Decent adaptation
Clive_W25 June 2019
I love the comic series, big fan, when I heard they were making a show I couldn't wait, I was skeptic over SYFY being the ones behind the show, seeing as they have cancelled a lot of decent shows in recent months. And today it was sadly made official, we won't be getting a second season, such a shame, all fans of the comic know what would have been coming in the next season with the "die for me" arc. But not like it can be change, we have the one season to enjoy and at the very least we have the comics.

If you haven't read the comics I would strongly recommend, especially if you enjoyed the show.

Although the show has been cancelled I would recommend people to check it out, it seemed to be received well with critics, and viewer numbers weren't bad, it was never meant to be a mainstream show, I don't expect it to be a show for everyone.

If you want some fun, bit of change from mainstream tv shows, this is worth checking out.

The overall feel to the show was interesting, I loved the way it was filmed, the Vegas episode was a great take on fear and loathing, and overall was fairly close to the comic, with a couple changes here and there for tv reasons to fill out 10 episodes. So go check it out enjoy, and maybe check out the comic to.

Class Cancelled
Dragava14 February 2020
Another show snuffed out before its time, "Deadly Class" operates on a level mature enough to keep your attention and playful enough to retain its rock-n-roll roots for ten fun episodes.

Netflix should Renew to Season 2! C'mon!
potenciano22 November 2020
A show that was cancelled but worth saving! I'm really hoping for Season 2. I didn't get to watch in Syfy and only got the chance to watch it in Netflix. The show is action packed, I'd love to see more of Marcus and friends on a mission, Lana Condor portraying as Saya is a total badass, I just really want to see more!

Shame it was cancelled.

I was laying in bed one evening and I saw an advertisement for this series. I thought it looked good and marked the premiere date on my calendar. The violence and dark theme was a pleasant surprise after watching episode one (I'm used to dark shows being watered down). The story was alright, but every episode was like an acid trip. Literally, one episode was just an acid trip. Still, I stuck with the show until the end. Sucks they cancelled it, on a cliff hanger no less. Reminds me of what almost happened to Lucifer.

Hmmm. This was canceled and Vagrant Queen is on?!
GKoeneke23 May 2020
Yeah, I liked this one a lot! It's brutal and has a lot of great potential for the characters. To me, it looked like everyone else loved it.

I'm still confused by what SyFy is doing with there shows. They are cancelling good ones, they basically let The Expanse go to Amazon and it did because it was a proven hit, and they are putting up crap shows. I've watched 4 episodes of Vagrant Queen and it is horrible! I was in shock to see them stop Channel Zero. That was on brand horror anthology I felt could compete with American Horror Story, the reboot of The Twilight Zone and Apples new Amazing Stories.

I think the people in charge at SyFy need to be replaced across the board. Something isn't working over there and they need new ideas and some kind of intelligent plan for new series that take the channel in the right direction. Reality TV and Campy Sci-Fi Space series aren't cutting it. Next thing you know this series will be picked up by Netflix and they'll cancel The Magicians! SMH!!!!

Brilliant
nph19-195-81228917 January 2019
I was very surprised by just how good this show is. It sticks to the comic. And to the people saying it's unrealistic, of course it is. It's a comic. The premise is ridiculous, but that's one reason why it's so good. Comics show us a different, unrealistic world and that's why we love them. This is exactly what this show does.

going gone
SnoopyStyle5 June 2019
It's 1987 San Francisco. Homeless street kid Marcus Lopez Arguello is suspected of setting the boys home on fire and killing many of the other kids. In reality, he didn't set the fire and escaped from the orphanage which is little more than a sweatshop. He is recruited by Saya into King's Dominion, a school for teenage assassins run by Master Lin.

I like the dark tones and the fun nihilism. I like the comic book style. I like many of the actors although there may be a few too many main characters. I'm not sure if Benjamin Wadsworth is charismatic enough to lead but I do like Lana Condor and Benedict Wong. The main issue is a lack of narrative drive. It needs a MacGuffin. It needs a real story. The show creates a setting but it spins its wheels with the plot. I held on to the fun and concepts for as long as possible but the story never gels for me. It's canceled after 10 episodes.

