Noted actor Pankaj Tripathi faced one of the toughest challenges of his career when he was asked to portray former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in biopic “Main Atal Hoon.”
Vajpayee (1924-2018) was a poet and a politician who served three terms as Prime Minister. He belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp), the party, which is currently in power in India. Vajpayee, who presided over India’s nuclear tests, was also known as a diplomat who improved relations with the country’s arch rival Pakistan and introduced multiple reforms. He was popular across party lines.
“I’m not good at mimicry,” Tripathi told Variety. The conflict that the actor was how much of Vajpayee to mimic and how much to internalize his performance. “How much of his mannerisms should I keep and how much not,” Tripathi said.
Tripathi read several books about Vajpayee and watched news clips and speeches.

L.A.-based Wild Sheep Content, headed by former Netflix international honcho Erik Barmack, is adapting German No.1 bestseller “When Butterflies Fly Loops” for Mexico, as it branches out into unscripted with Adal Ramones, Mexico’s No.1 standup, and boards Lucía Puenzo’s gangster epic, “The Gunwoman (Pepita’s Legend).”
Starring Luisana Lopilato, and just announced, “Gunwoman” reps a “giant story” account, said Puenzo, of real life mobster Margarita Di Tulio, which is backed by a far-ranging consortium of good and great players in and outside Argentina.
All three titles see Wild Sheep driving ever deeper into big IP in highly packaged and star-laden projects, while branching out in sectors and territorial reach – strategies which may well become text-book tactics as streamers and broadcasters pull back on commissions or buys over much of international.

Bambai Meri Jaan is creating waves by showcasing stories that may be familiar to many of us. What makes this ten-episode-long show different from the usual fare we have watched on this subject over the years is the treatment of the story and the screenplay. This story is extensively covered in pieces of media like books, case studies, and articles. There are plenty of Hindi films as well that were either successful in being accurate portrayals of that era or they were just over-the-top dramatization, which in most cases did not give the audience the right picture to understand the nexus and the leaders.
Bambai Meri Jaan is based on the bestselling book ‘Dongri to Dubai’ written by India’s top investigative journalist S. Hussain Zaidi. ‘Dongri to Dubai’ has been the source material for many movies made in the gangster drama genre. What makes them less engaging than Shujaat Saudagar...

An investigative thriller that happens to be a period drama may bring positive results if the narrative is written and executed well enough. Sacred Games, in the recent past, was the only web series that dealt with both genres effectively. Even though the first season lived up to expectations, the second season was kind of a letdown. Kaala, created and directed by Bejoy Nambiar and Shubhra Swarup, presents this crime investigative saga that spans over three decades. The show is a Disney+ Hotstar Special that was released on September 15, 2023. Kaala is the story of a massive money laundering ring and the cat and mouse chase between law enforcement agencies and the businessman running this racket. In that process an Ib officer comes across a cold secret that might change his perception of things around him.
Ritwik Mukherjee, an officer with Ib Kolkata plans to arrest Naman Arya, the waste recycling king of the city.

Haddi begins with a saree-clad Nawazuddin Siddique sharpening a blade and delivering dialogue in his unique ominous tone. Thus begins the journey of this film. Where else have we seen Nawazuddin being used to start a movie or a film with a voiceover? Yes, Sacred Games was that show, where Nawaz’s character, Ganesh Gaitonde, brought terror to our screens. Haddi is based in a similar universe, where gruesome violence is commonplace, and brutality is just a word. The only reality is power and money. Somewhere, Akshat Ajay Sharma, the director of the film, managed to introduce themes revolving around the lives of sexual minorities in the story. It’s great to see a film with great performances, that bring to the screen topics and characters, that have been seldom talked about. But is gangster-revenge-Drama the apt genre for these characters? Akshat seems to be so heavily inspired by Anurag Kashyap...

