- As Mary's upcoming wedding looms, a terrible tragedy pushes Mary and Darnley apart, forcing Mary to enlist in Catherine's help. Elizabeth encounters a traitor to Spain, who petitions her to support an expedition to the New World.
- Preparations continue for Mary and Darnley's wedding, but Darnley's accidentally overheard disdain nearly estranges diplomatically crucial Florentine duchess Lucrezia de Medici, who demands a peerage as compensation. Lord Bothwell promises Mary to help acquire it, an opportunity to take her apart on an eventful boat trip, reveal being the "Loyal Watchman" who promised the late Marie de Guise to protect Mary and implore her not to wed unreliable Darnley. They meet seer David Rizzio, who relays Bash's 'posthumous prophecy': Mary must choose for either love, or an heir to a united Scotland and England. James follows Mary's orders to have Keira thrown out, but she is fatally injured in an accident, so Darnley blames Mary. Elizabeth meets John Hawkins, whom Spain wants executed for piracy, has him arrested but gets convinced to commission him to explore the New World for England as privateer, braving the greatest European power. Luc gains Charles's ear and manages to convince him to re-embrace Catholicism, but the king's behavior remains erratic.
