enjoy plenty of fanfare. After completing the original trilogy of films, Lucas returned to the franchise for the prequels, which explore Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the dark side and transformation into the nefarious Darth Vader.
Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
However, for Vader’s backstory to work, Lucas had to kill off a fan-favorite character in the final installment of the prequels. Nonetheless, Lucas’ original plans for the prequels did not involve the death of Vader’s love, Padmé. Here is everything you need to know about Lucas’ original plans for Padmé and her fate.
George Lucas’ Original Star Wars Prequels Plan Avoided Padmé’s Untimely Death
Natalie Portman‘s Padmé Amidala serves as the primary love interest for Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Two weeks after Conan O’Brien’s triumphant return to his former home at 30 Rock, another homecoming of sorts is set to take place on his old show.
Drummer Jay Weinberg, who currently serves as drummer for crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, will sit in with Late Night with Seth Meyers’ 8G Band next month.
Under the musical direction of Fred Armisen, The 8G Band frequently invites artists to sub in for Armisen on drums. Other recent guest drummers have included Fall Out Boy’s Andrew Hurley, No Doubt’s Adrian Young, and Mudhoney’s Dan Peters.
Weinberg’s presence on Late Night creates something of a full-circle moment for the franchise. His father, Max Weinberg, was the drummer and bandleader for O’Brien’s house band.

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption
The inspiring and heartwarming prison drama told the story of one man’s resilience and eventual freedom from being put into prison despite claims of innocence. The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

Few documentaries have been as genuinely shocking as director Andrew Jarecki’s 2015 true crime documentary series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” Using existing media, reenactments and exclusive interview footage of Durst, who had agreed to be interviewed by Jarecki, the six-episode series investigated three unsolved murders in which Durst had been a suspect. It was a captivating spectacle that became a game-changing piece of art when, the day before the series finale aired on HBO, Durst was arrested for first-degree murder after being caught on a recording stating, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
Nearly a decade after winning the Emmy for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Jarecki is back with “The Jinx — Part Two.” Premiering Sunday at 10/9c, the HBO series details the events of the next eight years, during which time Durst was tried and convicted of the murder...

David Dastmalchian was raised in a religious household where “everything was ‘the Devil’s work’” and he was constantly told not to open myself up to anything evil that could come in. “Fast-forward to me as a grown-up and I’m telling my wife not to order a cursed Ouija board off the Internet,” the actor notes. He’s also hosted seances, been published in “Fangoria,” penned the graphic novel series “Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter” for Dark Horse Comics and served as the brand ambassador for a line of caskets.
And, of course, starred in the hottest horror movie of the year as the lead in “Late Night With the Devil.” The indie feature from brothers Cameron and Colin Cairns was released by IFC in theaters, where it’s already made a robust $10 million. And as of today, it’s available to stream on the horror network Shudder.

The 1970s– an era of “unrest and mistrust, fear and violence,” says the opening minutes of Colin and Cameron Cairnes’ Late Night with the Devil, accurately reflecting the viewpoint of the burgeoning moral panic of the time. Fear mongering-ish as that sounds, after a decade of Christianity in crisis mode– including a 1966 Times cover asking, “Is God Dead?”– and the “Satanic” cult murders by the Manson Family in 1969, the ’70s were a time of peak (at least until then) obsession with all things occult, planting the seeds and ultimately leading to what would be known as the full-blown Satanic Panic in the decade to follow. The devil was believed to be real, and he was to be feared, expelled, and/or worshiped– in real life and reflected in dozens and dozens of horror films and countless categories of other media within that era.

Hitting 10 years as host of NBC’s Late Night, Seth Meyers has learned many lessons along the way. The biggest among them? The ability to be “as nimble as possible,” according to the late night host.
He has learned not to “marry yourself to an idea before the show actually tapes,” Meyers told The Hollywood Reporter during a special PaleyFest event Monday night. The host joined pal and the evening’s moderator Andy Samberg at the Dolby Theatre for a conversation looking back at the beginning of his Late Night journey and the highlights along the way.
After a video introduction of the popular Late Night segment “Day Drinking With Seth,” Meyers and Samberg took the stage, jumping right into conversation. Samberg asked Meyers to look back at the beginning of the show in 2014 and the process he went through to land the gig.