When Scam 1992 broke into the Indian Ott space three years ago, the web series scene in this country didn’t have much to offer other than Sacred Games or Made in Heaven. Upon its arrival, Hansal Mehta’s biographical epic on the convicted stockbroker Harshad Mehta not only became a rage among the audience, but it also made people take the Indian Ott space seriously. Three years later, its lead star, Pratik Gandhi, a relatively unknown face back then, is a household name who we regularly see in commercials where the now iconic Scam 1992 intro music plays in the background. Hansal Mehta, already a prolific director at the time of the show’s arrival, is on a career-high after delivering the Netflix thriller series Scoop only a few months ago. Considering all that, the second installment of the Scam franchise, titled Scam 2003: The Telgi Story, is possibly the most...

We have many films and television shows that have had male or female actors play the role of a trans man or a trans woman, and in most cases, they have aced it. The notable ones are Sadashiv Amrapurkar in Sadak, Vijay Sethupathi in Super Deluxe, Kalidas Jayaram in Paava Kadhaigal, and Kubra Sait in Sacred Games. We have never had anyone tell the story of a prominent transgender activist who has faced severe hardships and managed to help the downtrodden. We are talking about Shreegauri Sawant, a prominent figure who fought for the rights of transgender community in India. Keeping her story in mind, writer Kshitij Patwardhan, director Ravi Jadhav, and creators Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar give the audience Taali, a six-episode mini-series about her life. The question remains: Was Taali a good attempt to showcase her struggle?

This post contains slight spoilers for Netflix's "Kohrra."
Over the years, Indian crime thrillers or procedural-centered dramas on Netflix have performed really well, appealing to global audiences with their layered take on institutional efficiency and our understanding of how these systems work. Examples such as "Sacred Games" and "Pataal Lok" come to mind, and following this trend of complex, subversive entries in the genre is "Kohrra" (roughly translated to "fog"), which is currently topping Netflix India charts and is ranked pretty high in the Top 10 across South Asia and the Middle East (via Variety). Despite the crime procedural genre being oversaturated at this point, "Kohrra" manages to take specific tropes and subvert them thoroughly, especially when it comes to the portrayal of hegemonic politics of the "romance in the mustard field" trope.
"Kohrra" opens with a murder in a field, where a layer of dense fog hangs over the scene.

Ever since various Ott platforms waltzed into our lives, the Indian cinema space has been booming, for it has given viewers a plethora of options to choose from. With access to foreign content, the demand for gritty storytelling coupled with drama suddenly increased. This led to Indian makers jumping into this genre, which gave us shows like Sacred Games, Delhi Crime, Mirzapur, and Paatal Lok, to name a few. Just last week, Disney+ Hotstar forayed into the Telugu language web series with Shaitan, and Prime Video in 2022 gave us Suzhal: The Vortex, a Tamil language murder investigation story. With regional cinema, especially from the south, being the talk of the town, Disney+ Hotstar’s brand new Malayalam language police investigation thriller Kerala Crime Files is here for you to understand how a murder case turns into a chase to catch the culprit.

Ott platforms have not just changed the rules of the entertainment market, they have given, literally, a second life to Bollywood stars who had faded away from the public eye for quite some time. Of late, a number of senior actors, who had virtually retired from the industry or had limited theatrical releases, are now being reinvented and getting a hugely positive response to their work, courtesy of streaming platforms.
Here’s a list of nine actors who are back in the reckoning in their second innings because of Ott:
Harman Baweja
The actor made his debut with the 2008 release “Love Story 2050”, directed by his father Harry Baweja, and charmed the audience with his dancing skills (and little else!), but he was dismissed by all as the poor man’s Hrithik Roshan.