Looks nice, but it's just a teenage drama
Dimakovtun6 November 2020
The series aren't very bad, at first sight with interesting settings, but behind the costumes and the main plot of being a school for killers, it's 90% of a boring US teenage drama about a highschool, with all the cliches you can imagine: underdog brave hero who gathers a loyal team, and who's actually much more skilled than everyone expects, love interests fighting for the love of the hero, damsel in distress, nerdy fat guy, light drugs and mad partying, school clubs/gangs, strict director with strict rules nobody follows, dumb and brutal arch-enemy. Behind the facade it's the drama that everyone knows and had seen since 80s at least. Simply boring, and a few action scenes make it barely watchable.

This show could be much more, but it decided not to be. Shame.

What do you know, I actually enjoyed this!
st_stoimenov22 December 2018
I cannot assess whether the late-80's-America's atmosphere had been recreated authentically enough - I'm not an American - but even within the cinematic art's strict context, I think that the whole thing was pretty well done.

I especially enjoyed the soundtrack.

A large portion of the series' cast is rather young, more or less, and although it hardly can be described as a talent pool, these young actors aren't without a promise as well. Most of them obviously are at the very beginning of their respective careers and we should take that into account too when the acting is being evaluated.

Unrealistic but enjoyable
Valentijn7830 December 2018
Obviously the basic premise is ridiculous - a school for teenaged killers to beat up on each other and learn how to kill more effectively. But the moral quandaries and characters are interesting enough, and it comes with decent filming and a good sound track.

It is largely a cliche high school series from the 1980's thus far, with the usual social stratification made a little more interesting at least. But considering the amount of characters belonging to hate groups and other forces of destruction, the pilot episode did a good job of sending a much more inclusive message without getting preachy about it.

The moral (or immoral?) messages regarding violence are very complex, and I don't share the fears of some other reviewers that this show might be endorsing murdering sprees. What it does do is make people think about things a bit more.

Off to a great start!
uygooey22 December 2018
After watching the pilot, I was genuinely surprised. The show does a great job of capturing the essence of the comic book while moving the plot along at a good pace. So much potential for this show!

Awesome comic book adaptation
Calicodreamin30 April 2020
I'd never heard of the comic book before watching this show, but you could tell it was adapted from one, it gives off the vibes. I really enjoyed the show, the acting was good, the action well coordinated, and the premise intriguing. I thought it was very well made, I'm disappointed it only got one season!

Very Nice.
LukeCustomer223 February 2019
I never knew anything about this comic but this show is deeply startling. This show is set in the late 80s so I can relate to it as I was a teen then. It reminds me of a much darker new mutants or a gender swapped La Femme Nikita. The main character Marcus is recruited into this school that trains teens for deadly purposes. Marcus is "the one" in that his life has been so bad up until now he really could be the most deadly. Marcus is very compelling for me. He is both deeply jaded, bitter, and able to handle himself alone, but also, deeply, quietly afraid of being alone. As you did in the 80s, he makes friends with the "freaks" of the school and they have their adventures. I would have given it a 10 but there were two problems for me. I found the sound editing to be super bad. At first you think it is you but then the commercials are loud and clear. The middle episodes seem to be slowing and are filler. But I think it is coming to an epic conclusion. Definitely would recommend it.

I Don't Think Some of You Get it!
tryniti98730 December 2018
First, this show is based off an American comic series, it's not just made up out of nowhere. The comic is very closely related to the japanese manga Assassination Classroom. If you are hating on the plot, it's because you know absolutely nothing of the premise. ALL Tv shows and Movies are unrealistic. TV and Movies are an extension of Theater. Theater productions specialize in dramatizing and exaggerating the story visually, that's the point. I digress.

I watched the whole pilot twice. I will agree on the second view I started to see the holes. There really wasn't much build up, so I hope over the next few episodes we see some really strong character development. The production value is top notch, I almost thought I was watching an HBO series.

Where this series might fail a bit, is the writing, and development of characters which seems to be an issue throughout tv and the film industry. The dialog between characters can be a bit stale and cliched.

