The Conjuring 4 – which, last we heard, was going by the title The Conjuring: Last Rites – is expected to be the final installment of the series at the heart of the Conjuring Universe… but it’s only the ending when it comes to big screen feature films. Fourteen months ago, it was announced that a The Conjuring TV series is in the works at the Max streaming service, and now Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, has confirmed that the show is still in development.
When asked what’s in the HBO and Max pipeline, Bloys told Variety, “One of the advantages that I think we have as a company, putting aside HBO for a second, is all the Warner Bros. IP. So after House of the Dragon, the next big tentpole series that we have coming up will be The Penguin with Colin Farrell. That...

Hellboy is one of the most successful superhero comic characters outside of the Marvel/DC duopoly; his adventures bridge the gaps between fantasy, horror, and good old-fashioned pulp.
In 1944, Nazis led by Grigori Rasputin opened a portal to Hell to summon the harbinger of the apocalypse. They succeeded — the being in question was a demon child named Anung Un Rama ( "And upon his brow is set a crown of flame"). The Nazis were defeated by Allied soldiers and the child was adopted by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and named Hellboy. Professor "Broom" raised his son into the top agent for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (The Bprd); Hellboy approaches his job with the attitude of a working stiff and is really unenthusiastic about his destiny to destroy the world.
Unlike his contemporaries superheroes, Hellboy hasn't had the most successful time on film. "Hellboy" has been adapted as an unfinished...

A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon, a franchise reboot called Hellboy: The Crooked Man that has been directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola. The film is a Millennium Media production, and since Millennium was also behind the newly released The Expendables 4 (or Expend4bles), our own Chris Bumbray was able to talk to the company’s Les Weldon, who is a producer on both Expend4bles and Hellboy: The Crooked Man. During their conversation, Weldon revealed that we should expect this new film to be the darkest, creepiest Hellboy movie yet.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster is not the first version of Frankenstein set in the Black community. There was Black Frankenstein, better known as Blackenstein, back in 1973 and more recently FrankenThug. The difference is while the previous two versions were exploitation films, writer/director Bomani J. Story set out to make a more serious film, one that like Mary Shelly’s novel, is out to do more than just deliver scares.
Vicaria has not had an easy life. At eight she saw her mother shot and killed. In the wake of that, Chris started working for local gang boss Kango and ended up dead. Now she watches her father Donald struggle to support her despite the growing drug habit he’s developed trying to cope with their deaths.

Veteran media executive Yoko Higuchi-Zitzmann took over as CEO of Telepool in January, barely a year after Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook took full control, in December 2021, of the German rights giant.
The appointment was a bit of a coup. The Japan-born, Germany-educated Higuchi-Zitzmann has more than a quarter century of experience in some of Europe’s biggest media companies. She was an acquisitions exec for Constantin Film — scoring Olivier Dahan’s Oscar winner La Vie En Rose for the German market among other deals — and producer at renowned German groups Ziegler Cinema — where she delivered sleeper hit My Blind Date With Life, a romantic comedy that earned more than $5 million at the German box office for distributor StudioCanal — and Studio Hamburg, where her hits included Herzogpark, a Desperate Housewives-style series for leading German network Rtl. Millennium Media is developing a new live-action Hellboy film, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, with Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Mom and Dad) directing the movie. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola took to social media to reveal that principal photography has wrapped.
Mignola said via Instagram, “I wasn’t on set for this one but they have been nice enough to send me dailies and I have to say I have loved what I’ve been seeing. German film and TV distribution and licensing company Telepool, which is owned by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook, is moving into lead producing movies and series, its CEO Yoko Higuchi-Zitzmann tells Variety exclusively in her first interview since joining the company in January.
Munich-based Telepool is celebrating its 60th anniversary on Wednesday, and although it has a barrel-load of experience in selling, distributing, licensing, financing and co-producing movies and series, this shift into initiating and lead producing represents a significant step for the company. It also forms part of Westbrook’s broader strategy for international expansion, which – in part – lay behind its acquisition of Telepool in December 2021.
Higuchi-Zitzmann seems ideally suited to the task as she has worked for several leading German film and TV companies, giving her experience in both distribution and production. The HBO Max streaming service is being rebranded as simply Max, and now that they have a newly shortened name they’re making a lot of news announcement to let us know what the future holds for Max. Among today’s revelations is that Max is developing a series that would be set in the Conjuring Universe!
The Hollywood Reporter has been able to confirm that Conjuring Universe franchise producer Peter Safran, who also now (with James Gunn) heads up DC Studios for Max owner Warner Bros. Discovery, will executive produce the series. A deal hasn’t been locked in with fellow Conjuring Universe producer James Wan just yet, but talks are underway to get him on board as an executive producer.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. All Max was willing to say is that the series will “continue the story established in the feature films.” And there...