Exclusive: With the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike underway, and guilds around the world expressing solidarity, issues surrounding writers and the way they’re compensated have become front and center of a global conversation.
But Datta Dave, co-founder of Mumbai and Los Angeles-based agency Tulsea, whose clients include Sudip Sharma, Puneet Krishna and Shonali Bose, points out that while the WGA is dealing with important issues, they’re also “mature market issues” – or to be less polite, first world problems – as conditions for writers in developing markets are way behind even the basic rights that the WGA and other guilds have secured in the West.
“Over here we’re still at the stage where we’re asking for writers to get a credit on a billboard,” Dave says. “And while Hollywood might say writers don’t always get a credit on a billboard, the pendulum has swung so far...

Industry executives, producers and screenwriters got into the details of adapting literary material into film scripts at a Film Bazaar Knowledge Series discussion this week.
India has experienced growing use of books as source material in recent years, driven in part by streaming, which Sidharth Jain, founder of specialist adaptation company Story Ink. called “an inflection point.” But the Indian industry is still relatively new to the process and Jain said that development capital remains “a pain point.”
“As an industry, we are still learning to write a script and still learning to write in the correct format. But we will pick it up fast,” said producer Sunitha Tati. She cited the example of the recent Tamil-language hit “Ponniyin Selvan: I” (“The Son of Ponni”), based on a book. “Director Mani Ratnam knew how to take a most beloved novel to screen in probably the most appropriate way.”

Netflix is poised to unveil several of its series and two of its movies at the International Film Festival of India. The festival gets underway on Sunday and runs to Nov. 28.
Streaming platforms and film festivals can have uneasy relationships – due to its relationship with French cinemas, Cannes refuses to program Netflix films in premiere slots, and in India streamers were accused of taking advantage of pandemic conditions to license movies that could not access theaters – but increasingly they are finding common ground. Iffi will hold panel discussions after screening some of the Netflix content.
Monday will witness the global premiere of “Khakee: The Bihar Chapter,” a crime thriller series that Netflix describes as “pulpy.” Directed by Neeraj Pandey, it navigates the birth of a super cop and a super villain and their epic clash in Bihar. Panelists will include Shital Bhatia, Bhav Dhulia, Karan Tacker, Avinash Tiwary, Jatin Sarna,...

Erik Barmack, the former senior Netflix exec, and Mexico-based producer Jimena Rodríguez have added two new Spanish crime novels – “El Susurro del Angel” and “Pequeñas Infamias” – to their burgeoning line in star-studded, character-driven crime thrillers begun by Netflix Mexico original “Invitation to Murder.”
Shot this Summer in Mexico, “Invitation to Murder,” adapting a Carmen Posadas novel and the first title in the crime thriller movie series, starred Peru’s Stephanie Cayo (“Club of Crows”), Spain’s Maribel Verdú (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), Colombia’s Manolo Cardona (“Who Killed Sara?”), and Mexico’s Regina Blandón (“Yo No Creo en Los Hombres”) and Aaron Díaz (“Toda la Sangre”) in a murder mystery reminiscent of “Knives Out,” Barmack said.
Marking out the most original facet of these new movies, “Murder,” “Susurro” and “Pequeñas Indiscreciones” – as the movie makeover is known – will, like “Invitation,” be made for global audiences by adapting high-profile Spanish literary IPs to Mexican settings.

Cinematographer Pushan Kripalani returns to the director’s chair with “Goldfish,” seven years after his acclaimed directorial debut “The Threshold.”
In the film, Anamika, a half-Indian half-English woman, returns home to the U.K. to deal with her mother’s dementia and the scars of her childhood. The cast includes Kalki Koechlin (“Sacred Games”), veteran Deepti Naval (“The Good Karma Hospital”), Gordon Warnecke (“Venus”), Rajit Kapur (“Rocket Boys”) and Bharti Patel (“The Undeclared War”).
“It’s very difficult to make independent cinema, as it does not get funded easily and so it’s taken me this long to get to make this film. I feel that dealing with larger questions is only possible by examining the smaller parts of human relationships. I feel that my job is to further the human conversation and this was a wonderful way to attempt to do that,” Kripalani told Variety.
