- (Flashback) Quick flashes of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) confronting the Demogorgon at the end of last season. Eleven pinning the Demogorgon to the wall with her psychic abilities and then the Demogorgon disintegrating into millions of pieces. Eleven wakes up on the floor of the middle school classroom still in the upside down. Her nose bleeding from using her powers, she turns around to survey the room. She begins to walk around the school, clearly worn out from her encounter. She begins to call out for Mike (Finn Wolfhard), but there is no response. She become more and more distraught, still walking through the upside down version of the school. She is now screaming for Mike, suddenly she stops as she hears voices. She turns to look and at the end of a hallway there is a small glowing red opening in the wall. She walks toward it and peers through a thin membrane and sees the flashlights from a couple soldiers on the other side, and they move towards the gap. She quickly moves out of the way, so as not to be spotted, and waits for the men to move on. She then tries to put her hand through the membrane and is able to break through to the normal world, she realizes that this is her way out. Using her powers once again she forces the opening to become large enough for her to pass through. She breaks through the membrane and is once again back in the normal world. There are still blood stains on the floor from soldiers that had unlucky encounters with the Demogorgon when it attacked. She slowly walks towards the exit.
Still that same night, Eleven walks along a path near some power lines and comes to Mike's house, but it is surrounded by police cars with their lights flashing. Inside the police and other government agents are talking with Mike's parents explaining that everything must be kept quiet and that if Eleven tries to make contact, they will know about it. There are a couple of agents interviewing Mike and he emphatically tells them that he doesn't know where Eleven is, and if he did he would never tell them. Eleven sees all of this through one of the windows. Mike glances toward the window and sees Eleven, they share a quiet look. The agents notice that Mike is looking at something and a few of them quickly head outside but Eleven has already left. A manhunt has begun for Eleven and men are combing the woods looking for her, but she is able to hide under a large overturned tree and evade detection.

(Present Day) Police Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) is cooking some breakfast at the old cabin that he and Eleven are hiding out at. He turns and is startled by Eleven hiding under a bed-sheet dressed as a ghost. She reminds Hopper that it is Halloween, Hopper agrees but tells her that right now it is breakfast and she needs to eat. Eleven continues to try to persuade Hopper to let her go out, saying that the bad men (government agents) wouldn't know it is her. Hopper reminds her that they have rules and so the answer is no, she can't risk it. There is tension between the both of them as Eleven wants to see her friends again but Hopper doesn't want her to be in danger, very much a father-daughter type relationship. Eleven begrudgingly removes the costume and sits down to eat her french toast. Hopper senses her disappointment and promises to come home early that night and get a bunch of candy and they can watch a scary movie together. He tells her that it is a compromise, Eleven doesn't understand the word and so Hopper tells her that it is her word of the day and explains the meaning. There are still quite of lot of things that Eleven doesn't understand. She agrees to Hopper's compromise and makes him promise that it will happen, Hopper accepts. While they don't seem to always get along, Hopper feels fondly for Eleven and even tussles her hair at the end of the conversation. They both smile at each other and continue to eat breakfast.
At the Byers home Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) is getting ready to head to work and goes to wake her son Will (Noah Schnapp) up. When he is not in his room, Joyce rushes to the kitchen to ask her oldest son Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) where Will is, he hasn't seem him. Joyce is now starting to get a bit freaked out and continues to yell for Will, she rushes into the bathroom and sees Will about to use the toilet. Joyce laughs sheepishly and closes the door. Joyce then helps to zip up Will's (Ghostbusters (1984)) costume. To make it complete she needs some tape and so she goes over to Will's desk and notices one of his drawings. It is a picture of the giant shadow monster that Will saw in the upside down within the red lightning storm. Joyce turns around and asks Will about it and he lies and says it is nothing, just a sketch of a character for a story he is working on.
