Kevin Smith episodes are always interesting. In the 4 or 5 CW episodes he has directed, his divisive style hasn't overshadowed the storytelling. Tonight's Supergirl was a prime case of an episode unsure whether it wants to be big and bold, or crumble into forgettable filler episode territory.

Should we expect Mon-El's mother and other Daxumite's to be the big bad's of season 2 now? I really thought we were heading in the direction of Luthor v Danvers this season, but with how this episode ends, I can only assume we will see Rhea back again by season's end. Tonight, she put a bounty on Supergirl as she is the only thing in the way of bringing Mon-El back to Daxum. It wasn't the most eventful episode, but it had some fun moments. Luckily, we got a more mature and diminished take on the Kara-Mon romance. Sometimes less is more.

Speaking of romance, Alex & Maggie had their weekly fight as the ladder kept the fact that she cheated on an ex-girlfriend from her. Again, these fights are trivial at best. In fact, I don't think anyone has to worry about this relationship going anywhere anytime soon. If the writers listen to the fans at all, this is one thing they shouldn't touch. But it is nice to see characters deal with real human issues in a mature way. I feel like I always find myself comparing this relationship with Supergirl & Mon-El's, but seriously, there's a massive gap in quality.

So as the conflict with Rhea progressed, it became clear to me that the president was working with her in some capacity. We know she's an alien from a previous episode, but why she be so persistent on keeping Jonn away from them? So, perhaps this could be an area where we get some movement on this season's big bad. After all, we did get an ominous message from her about Jonn's potential punishment for his actions tonight.

As a whole this episode didn't make any major changes in the dynamic this season, but it provided entertainment through the action and romances nonetheless. Hopefully, we can have a clearer indication about where this season is going relatively soon.

+Sanvers

+Solid action

-Still no progress made in big bad department

Supergirl - S02E17 Distant Sun

Warning: Spoilers
Is there a chance that Supergirl is on the up? 2 weeks ago we had a really solid episode, but then last week they threw that all away and gave us what was in my opinion, one of the worst episodes of Supergirl we have had. With that, I was expecting more of the same disappointment in this week's episode and the ever steepening trend to continue, but I was surprised. I didn't know til later that this was a Kevin Smith directed episode. So far I have loved the episodes of Flash he has directed however I wasn't so high on his first Supergirl episode earlier this season.

No, this was not the best episode ever, and no it was not better than the episode 2 weeks ago, but this episode was a step in the right direction. They toned back on the secondary plot and love stories to spend a bit on time heading towards the big finale. This is what I want the show to do for the rest of the season. They need to concentrate on the story that actually matters.

I say every week that I am okay with a bit of relationship stuff each week however it should be background stuff. I thought they did a really good job of that this week. While we still got a little with Alex and Maggie, I thought their stuff was very appropriate because they are the strongest relationship currently on the show. I don't mind as much when they do have a bit of attention on them because for me they are the Barry/Iris relationship of Supergirl. The other big relationship they have been revolving around is Kara and Mon-El, and I thought they toned them back so much this episode and were able to use them to concentrate on the story plot. I'm not sure if it's because they have solved their drama in the Flash crossover episode, but from here on I am happy for them to be a relationship but it needs to be a side point. I get that the main story arc for the episode was Mon-El wanting to stay with Kara, the difference is that the choice was between Kara and his parents, something we had been building to for such a long time, and not just some silly little white lie that everyone loses their mind over.

Still on Mon-El, thank god they gave him something to do this episode. I have said for a while that I expected him to have a stronger role in the back end of the season and it's great that it is started to kick in because he now has a use rather than be there just for love drama. I think in the next few episodes that we are going to see more of him as a character than we have so far. Which brings me to a small prediction. I don't think he will be around come season 3. While I think he has been a very underutilised character in the show and it is a shame that he would be gone so quick, I don't see this ending in a way that doesn't involving him leaving the show, whether it is through death or needing to leave Earth. My guess is he will leave Earth to be king of Daxon once his mother is dealt with.

Something small that I need to touch on because it annoyed me so much throughout the episode is Teri Hatcher's crown. Not once did it appear to be sitting straight on her head. I'm not sure if they just missed that during her costuming but when something like that is such a statement in her costume and it has a big point on it, it is easy to notice when it isn't in the middle of her head.

Overall, while it wasn't the best episode, it stood out as a good episode amongst some of the ones they have produced since returning from the break. I'm interested to see how they are going to handle the rest of the season. We now have about a month off from Supergirl, along with Flash and Arrow, so maybe that might be some much needed time to work out how to save this season.

Aren't You A Little Short for A Stormtrooper?

Warning: Spoilers
Best so far. Mostly because I've been underestimating Supergirl writers all this time, but this episode just proved me wrong. Thanks, Kevin, for making use of J'onn a lot more. It's been a while.

Uhm, let's start on the bad stuff first: (1) I feel like The Daxamites Royals communicate in a strange way. Cold. Detached. I know Mon was probably kind of an abused kid, and he might not like his parents so much. But, still.. (2) Alex-Maggie relationship stuff didn't really have anything to do with the main story line, but hey... we love them. So, what the hell. (3) Parts of Kara-Mon-El's couch conversation didn't really work for me. The whole 'I admire you' thing got me like, "Oh God, you're damn hot, and you love me, and I like you, and I might fall in love with you, and you left everything to be with me, and you never feel threaten by me being the more powerful one, and you're one of few people who see me as Kara Zor-El, not Kara Danvers or Supergirl, and you keep getting better and better, and I like that, so you can stop saying things that are too sweet to hear cos it's just too much and it starts to sound like bullshits.." Yeah, knock it off, writers! But the kiss stealing was great.

And then the good stuff! Where do I start??

Oh, THE FLIGHT RING! OMG. Another nod, all the nerds were jumping off their seats. Me too! Even better, then Kara & Mon-El appeared in the same scene. Perfect.

The moment Kara reacted to her hologram and said, "Hey, that's me!" God, that was so cute. I loved it.

Helicopter parenting. Palatable. I cook now. Mixologist. Mon at his best. That's great. Please stop giving us annoying Mon-El, writers. Stop it. It hurts. I hope from this point forward this is the kind of Mon-El we're gonna get. And give him a proper suit, for God's sake!

J'onn got to be the badass! YES!

Mon & Kara's fight was cool.

And of course, Star Wars reference for Winn. Winn for winning! There should be an upcoming scene where Mon & Winn go to Comic Con together :D

The poor Daxamite guard got sucked into space and stabbed by Kryptonite. Overkill. But gave us a weird giggle (Yes, I know that was mean).

And the surprising twist at the end when Rhea did that horrible thing. OMG. That was great. She has all the legit reasons to be the badass villain. Awesome.

This season's bad mother: Lillian Luthor & Rhea. And I'm pretty sure Pres. Marsdin and Rhea share a connection somehow. Maybe an upcoming invasion?? We'll see.

So I guess a credit goes to Kevin Smith as director. He did great. I hope he will direct more episodes in the future.

More bad writing

Warning: Spoilers
One statement from Mon-El: "If she dies, not only will I never return, but I will make sure you suffer." Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't. If he sells it, it works.

And I am really really tired of all these shows, especially this one, where people don't follow orders. For about the 50,000 time J'onn should be fired and the rest of them as well. Even though as we see at the end of this episode that the President isn't the President, her orders are the right ones and they should have been followed.

But that makes too much sense. We obviously shouldn't expect anyone to do what's reasonable in this show. The trouble is that it's true of about every show on television.
