Episode 1.1
Harlots is a bawdy, naughty romp. That is clear from the first episode.
Set in 1760s London, where women had few choices. It seems twenty percent of the women in the capital city were on the game.
Essentially this is a rivalry between two whorehouses. Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) is successful and made inroads with the aristocracy. She has little time for niceties and will let nothing stand on the way of her success. Quigley even sides with the morality movement to bring down her rivals.
Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton) is going up in the world. A woman with a plan and selling her daughter's virginities to the highest bidder is one way of going up a greasy pole.
It is a drama of survival and both the main characters will do what it takes to survive although Quigley looks like the scheming villainess here.