Downstairs Jonathan takes some pictures of Will in his costume and the theme song for Ghostbusters starts to play in the background. Cut to Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) also getting his picture taken in his Ghostbusters outfit, taking various action shots. This then cuts to Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) getting pictures in his Ghostbusters outfit as well, with his younger sister standing by telling him how much of a nerd he is and being generally snarky. Finally cut to Mike also getting his picture taken by his mom, and he is not as excited or into it as much as his friends were. Mike, Lucas, and Dustin all arrive at school together on their bikes, singing the tune to Ghostbusters. Will then meets them there and they all greet each other by their characters names. Spengler! Egon! Venkman! Mike then realizes that both he and Lucas are both pretending to be Venkman, and he is mad and annoyed. He thought Lucas was going to be Winston, which Lucas denies ever explicitly agreeing to. While they are arguing Dustin turns around and a look of horror grows on his face. He yells to his friends to get there attention and notices that none of their classmates are wearing costumes! The bell rings and they realize they've made a mistake.
Laughter and snickers greet the boys as they walk down the hall at school, they are the only students that dressed up for Halloween. Max (Sadie Sink) rides by while they are at their lockers and Lucas and Dustin both stare at her. They want to talk to her about something, but are embarrassed that they are dressed up and she isn't. They psych themselves up and decide that they will just go talk to her, but she walks away before they have a chance and they decide to try later.
Hopper is at the Byers home talking to Joyce. He holds up Will's picture that Joyce found earlier and she is trying to convince him that scene depicted in it is the space right in front of the home. Now sitting inside, Joyce and Hopper continue to talk. She is concerned that Will didn't tell her the truth about it. Hopper believes that Will is just having flashbacks, not new occurrences of seeing the upside down. Joyce still doesn't buy it and asks Hopper if they should take Will to more doctors. Hopper is not sure that would be that helpful and reminds Joyce that it is coming up on the year anniversary of the Demogorgon attacks, and that it is probably just lingering trauma from that. Hopper assures Joyce that they just need to get through the next few weeks and everything will end up fine. He offers his cigarette to Joyce which she accepts and they reminisce about their time in high school together. For a moment, Joyce seems completely relaxed, but then the moment passes and Joyce remarks that she just wants this all to be over.
At the lab, another man gets suited up in a protective suit. This time he is armed with a camera instead of a flamethrower. He again goes through the sliding, glass double doors, gets sprayed off in the in-between section and another pair of sliding, glass double doors opens and he is in the room with the glowing pulsing mass of vines surrounding a hole to the upside down. It looks very similar to the hole that Eleven found at the beginning of the episode, only much larger. The man steps up to it and pushes through the membrane and enters the upside down. Back in the control room a monitor pulls up a video feed from the camera that the man took into the upside down. Dr. Sam Owens Paul Reiser and another technician stand by watching the feed. Dr. Owens reaches out to the man through the radio and asks about how things are going. The man replies that things are going fine and on the feed it's shown that he is approaching some sort of grouping of different radio antennae. The man discovers that the battery for the antennae is burned out. He replaces it with a new one, and the control room responds with cheers and applause. They are now back online and can continue to monitor the upside down from the real world.
Later on Dr. Owens is watching video clips from Will's past session, his hand squeezing a stress ball. He looks concerned as he hears Will recount his last experience with the upside down. He looks concerned and shuts off the recording.
Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) are in the school library working quietly on schoolwork. Nancy's pencil breaks and she gets up to go sharpen it. As she does so she looks across the library and sees a girl that looks just like her deceased friend Barb Holland Shannon Purser. In her mind, Nancy relives one of the last conversations she ever had with Barb. She continues sharpening her pencil, completely lost in thought. Steve grabs her shoulder and breaks her concentration, asking if she is alright. Nancy and Steve are then in a secluded room and Nancy confesses that she can't keep pretending that everything is okay and not acknowledging the terrible events that happened a year ago. She feels that everyone has already forgotten about her friend Barb and feels guilty that Barb's parents are selling there house and still have no closure about what really happened. Steve reminds her that they cannot say a word and that if they did there would be serious consequences. Steve consoles Nancy and tells her that they should just forget about it and go to Tina's Halloween party that night and pretend to be "stupid teenagers". Nancy agrees and they share a hug, Nancy is still depressed though.