Way back in 2002, the excitement for Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones diminished somewhat. Late Night with Conan O’Brien sent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to mock the fans lined up for the premiere, resulting in a segment in which comedian/puppeteer Robert Smigel launched nerd jokes at the assembly.
Most of the jokes were pretty obvious, including the last bit, in which a man cosplaying as Mr. Spock gained the knack for cursing and walked up and down the line with his middle finger extended. But while the perceived Star Wars vs. Star Trek rivalry has become an old toxic cliché at this point, the fact is that the two franchises don’t actually overlap very much in terms of their core missions. Trek favors optimistic philosophical inquiry and Wars emphasizes fantasy and adventure.
In fact, in their decades-long history, Star Wars and Star Trek haven’t...

Late night’s current era of good feelings was on full display last night as Seth Meyers (taking advantage of a two-week break from his own show) sat down with Jimmy Kimmel for his first-ever appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Meyers—who Kimmel introduced as a “hardworking American treasure” whose own show “airs the minute ours ends over on NBC”—surprised the crowd as well as Kimmel by wearing a suit for the occasion, which is something you’d never see on Late Night.
“I feel like you’re at my funeral or something,” Kimmel joked of Meyers’ formalwear. “It’s very kind.”
In an attempt to clarify his decision to rock a more casual look on his own show, Meyers explained that “the reason I don’t dress up for my show is it is on later. It’s on at 12:30 at night and I realize no one...

(Updated with more details) The Vice President is no longer heading to late-night.
VP Kamala Harris was set to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! tomorrow night (Tuesday April 16).
However, her appearance has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. Though the VP did end up flying back into LA from her quick trip to Las Vegas today, and not going to DC, no reason for Harris’ absence from the ABC late nighter was given.
However, the White House has announced that the Vice President “will participate in a campaign event” later in the day on Tuesday. Kimmel usually films that night’s show in the late afternoon — which is around the same time the Veep’s campaign event appears to be occurring.

In case we needed yet one more reminder that the late-night wars of old have long since passed the Armistice stage, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel is set to welcome NBC’s Seth Meyers to his late-night program tonight.
While it’ll be Meyers’ first visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, by now the two late-night hosts are well-acquainted. Together they were two-fifths of last year’s Strike Force Five podcast, where they helped raise funds for their staff during the WGA strike.
Separately, the two hosts have also both released children’s books in recent years, memorably joining forces to help promote each others books.
Meyers, who’s on a two week break from Late Night, has plenty of projects to promote beyond his own show.
He recently produced the Peacock documentary Good One: A Show About Jokes, which follows follows comedian Mike Birbiglia on the road as he builds a new comedy set.

Hollywood star Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell starred in the Monsterverse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The father-son duo portrayed different phases of the character Lee Shaw, a former U.S. Army colonel entangled in monster investigations. While the 73-year-old actor portrayed the elder Lee Shaw, the Overlord actor embodied the character in his younger years.

As a one-time football great, O.J. Simpson’s initial forays in late-night TV were generally as a jovial guest, and even included a gig as host of Saturday Night Live on February 25, 1978 . But all of that changed in the summer of 1994, when Simpson became the prime suspect in the double-murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.
Over the next year and a half, late-night hosts made a meal out of Simpson’s subsequent arrest and what was dubbed the “Trial of the Century,” which ended with the fallen athlete’s acquittal—a decision that all the “Dancing Itos” Jay Leno could have assembled would likely never have predicted.
Despite his acquittal, and the public’s obsession with all things O.J., no self-respecting late-night host seemed very eager to have the Juice come on and share his part of the story.