According Hellboy.Fandom, Tom Ferrell is a character from the comic books who “was born around 1923 in the Appalachian mountains near the Hurricane (an area locals try to avoid) to a mother we know little of and his father, Charles E. Ferrel, who had a habit of drinking in the back woods. His early misadventures with witchcraft led to a self-imposed exodus.

It doesn't feel like all that long ago we were getting ready for a "Hellboy" reboot from director Neil Marshall ("The Descent") with David Harbour, of "Stranger Things" fame, in the title role. Harbour looked great, the cast had a lot of promise, and yet, the film flopped spectacularly when it debuted in 2019 both critically and commercially. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is going to give it another try with an R-rated, horror-skewing take on the Dark Horse Comics character in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." And, for better or worse, it seems very much like it's going to be a lower budget affair, particularly as comic-book movies go.
Even 2019's "Hellboy" only carried a reported $50 million budget, which is modest compared to say a Marvel movie, which can easily cost close to $200 million these days. But we have some evidence that suggests Millennium is going...

Life's been hard on Big Red, so far as his live-action outings are concerned. Both "Hellboy" (2004) and its sequel, 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," are evidence that auteur-driven superhero movies are the best kind there is. Sadly, however, neither of Guillermo del Toro's playfully grotesque supernatural action adventures was a runaway box office hit. On top of that, "The Golden Army" had the misfortune of opening in theaters two months after "Iron Man" and a mere week before "The Dark Knight." Sandwiched between those two game-changing comic book films, it's no wonder del Toro's off-beat creature feature got left in the dust, killing his plans for an apocalyptic finale to the trilogy in the process.
After the Neil Marshall-helmed "Hellboy" reboot fell flat on its face in 2019, it was only natural to assume Hellboy would be spending the foreseeable future in franchise prison. Surprisingly, though, that's not the case.

Given that the most recent attempt to bring Mike Mignola's Hellboy to the screen — with David Harbour as the title character — earned a poor 55 million worldwide (against a 50 million budget), it's perhaps surprising to learn that Mignola and others are looking to try again. But it's true!
Originally reported by Discussing Film and since confirmed by Deadline, the latest film will adapt comics tale The Crooked Man. Mignola and Christopher Golden are on script duty and — in possibly a more intriguing development – Brian Taylor, Aka one half of Crank duo Neveldine/Taylor is aboard to direct.
The story will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

After the failure of the last Hellboy reboot, Millennium Media is giving the fan-favourite comic-book character another shot. It was announced just days ago that Brian Taylor had signed on to direct Hellboy: The Crooked Man, a new reboot which will be scripted by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola in collaboration with Christopher Golden. While speaking with Collider, Taylor spilled a few details about Hellboy: The Crooked Man, including that it will be an R-rated folk horror movie.

“So first of all, I love the character of Hellboy and my favorite run of the character is this particular era,” Brian Taylor said. “The Gdt movies were massive scale space operas and just pure Del Toro through and through. But some of the comics Mike (Mignola) was doing at the time had a very different feeling. More lean and mean, creepy folk horror.

Originally reported by Discussing Film a few days back, Millennium Media is developing a new live-action Hellboy film, and that scoop has been confirmed by Deadline today.
Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Mom and Dad) has been chosen to direct the movie for Millennium, currently titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
As the title suggests, it’s based on a Hellboy mini-series from 2008.
Production is starting next month in Bulgaria, Deadline reports. The story is said to “expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”

Hellboy is officially headed back to the big screen. Deadline confirms that a reboot of the demonic hero, titled "Hellboy: The Crooked Man," is in the works at Millennium Media and Dark Horse Entertainment. The news was first broken by Discussing Film.
"The Crooked Man" will feature the third live-action iteration of Hellboy, following the ones played by Ron Perlman (in Guillermo del Toro's duology) and David Harbour (in Neil Marshall's 2019 reboot). The script is being co-written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and his frequent collaborator Christopher Golden. Brian Taylor is set to direct. Deadline confirms that production will start in Bulgaria come March and casting conversations are well underway; according to Discussing Film, the studio is seeking a younger actor in their 20s or 30s to play the new Hellboy. That's because "The Crooked Man" takes place at an earlier point in Hellboy's life than previous movies — the 1950s,...