At Hawkins Middle School, the bell rings and Max heads to her locker. Lucas and Dustin approach her and they nervously introduce themselves. Max recognizes them as her stalkers. They both quickly try to correct her, saying that they were just concerned for her well-being and safety. She comments on their costumes and Dustin is quick to show off the ghost trap replica he built, but Max doesn't seem too impressed. Dustin then invites Max to come trick-or-treating with their group, telling her that a majority of the group agreed to let her join. Max seems put off by this and tells the boys that it was presumptuous of them to think that she would just want to go with them. Dustin and Lucas don't seem to fully understand what the word means and after a beat Dustin agrees and then assumes that she'll be coming. Max just rolls her eyes and walks away. Dustin calls after her with the address and time where they will be meeting later that evening. Dustin then asks Lucas if presumptuous is a good think, Lucas looks uncomfortable and just walks away without answering.
Eleven is at the old cabin flipping through TV stations with her psychic powers, she is continuing to learn more and more about the world. She hears something outside and gets up to go check. She opens a window shade and sees a squirrel sitting on a large bird feeder chittering away. As she stares at the squirrel there is another flashback to her time alone a year ago... In the snow covered woods a squirrel runs up onto a fallen log. Suddenly the squirrel flies through the air and smacks into a tree and falls to the floor dead. Eleven walks up to the dead squirrel and picks it up. Later, Eleven is roasting the carcass over a fire when she hears a twig snap behind her. Turning around she sees a male hunter out in the woods. He asks her for her name and why she is out in the woods alone. Without warning Eleven causes a small log to fly up and knock the man out. She quickly takes his jacket and hat and runs off... Back to the present day, Eleven quickly shuts the window shade.
Hopper peels into the police station parking lot and as he gets out of his car he notices a truck next to him covered with a tarp, flies buzzing everywhere. He lifts up the tarp and the truck bed is full of blackened and rotting pumpkins. Inside the station Hopper chats with Eugene , who is accusing Merrill of poisoning his pumpkins because Merrill believed that Eugene had already poisoned his pumpkins. Eugene denies any wrong doing, Hopper believes him and thinks that maybe the cold weather is the cause of the pumpkins rotting. Eugene disagrees, saying that in all his years of farming he has never seen anything like this. Eugene also mentions that all the other farmers agree, explaining that all of their crops are dying as well. Hopper perks up at this news and asks Eugene for all of their names as well.
Max is skateboarding across the middle school parking lot after school is out and stops at her step-brother Billy's (Dacre Montgomery) car. He tells her that she is late again and that if it happens again she will be skating home. Billy tears down the road, and remarks to Max that he hates the town, Max doesn't think it's too bad of a place. Billy questions why Max would defend the town and Max claims that since they are stuck there she just wants to make the best of it. Billy asks her who's fault it is that they are stuck there and she quietly says "yours". Billy gets angry with her telling her that she knows whose fault it really is. He then slams and gas and the car starts going even faster. Further up the road Max sees Mike, Dustin and Lucas riding their bikes, slowly pedaling along. Max tells Billy to slow down and Billy questions if they are her friends. She denies knowing them and Billy remarks that she won't car if he hits them then. Max yells at Billy to knock it off, but Billy keeps speeding along. Dustin turns back and notices the car and alerts Mike and Lucas. The boys start pedaling as fast as they can and Max yanks the wheel of the car, sending it into the other lane. The boys also turn off the road as fast as they can and they car goes speeding by. Billy just laughs and Max looks horrified. Dustin and Lucas both recognize Max in the car and look shocked.
Hopper arrives at Eugene's farm and the two of them walk through his field as Eugene's family looks on. Every pumpkin is completely rotted, black and green slime covering them and flies buzzing all over the place. Eugene then again questions Hoppers feeble explanation that the cold weather is responsible for this. Hopper wants to know how far the rotting goes. As they walk further Hopper know sees that there are many trees that are rotting as well, covered in thick slime. Hopper then hears from both of his deputies on the radio, they are at another farm and there are similar results there. Hopper instructs his men to track the rot and see how far it goes. Hopper begins to use marking flags to track the extent of the rotting.