O.J. Simpson was on everyone’s mind today after his death, and Conan O’Brien took the opportunity to salute his late friend, comic Norm Macdonald, who continued doing Simpson jokes on Saturday Night Live even after being warned by NBC higher-ups to knock it off.
Sitting Thursday with CNN’s Jake Tapper to promote his new show, Conan O’Brien Must Go, the former Late Night host remembered Macdonald for doing “some of the most brilliant comedy of anybody during that whole period.”
It eventually led to his firing by NBC head Don Ohlmeyer in 1998. O’Brien explained that “The head of the network at the time was tight with O.J.”
O’Brien praised Macdonald as “one of my best guests of all-time,” and “one of the great comedians of all-time.”
Macdonald anchored SNL‘s “Weekend Update” segment for the 20th season, which ran during the Simpson trial. He insisted Simpson was guilty,...

Exclusive: Vice President Kamala Harris is heading back to late-night.
Deadline understands that Harris will appear as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday April 16.
It is her latest appearance on the ABC show; Harris previously appeared on Kimmel’s show in March 2019, when she was running for top office.
During that appearance, she talked about the campaign trail, said “age is more than a chronological fact” when asked whether Biden or Senator Bernie Sanders were too old to run for President, and noted that she was “open to the discussion” of getting rid of the Electoral college.
Kimmel has previously defended Vice President Harris’ low approval ratings, blaming “sexism and racism”.

As Alex Horne tells it, Taskmaster was born out of professional jealousy. In 2009, he became a parent and so broke with almost a decade of tradition by not taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe. That same year, his friend and former flatmate Tim Key won the festival’s top comedy award, for which Horne had been nominated in 2003.
At home and envious, Horne sent out emails inviting 20 comedians – including Key – to take part in a new competition in which he would set them a different task each month for a year. The results would be shared in a live performance at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe called The Taskmaster.
The result was organised chaos. An overdraft of comedians (a Fringe-specific collective noun) plus a pianist joined Horne on stage to reveal the results, set tie-break tasks, and eventually crown a winner.

Tuesday night saw something that, fourteen years ago, might have seemed impossible: Conan O’Brien returned to “The Tonight Show.” And he was greeted with a standing ovation.
He was there, ostensibly, to promote a forthcoming Max series in which he travels the world meeting fans. But he’d come a long way just to get to 30 Rockefeller Center in 2024, and the interview with current “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon functioned as a peace offering, or a marker of how much time has passed.
O’Brien, after all, exited the program under a cloud in 2010, after a much-followed period of corporate intrigue. Inheriting the show from Jay Leno, O’Brien was set up to fail when NBC programmed a prime-time Leno series, which bombed, as his lead-in five nights a week; O’Brien departed the show after only seven months, at which point Leno replaced him. Conan O’Brien returned to The Tonight Show on Tuesday, April 9, for the first time since being fired as host back in 2010, and he couldn’t help but feel “weird” about it all. The legendary comedian joined Jimmy Fallon to promote his upcoming Max series, Conan O’Brien Must Go, and the pair reminisced about O’Brien’s late-night career. O’Brien hosted Late Night on NBC from 1993 to 2009 and two seasons of The Tonight Show between 2009 and 2010. “It’s weird to come back,” O’Brien said. “I haven’t been in this building for such a long time, and I haven’t been on this floor in forever. I was here for 16 years doing the Late Night show before we went out to L.A., and right across the hall… all these memories came flooding back to me.” “The first thing that will hit you — and it will hit you,...

“It’s weird to come back,” O’Brien said. “I haven’t been in this building for such a long time, and I haven’t been on this floor in forever. I was here for 16 years doing the Late Night show before we went out to LA.

Conan O’Brien made his Tonight Show return on Tuesday, and he and host Jimmy Fallon reminisced about O’Brien’s time with NBC’s late-night shows.
The comedian hosted Late Night for 16 seasons, from 1993 to 2009 before his short tenure with The Tonight Show from 2009 to 2010.
“It’s weird to come back,” O’Brien told Fallon during his latest appearance. “I haven’t been in this building for such a long time, and I haven’t been on this floor in forever.”
He added, “I was here for 16 years doing the Late Night show before we went out to L.A. and right across the hall — all these memories came flooding back to me.” O’Brien later joked that it was strange seeing other sets built in what used to be his show’s studio.
Earlier during their conversation, Fallon also noted that O’Brien was his first-ever talk show appearance.