While 2019’s Hellboy reboot definitely didn’t open the door for a franchise, Millennium Media is going to try again, with Deadline announcing Hellboy: The Crooked Man, which the company hopes will be the franchise starter the last movie wasn’t. This Hellboy reboot is set to be directed by Brian Taylor, formerly half of the directing team Neveldine/Taylor. As a pair, the directors helmed the Crank movies, while Taylor, on his own, directed the pretty decent horror flick, Mom and Dad.
Deadline reports that the new film is set to be written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola himself, alongside frequent collaborator Chris Golden. The pair will be adapting their own graphic novel, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” which was a prequel set in the fifties. As per Deadline’s description:

The first The Conjuring film got a spin-off, Annabelle, that was so success it spawned a franchise of its own. So it made sense when it was announced that The Conjuring 2 was going to get two spin-offs. One was The Nun, which is now getting a sequel. The other was The Crooked Man. But five years have passed since The Crooked Man was first announced, and there has been no sign that it was ever close to production. Now producer James Wan has confirmed that The Crooked Man has been scrapped.
Wan took to Instagram to share some behind-the-scenes images of him and the Crooked Man on the set of The Conjuring 2, and said, “Throwback to my tall friend, the Crooked Man played by the incredible Javier Botet. Javier’s movement was almost supernatural, some people knocked the character for being CGI. I filmed him in slowmo and...

The Conjuring Universe continues to grow with The Nun 2 and The Conjuring 4 on the way, but there’s one character no longer getting the spinoff treatment: The Crooked Man.
Director James Wan took to Instagram recently to share throwback photos of his scene-stealing The Conjuring 2 character, played by Javier Botet. The behind-the-scenes images give a closer look at Botet in character and the vibrant red hues of his pinstripe suit.
Wan got ahead of the inevitable question with the news that the long-awaited spinoff for this character isn’t happening, at least for the foreseeable future. Wan wrote in his post, “And no, unfortunately, the spinoff movie with this character isn’t happening. Outside of my control. But maybe one day.”
The post came with the reminder that The Crooked Man was all Botet and camera tricks, “I filmed him in slowmo and reverse playback — all old-school camera trickery.

James Wan is unquestionably one of our true modern horror masters, as the man behind "Saw," "Insidious," and the shepherd of "The Conjuring" universe. The man has several huge franchises under his belt and, not for nothing, is probably responsible for the most reliable cinematic universe outside of Marvel. One of his biggest hits to date is "The Conjuring 2," a rare sequel that lived up to its predecessor.
Many horror fans remember the follow-up for introducing the demon nun Valak, played by Bonnie Aarons. But Wan's original plans for the movie's big demon were radically different. While the filmmaker had talked about these plans in the past, he's now offered a pretty incredible look at what could have been.
A Radical Departure

Universal’s attempt at replicating Marvel Studios’ shared universe model and applying it to the horror genre didn’t go so well at first, and they’ve since admitted that the Dark Universe experiment was a total failure. But Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man certainly got things off on the right foot the second time around.
On the other side of town, meanwhile, Warner Bros. have not only managed to find success using the McU formula for their own superhero series, but they’ve also established The Conjuring Universe as the single biggest brand in horror. So far, the two Conjuring movies and five spinoffs have raked in over $1.9 billion at the box office, and next year’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, a sequel for The Nun and a film based on The Crooked Man look set to continue the brand’s consistent streak of success.

The third movie in the “Annabelle” franchise has been titled “Annabelle Comes Home,” New Line Cinema announced Friday.
The horror film will hit theaters on June 28 of this year. Gary Dauberman — who will be making his directorial debut — wrote the screenplay and co-wrote the story with horror guru James Wan. Peter Safran and Wan are producing.
The film stars Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The latter two are reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren from the “Conjuring” franchise.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe receives a lot of praise for constructing tightly woven multi-film plot arcs that contribute to a wider story, Warner Bros. have quietly been building their own version in the Conjuring Universe, which currently consists of The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017) and, coming on September 7th, The Nun.
The films have received middling-to-positive critical notices, but they’ve really excelled financially – for example, Annabelle made back 40 times its $6.5 million budget. Even better for New Line and Warner Bros., the combined box office take for the universe is an impressive $1.2 billion. All this makes it unsurprising that they’re scheduling a couple more films to bolster those numbers even further, and have confirmed today that a future entry is due for release on July 3rd, 2019.

Valak is ready for her close-up.
As New Line Cinema prepares to, ahem, conjure up The Nun‘s first trailer, today brings forth what is perhaps the perfect teaser image (see below) of Bonnie Aarons’ demonic entity, who can be seen peeking out of the shadows.
Following her small, yet memorable turn in The Conjuring 2, the Powers That Be quickly issued the green light on a spinoff movie dedicated to The Nun – ditto for The Crooked Man – before appointing Corin Hardy (The Crow) at the helm. And the rest is history.
When it comes to today’s first-look teaser, in particular, it’s a simple, yet remarkably effective photo in that it shows Valak draped in darkness. Only her gaunt, solemn face peers out of the darkness, which is every bit as unsettling as you’d expect from a horror franchise dreamed up by James Wan.