At the Byers home Jonathan is playing around with Bob's (Sean Astin) video camera, trying to figure out how it works. It is Halloween night and Bob is dressed up like Count Dracula and he instructs Jonathan on how everything works. Joyce is helping Will get ready to go trick-or-treating and reminds him to stay close to his brother and to come home right away if he starts feeling bad at all. Will agrees and it is clear that he just wants to get out trick-or-treating with his friends. Jonathan and Will head out, while Bob and Joyce stay home.
As Jonathan and Will are driving down the road, Jonathan remarks that he doesn't get what their mother sees in Bob. Will comments that he appreciates that Bob treats him normally, and that he thinks it's lame that his older brother has to come trick-or-treating with him. Jonathan and Will pull up to Mike's house and see Mike, Lucas, and Dustin out on the front lawn. Before getting out of the car, Jonathon makes Will promise that if Will stays in the neighborhood he can go on his own. Will enthusiastically agrees and goes to meet up with his friends, taking Bob's video camera with him. Jonathan pulls out the invitation to Tina's party and starts the car again.
Outside of Tina's house teenagers in costume roam about. Billy is doing a keg stand in the back, and is crowned the new keg king. Observers start chanting Billy's name, as he heads back into the house. Inside everyone is dancing and having a good time. As Billy works his way through the crowd he notices Steve standing with Nancy on the other side of the room and approaches him. Another teenager at the party lets Steve know that Billy is the new keg king. Nancy walks away, wanting nothing to do with the conversation. She heads into the kitchen looking for something to drink. Steve follows her over and Nancy starts downing the first drink she sees, she is still conflicted about their earlier conversation in the school library and she walks away from Steve again.
At home, Bob puts on some music and invites Joyce to dance with him. He tells her that she just needs to relax and while she agrees she also acknowledges that when Will is not around she just can't function as she is just so worried about him. Bob then asks Joyce if she would move away with him to Maine and leave Hawkins. Joyce doesn't give a straight answer and Bob, feeling a bit foolish, let's it go. The doorbell rings and Bob puts in his fake Dracula teeth and goes to greet the trick-or-treaters.
Cut to Mike, Lucas, Will and Dustin trick-or-treating and Will is using Bob's video camera to record everything. The lady at the door comments that they look like lovely little exterminators, to which they just groan and grab handfuls of candy. As they leave the boys start to argue about the best candy, out of nowhere pops Max in a Micheal Myers Halloween mask, brandishing a fake kitchen knife. All of the boys scream and Max just laughs and pulls of the mask mocking them. She turns to walk away leaving the boys standing there, still a bit shaken. Max turns back and asks them if they are coming or not. Dustin and Lucas are excited and quickly follow her, accompanied by Will. Mike still stands there and sighs, finally following after them as well.
Hopper continues to plant flags tracking down any rotted trees or plants, it's dark now. As he is walking back to Eugene's property he starts hearing strange sounds out in the field. Peering into the darkness with his flashlight, he slowly unclips his holster and starts to reach for his gun. Suddenly he hears a bang and whips around, but it is just Eugene's grandson dressed as a cowboy, firing off a cap gun. Hopper sighs, and the suddenly checks his watch realizing that he didn't keep his promise to Eleven. He rushes to his car and starts to speed away. He then slams on the breaks and backs up back to the grandson and offers him five bucks for some of his candy.
At the cabin, Eleven is still watching TV waiting for Hopper to come home. She hears some morse code come through a radio in the cabin and jumps up to go see what it is. Reading a chart on the wall, she deciphers the morse code as L-A-T-E, late, as in Hopper is running late. Eleven is disappointed and there is another flashback... Eleven, still with the hunter's hat and coat, is walking around the snow covered woods at night. While walking she notices a wooden box, and as she opens it she finds a couple of eggo waffles along with some other food. Seeing no one around she takes the food and runs off... back to the present day and Eleven shuts off the radio and looks upset.