As Conan O’Brien Returns To ‘The Tonight Show’, He Reminisces About ‘Late Night’ Rather Than 11:30pm
Conan O’Brien returned to The Tonight Show for the first time as a guest since he left the NBC show.
However, the comedian largely dodged talking about his stint on the 11:30pm show. O’Brien hosted the between June 2009 and January 2010 but was replaced by Jay Leno’s return to the show.
He briefly mentioned it at the top of his appearance following a standing ovation from the audience. “I know you meant well, but I had The Tonight Show for ten minutes and you ate into my time,” he joked.
O’Brien wasn’t pressed by host Jimmy Fallon about his time on The Tonight Show.
He did, however, reminisce about his time hosting at 12:30am. O’Brien hosted Late Night between 1993 and 2009.

Sitting down with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night in his first visit back to the Tonight Show since he stepped down as host in 2010, Conan O’Brien told a story about the time a fire at 30 Rock forced his show out of its studio on the sixth floor, so they taped show from the Rockefeller Center ice skating rink instead.
“The guest was Samuel L. Jackson,” O’Brien recalled to Fallon. “Andy Richter, my sidekick, and I ran into a Sharper Image and bought one of those massage chairs, and put it out next to the rink. And Samuel L. Jackson is like sitting there–the coolest guy in the world–but no one can make one of those chairs cool.”

The writers behind Late Night with Seth Meyers are taking their comedy to Washington D.C. this summer — Just don’t tell Seth.
“Don’t Tell Seth! An Evening with the Seth Meyers Writers” will come to the Kennedy Center on June 14-15, as part of its Comedy at the Kennedy Center programming.
Hosted by writers John Lutz and Peter Grosz, the variety show will feature standup comedy, sketches, audience interaction, and improv from Late Night scribes Matt Goldich, Jenny Hagel, Jeff Wright, Allison Hord, Ben Warheit, and Ian Morgan.
“Unshackled from the confines of network censors and what Seth thinks is ‘appropriate’ for his show,” the event description teases, “they are finally free to let loose!”
Seth’s writers are familiar faces on Late Night, often appearing on the program in sketches and desk segments like “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell.” But this isn’t the first time they...

Who is hosting The Daily Show this week?
If you said Jon Stewart you get 25 percent credit. For the other 75 you have to know the name Michael Kosta, because he’s following Stewart’s now-regular Monday night showcase with three nights behind the Tds desk this week, a role Kosta has been handling with some frequency in recent months.
Kosta is the self-described “big, straight, white male, standing there looking solid, doesn’t look too bad in a suit,” whose first piece on air for Tds was going around New York City encountering people who mistook him for Donald Trump Jr., as various shady guys with Russian accents handed him briefcases full of cash.
A joke, of course. Kosta doesn’t really look much like Junior. For one thing he’s in better shape. He used to be a professional tennis player.
Kosta could maybe be called a “host-in-waiting,” but...

Late-night hosts have largely steered clear of the war in Gaza, but Stephen Colbert took some time out on his show Wednesday night to address the Israeli airstrikes that killed seven humanitarian aid workers earlier this week.
On Monday, a strike by Israeli Defense Forces killed seven volunteers from World Central Kitchen, the organization founded by chef José Andrés that provides meals on the frontlines of humanitarian crises.
After his monologue last night, Colbert addressed the tragedy from his desk.
“Here at The Late Show, we talk about whatever we want…” he said. “But one of our self-imposed mandates is that, if we can, we talk about what everybody’s talking about. And today, what everybody’s talking about is something that’s pretty hard to talk about. And that’s Israel and Gaza.”
“There is passionate disagreement in this country about what is the best way for Israelis and...
