Absolutely impossible to be in love with this movie

"Verliebt in Amsterdam", which means "In love in Amsterdam", is a German television film from 2017, so still relatively new and I am a bit surprised this is not a Dutch co-production at least because, as you can see from the title, the film is set in Amsterdam and most of the actors in here are Dutch as a consequence. The director is Florian Froschmayer and well, looking at his pretty weak body of work, you can already see which cirection this film is heading quality-wise, namely deep down south. Still, his body of work is not as horrible as the one by writer Thomas Kirdorf. Really one trashy film after the next for a really long time, especially all those "Ein Sommer in" / "A Summer in" films that are known to suck. I think the "Verliebt in" films are a similar series taking place abroad with particular focus on the country where these films are set and what defines this country. Here it is the Netherlands of course. We have a young man from Germany falling in love with a Dutch local. I will get to all that later on. However, I must say the cast is really disappointing, even for such a low movie. Many equally bad films have better actors to them. Lead actor Burlakov you may have seen on a mildly famous German crime series that is very overrated in my opinion though. His co-lead Bracha van Doesburgh is not known at all in Germany, perhaps in the Netherlands. I cannot say anything about that. Rita Russek is also only familiar to me because of Wilsberg and she is definitely not a good actress. Heute Show Hassknecht is on board as well and he proves he can really only play one character as I expected. No range or versatility at all when it comes to this actor. Pretty telling nobody knows his real name (the one that is not Gernot) and rightfully so because he has no talent. I will not mention the real name either. He was all showy and over the top here, but definitely is not a good actor either. As for the rest of the cast, mostly people from the Netherlands like I said and I cannot say anything about them as a German citizen. Except the female protagonist's father, their parts are way too small anyway to make an impact.

The film has many many weak subplots and cringeworthy moments. It already starts with the female guide on the boat who keeps appearing constantly, also in the very first minute and in the final minute telling us how lovers who kiss on a particular bridge will always stay together. Oh how sweet. Well, they kiss under the bridge, so what does that mean? Also the big news that Amsterdam has more bridges than Venice and more nationalities than New York. Thanks for telling us. As for the key romance plot: The two meet at her shop for the first time and they do not seem to like each other. It is alright for a first meeting, but honestly this being the basis honestly for a real relationship is a joke and not a good one when they meet at the party again. Quite the coincidence by the way. Enough coincidence for the whole movie in fact, but hey they went all in with lack of realism. The idea how her daddy on the bike and his parents in the car have an accident is simply insulting to everybody in the audience. But hey, let's call it fate shall we? I prefer to call it fake. So many more embarrassing moments. Also all the pseudo drama with the two lovebirds about to break up (after that marriage proposal out of nowhere, haha what the heck?) or him being so mad at his dad that he does not want any contact with him anymore either. And it is all solved within under five minutes. The two daddies have a conversation about football and all id good with the German (totally did not fit the character) taking sides with the Dutch. And his mother helps out at the sandwich store (or whatever that was), but she is pretty cool, keeps her own clothes on under the apron. Or how the male protagonist and the girl's father hunt a bicycle thief before that. So ridiculous and cringeworthy, also the photos of the father becase of the speeding. Or how the male protagonist's parents talk to each other and do away with all the problems they had. Or I should say the man apologizes for everything. Yep, we have another very anti-male ARD degeto production here. The omen are in charge of everything, also the minor moments like not giving their husbands the phone to talk to their sons when the father ask them to do so. Russek's character is especially cringeworthy really on many occasions with how she treats her husband. Hassknecht's character that is, but yeah as wild and angry as he is about everything else, there he takes the humiliation constantly and still feels like his wife is his goddess. Ridiculous. Of course, there are also many playful comments on stereotypes when it comes to Germans and people from the Netherlands. All kept pretty harmless, so nobody won't be offended. Also all kept really unfunny, even if they did not realize that. What eslle sucked? Ah yes, Russek's character looking at the man with his wild haircut. Yeah, she is so busy and hurrying towards the female protagonist, but for that is still time staring at him. And of course, indirectly linked to that the female protagonist's friend who is a lesbian and eventually has the ultimate advice for the male main character how to win (back) his darling's heart. By doing stuff. I mean it was an okay message and at least partially true, but the "you heteros" part was pretty embarrassing. Apparently, they just wanted to include every single group here that is not hetero white males and depict them as superior. Sadly, they did not have the talent to do so in a convincing manner. The outcome is just embarrassing and it feels all fake and for the sake of it, which is why they were doing these "less privileged" also not exactly a favor this way. Okay, there is still a lot I can say about this movie and about cringeworthy scenes and moments because there are really many, but I will not and hope to forget this mess as soon as possible. I can only say that the rating here on imdb is also way too high. Considerably over six for this mess? Absolutely inaccurate. The script was really poor, the actors were not good and the characters were almost all really unlikable, which was not intended I'm sure and is at least partially subjective, but still. Also a consequence of the shoddy writing. The epitome of ARD Degeto failure. The sooner they stop showing this film on national television, the better for everybody, althoug I have a bad feeling that this will still be on ten years from now. And you have to sit through garbage like the underwear on the floor scene or the painted car or the generic money offer. God, there is so much wrong with this movie, it's not even funny anymore. Never was by the way, also not in a way where you could say this is a film that was so bad it was funny. Just plain bad. Highly not recommended and I give it a gigantic thumbs-down.