Dustin, Lucas and Max are getting along as the trick-or-treat, while Mike and Will stick together. Will continues to use Bob's video camera. Mike is upset that Max is tagging along and asks Will if he agreed to it. Will didn't think Mike would be mad about, and he had sided with Dustin and Lucas. Mike storms ahead to a new house, leaving Will behind. As Will follows behind a few older kids jump out at Will, causing him to fall over and drop the video camera. When he hits the ground he is once again in the upside down. The red lightning storm is no longer raging, all is quiet. Will calls out for Mike, but he gets no response. He hears strange noises and starts looking around. Suddenly past the trees at the end of the street an ominous shape rises and the giant smoke monster appears. It spots Will and starts moving towards him. Will runs in terror toward the nearest house, hiding under some stairs and behind a wall. The smoke monster gets closer and closer, but before it can get to Will, Mike grabs his arm and he is back in the real world. Dustin, Lucas and Max come running up as well to see if Will is okay. Mike tells the rest of them that he will take Will home. Will, visibly shaken, doesn't say a word.
Back at Tina's party Jonathan has just arrived. He heads inside the house and meets a fellow classmate named Samantha. He makes a bit of small talk with her and then notices Steve and Nancy dancing across the room. It looks like they are having a good time now. Nancy heads back towards the kitchen, obviously drunk, as Steve follows behind her to cut her off. She ignores him and tries to get another drink, Steve fights her for the cup and in the process spill red punch all over her white sweater. Nancy then goes off to the bathroom with Steve following her again. She gets a hand towel wet and tries in vain to wipe the stain off. Steve offers to take Nancy home, but she accuses him of being 'bullshit', and that it's not okay that he is pretending that everything is alright. She blames the two of them for killing Barb and goes onto say that they are just pretending to be together. Steve, hurt by this drunken slip of the tongue, starts questioning Nancy further about their relationship. Nancy admits that she doesn't love him. Steve leaves and Nancy continues to try to rub off the stain on her sweater. As Steve heads out, he passes by Jonathan who realizes that Nancy isn't with him.
Mike and Will are back at Mike's house and Will is telling Mike more about his recent experiences with the upside down. He tells Mike about the strange noises he heard and the giant shadow monster he saw. Mike questions Will about if these experiences are real or if they are just in Will's head. Will says he's not sure and he asks Mike not to tell the rest of their friends. Mike sadly remarks that Eleven would probably understand what Will is going through, if only she were around. Jonathan has driven Nancy back to her house and helps her inside. He gets her into her bed, takes her shoes off and pulls the covers over her. While doing so she finally recognizes that it is Jonathan and then passes out. Jonathan leaves, turning off her bedroom lights as he goes.
Hopper rushes up the steps to the old cabin and does the secret knock once, twice, no answer from Eleven. He sighs and holds his head and then calls out to Eleven asking her to open the door. Still no answer, he tries again, exclaiming that he is going to freeze to death. Finally the door lock clicks and the door opens. He sees that Eleven has moved the TV into her room and has the door shut. Hopper tries to apologize and asks her to open the door, but she doesn't answer. He then plops down on the couch and and starts to eat the candy he brought by himself, trying to guilt trip her to come out. In her room Eleven continues to watch TV, flipping through the channels. She comes to a channel that is just static and stops flipping. She puts on a blindfold and starts concentrating. She is now in a dark space where to floor appears to be water and she hears Mike on his walkie-talkie trying to reach out to her again. This is a place she can go to reach out to anyone she wants to. As she turn to look she actually sees Mike in his makeshift tent, but that is all she sees. She starts to move toward him as Mike talks about his day. Eleven gets right up next to Mike and softly says his name, Mike can sense her now, but can't see her. She begins to reach out to touch Mike's face, but before she can Mike puts down the walkie-talkie and gets up and walks off. Eleven is then left alone, tears welling up in her eyes as she watches Mike leave. Eleven is back in the cabin and she takes off the blindfold, a line of blood trickling out of her nose. She sits and sobs quietly.
Dustin returns home from trick-or-treating and he again hears something coming from his trash can. This time he sees the shaking and hears a loud noise come from it, knowing that it can't be his mom's pet cat. He cautiously approaches the trash can and while screaming quickly rips of the lid and peers inside. He stops and looks astounded, something strange is in his trash can.
