1985 is an odd little film indeed, clearly written and directed by somebody with a yearning to make a film in the same style as THE GOONIES, hence the title. The twist is that this is a locally-produced film made by a Hmong-American cast and crew. The story is about a group of Hmong teenagers who decide to go off on a quest to find a mythical dragon, but the non-existent budget means that there are no fantasy tropes and no special effects, merely a lot of talk, bonding, and life lessons en route. The cheapness gives the film a naturalistic look but sadly there's not much here to hold the attention and it's only going to have a very specialist audience.
