Thanagarian Snare Beast

Did anybody really think a Thanagarian Snare Beast would ever make it to the big screen, let alone small screen? Well, Supergirl introduced one tonight as Kevin Smith finally got to make what was (sort of) his pitch for a Superman movie back in the late 90's.

After seeing Jon Schnepp's documentary on the history behind the originally pitched 'Superman Lives' movie, there was a part of me that actually wanted to see Kevin Smith's take. Ridiculous is an understatement as Jon Peters uniquely obscure vision overtook Smith's passion project, but Smith put his stamp on this particular episode. Much like his first Flash directed episode last season, this episode felt both like a departure from the show as well as exactly what we needed coming out of a long break. I mean, we got an episode that didn't deal with the main antagonists of the show and yet it was perhaps the grandest of episodes in terms of scope this season.

What was built up as a solid mystery into the disappearances of several unlinked citizens, turned into a charming space bound adventure with surprisingly entertaining new characters (and a quick look at a Dominator from the crossover). Whilst all that's happening, the episode did feature a few romantically focused scenes. I'm a huge fan of the Sanvers relationship, but their 'fight' felt contrived and out of place. If they are going to break up, I'd hate it to end so abruptly. Maggie did find out that Kara was Supergirl because of this 'fight', however, so perhaps this could lead to something.

Kara and Mon-El seemed to have some serious development on their end as well with the ladder deciding he officially wants to throw his name in the superhero group after all. Not shocking, but exciting for sure. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the series now is the exact plans for his character, especially seeing the last scene. He'll be important in the back half. Overall, it was a nice return for Supergirl, and I think this show has finally found its footing.

+Fun adventure

+Kevin Smith's stamp all over it

+One-off episode

-Romances felt forced

Supergirl - S02E09 Supergirl Lives

Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl is back! After an outstanding first half of the season, I was excited to see what the second half had install and it all started with this episode. I've loved the first two Kevin Smith episodes he did on the Flash so I was excited to see what he could do with Supergirl. While the director on a TV does not have much of an overall impact on the quality of the show, after two great outings, it's hard not to think he is doing something right.

Overall I really liked this episode. I didn't think this was in anyway the greatest episode of Supergirl but it was good start to the second half of the season. Barring the main story line, we got to the end of this episode and we can see where this second half of the season is heading. While I'm still not sure what those two figures are looking for Mon-El, its exciting to see that he will be playing a big part in the back end of the season.

While on the topic of Mon-El, I'm looking forward to see what they are going to do with him now that he is heading down the superhero route. I'm imagining he is going to be some sort of Superboy with the red suit, however we won't really know until the coming weeks.

One of the big things coming out for the first half of the season was the relationship of Alex and Maggie. I really liked how they showed how far they have progressed as a couple since our mid-season finale. I did get a couple of warning signs though that they were hinting that there was problems starting to form in the relationship. While I'm all for keeping it interesting, I don't see the purpose of dragging out their getting together for half a season then a few episodes later having their relationship on the rocks. A similar thing happened with Kara and Jimmy and I don't want to see a similar thing happen again.

I did have a couple of negatives though about the episode. I thought while the overall premise of this episode was good, it could have easily been a bit bigger that what we got. While I thought the Dominators tie in was cool, there wasn't much else I was taking away from the story. Whenever shows like this and Flash go to a different planet or Earth, I want it to be more in line with what we got when the Flash went to Earth 2. In this episode it felt like they were only on the planet for 15 minutes and they were able to accomplish everything they needed in this short amount of time. From a story point of view I would of liked this to be a two parter story which we got later in the season.

Another downside I had with this episode was some of the general writing, especially dialog. I thought some of the lines sounded out of place and cheese and some of the things that happened seemed a bit to easy. I think part of it does come back to having to fit a story line like this into a 40 minute episode as well as try and set up the second half of the season.

Overall, I liked the episode but had a few negatives about it. I'm excited to see how they build off what we got this episode and turn this into an entertaining second half of the season.

Supergirl Lives!

Warning: Spoilers
(SPOILERS)

Kara (Supergirl) wants to help a woman whose teenage daughter Izzy (Harley Quinn Smith) is missing but the police wouldn't help her saying she's just a runaway. Upon finding out that more people from National City have been disappearing she follows the clues into a door that can connect to another planet, a planet where the Kara has no super powers under its red sun, so in order to save them she has to put her own life in danger and once again show the world what the "S" symbol means.

About 20 years ago Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) was asked to write a new Superman movie to be produced by Jon Peters (Wild Wild West) and Directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Alice in Wonderland), which would have had Superman (Nic Cage) fighting Braniac, Doomsday and a Giant Spider dubbed "Thanagarian Snare Beast", luckily that never happened.

As luck would have it, Smith has directed two episodes for CW's The Flash, and now he has come to direct one of the best episodes of an already great TV show, a show that has so much action, drama, and emotions that it has made us "believe that a woman can fly".

Tonight's episode will go in the books as one of the greatest episodes of a Comic Book TV Show.

Thank you Melissa Benoist and Kevin Smith for proving to us that Supergirl Lives!

What is going on with this show?

Warning: Spoilers
I loved Alex in this episode, however, I'm not a fan of them acting like she's an alcoholic. And again with Mon-El, he has more chemistry with Eliza than he does Kara. It's obvious that they've sidelined James, the lead actor of the series, to match Kara up with the intergalactic frat boy. Chris Wood is funny, but Mon-El is written so poorly. And why does Kara have to save him, yes, he's better for knowing her, that doesn't mean that they should be together. Kara and James actually made more sense and the most obvious reason to break them up would have been when James was made temporary CEO. Then he could have thrown the breaks on the relationship and maybe, just maybe this thing with Mon-El could be more believable. But could they just write Mon-El better? The other male characters are not written this badly, I don't understand where they're going with this and why have Kara break up with James so that she can focus on herself only to have her focus on Mon-El instead?