Four films deep, The Conjuring universe is now widely considered to be a cornerstone of Hollywood’s horror scene. Not bad for a film franchise that flickered into life only four years ago.
In that time, James Wan (Aquaman) has delivered The Conjuring and its sequel, The Enfield Poltergeist, while director John R. Leonetti broke course to focus on the nightmarish little doll known as Annabelle. A worldwide haul in excess of $256 million was enough to warrant a sequel (read: Annabelle: Creation), which is now available via Blu-ray and DVD.
Not only was it another feather in New Line’s cap – Creation topped its predecessor’s haul by almost $50 million at the global box office – but David Sandberg’s chilling follow-up helped expand The Conjuring universe into uncharted territory. Next up? The Nun, though we’re now hearing that it’s been delayed, with the studio pushing it from July 13th to September 7th.

A bit of a surprise this, as the new Annabelle movie punches above its weight a little. Here's our review...
There's likely to be some justifiable trepidation about the quality of Annabelle: Creation, the fourth film in what the marketing now bills as 'the Conjuring universe', given the poor reception for the first Annabelle spin-off and the generally low hit-rate of studio horror movies among even moderately well-read genre fans.
But it's not even 12 months since director Mike Flanagan turned Ouija: Origin Of Evil into one of the most surprising films of last year. His prequel to the profitable but poor Hasbro horror was an engaging and creative chiller, and Creation has drawn favourable comparisons for the way in which it also brings in a new director - David F Sandberg, fresh off last year's Lights Out - to reinvigorate the latest studio-mandated spin-off. It hardly reaches the heights that Flanagan did,...

I'm such a huge fan of The Conjuring films. It's just such a great horror movie franchise and I'm excited for all the spinoff films that are coming. The weekend we have Annabelle: Creation coming out, which looks amazing. The other films currently in development are The Conjuring 3, The Nun, and The Crooked Man.
While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Wan opened up and talked a bit about The Conjuring 3 and The Crooked Man. He talks about not rushing and making sure the films are done right. As well as giving the spinoffs a different flavor.
The Conjuring 3 is currently in development with David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2) writing the script. Wan won't be back to direct this third chapter of the story because he'll be busy with Aquaman, but he'll make sure that the next Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) story will have...

Wes Craven’s original Dream Demon is heading back to the silver screen once more, as New Line Cinema is engineering a new take on A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Seemingly unperturbed by the reception of the middling 2010 reboot – which failed to impress critically or financially – we understand that New Line, “the house that built Freddy,” is keen on bringing the screen icon back for another scarefest. With David Leslie Johnson attached to write the script, studio executives Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter will oversee the nascent reboot.
That was the last update we got on the project and it arrived back in August of 2015. It’s been two years then since any news about the film has emerged and understandably, some fans are starting to get worried that it’s slipped into development hell.
Fortunately, that’s not the case, as Bloody Disgusting has done some investigating...

Piece by piece, the Conjuring Universe is beginning to establish itself as a cornerstone of Hollywood’s horror genre. Up until now, Warner Bros. and New Line’s nerve-shredding franchise has made room for three feature films – namely The Conjuring and its unnerving sequel, The Enfield Poltergeist, along with Annabelle – but already there are plans in place for Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and The Crooked Man.
The latter two are based on characters introduced via The Conjuring 2, and while The Crooked Man is a project still in its infancy, The Nun has already set sights on a firm release date: July 13th, 2018. The Crow director Corin Hardy is at the helm of New Line’s spinoff, and over the past few weeks, Hardy has been busy posting status reports via Instagram.
Pulled together by the folks over at Bloody Disgusting, below you’ll find a series of behind-the-scenes pics from The Nun, including stills of a tight-knit crew, exterior shots of a graveyard, and dusty old ornaments from a bygone era – so everything you’d expect from a Conjuring spinoff movie, really.

Set within the universe created by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, The Nun has tapped an all-star cast, too, including Taissa Farmiga, the daughter of series stalwart Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren). Demian Bichir, Bonnie Aarons, Charlotte Hope, Jonas Bloquet and Ingrid Bisu round out the ensemble cast.
Here’s the official logline, courtesy of WB:
The story centers on a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania taking her own life, with a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret and confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun from The Conjuring 2.
The Nun will be with us on July 13th, 2018.
