Ukulele Jazz
boblipton1 March 2019
If you asked me to describe the Croonader's act, I would say it was mostly sweet jazz with a couple of ballads, and a lot of ukulele playing.

That certainly doesn't sound like a recommendation. Sweet Jazz was the sort played by white musicians who were trying to appeal to people who didn't really like jazz -- back then, it was played by Black musicians in speakeasies and brothels. Nonetheless, these guys are good. The guys sing close harmony, they scat and one of them plays a high-speed, flashy version of "Twelfth Street Rag", that most mutable of rags, on a ukulele. They show a lot of talent and know how to sell a song. For an eight-minute short, it was a fine exhibition of a musical genre which didn't last more than a decade. I'm glad they caught it and put it on film, so we can see it now.

Fun Vitaphone Short

Melodious Moments (1928)

*** (out of 4)

Entertaining Vitaphone short featuring The Croonaders (Al Garry, Cy Kahn, Marcy Klauber) who sing four songs. Blue Grass, From Monday On, What Is It Like to Be Loved? and 12th Street Rag are the songs performed and if you're a fan of these old shorts then you'll find this one to be well worth watching as it's quite catchy and entertaining. I thought the three men performed quite well together and there's no question that they had a rather unique sound that drew you to the music. I personally thought all of them sounded well for this type of music and their performance was done quite well no matter what instrument was being used. I'm sure many people saw The Croonaders on the vaudeville stage but that's what makes these Vitaphone shorts so interesting. It's rare to get to see these type of performers so getting to see the acts in these shorts is a lot of fun.