I could spend all day poking holes in other people's hard work. I am not that guy though. This is something a little different than what we are used to watching on TV, so allow yourself to be entertained. If you are one of those people who are going to pick everything to pieces, don't waste your time. Remember it's still the SyFy channel. They aren't known for their stellar production and actors. So far I like the show, and I am willing to deal with the holes for now. Let's watch the rest of the season and see how it goes.

Promising start to a fresh comic-based series
skpn12310 January 2019
The annoying thing here is how long I have to wait for episode 2 LOL - so many plots to develop and so many directions things could go in. This is not for tweens - a lot of violence and young adult themes but it certainly holds the interest. It is what it is and everything is slick, fast-paced and well-done.

Overall, pretty watchable
andrew-hill5153 May 2019
Set in the 80's, and done pretty well. Relatively enjoyable. You do sort of wonder how a girl of clearly Vietnamese descent is highly placed in the Yakuza, though, but maybe her clan is progressive.

I love this kind of series; action, intrigue, mystery, more action, what will happen next? So far it does not disappoint.

Deliciously dark
asphyxion_24 January 2019
Fans of "The Expanse" will find a similar, high quality production value with "Deadly Class." The 80's goth-punk-pseudopolitical backdrop of the show creates a moody atmosphere dripping with dark tones and mature themes. It's an adaptation that does the graphic novel justice.

The show has an excellent pace with just enough twists to keep you hanging on for more. The action is great and the foley sound work gives a realistic feel to the action scenes. The dialogue can get surprisingly philosophical, with one of the show's central themes (and questions often discussed) being "when is murder justified?"

"Deadly Class" gives us an excellent start to 2019 and is a big leg up for Syfy. My only complaint is Syfy has a habit of dropping shows right at their apex when they start getting ridiculously good. Case in point, look at "The Expanse," "Dark Matter," and "Defiance" to see what I am talking about.

I give it a solid A+, my first 10/10 rating.

Not for everyone
JShaft336 February 2019
It's The Magicians, only with Assassins instead of magic and an 80's backdrop. A few of the characters try a little too hard to act out their comic counterparts (overacting). I'm two episodes in - I'll keep watching but i'm not hooked just yet.

Hogwarts for homicidal wannabes
Narce29 March 2019
All the glowing reviews must have been posted by Sony employees and SyFy interns. This was a steaming pile of teen angst, contemptuous of everything but itself - which is the only thing that deserves contempt. No cliche will be left behind, no matter how wounded or disabled. This show is just too mundane to deserve my attention in the age of "peak tv"

Most fun I've had watching a show since Into the Badlands was cancelled.
DangerousDag15 November 2019
As other reviewers have said, the premise of this show is a bit ridiculous, but the world it creates does at least consistently follow its own canonical rules. The show is extremely well-written, with an appropriate infusion of glib and absurdist comedy, but what strikes me most about it is that, aside from the initial hook, there is very little deus-ex-machina: The characters behave very consistently, and most of the plotlines follow on directly as consequences of their actions, as opposed to as a result of fate or the insertion of last minute plot elements. The writers did a very good job of not bending the plot to fit the characters.

The characters themselves are relatable, especially the two mains, and in general the acting is quite good. I'm more than a little vexed that this was cancelled.

"Breakfast Club" meets "The Filth and The Fury"
johnh2224 February 2019
Deadly class is about a street kid who is offered a new life at a boarding school. Too good to be true? Yes, the school is for assassins and his new classmates are terrifying sociopaths. But hey, at least he has food, clothes, and a bed.

Deadly Class showcases gritty Kung Fu style action, colorful characters, and a great soundtrack of 1980s music -including some of the best Punk, Third Wave Ska, Metal, and New Wave music of the time.

While most images of the 1980s focuses on Hair bands, Preppies, and shallow excesses, Deadly Class shines a light on a somewhat ignored aspect of the 1980s: the Punk Counter culture that flew under the radar at the time. Slam dancing, Mohawks, Violent Femmes- Gotta Love it.

At its heart, Deadly Class is a coming of age story turned to "11." Teenage angst, first love, Misfits, Geeks, Freaks, clicks, self discovery: it's all there - except everyone at your school are killers and you could die at any time.
