Chicago – In a “mystery of faith” narrative disguised as a feminist statement, the new film “Novitiate” goes inside a nunnery in 1964 America, just as the Catholic Church was about to make some radical changes to their procedures. How it affected the church is how it affected the nuns, and the intriguing insider story is full of back room shocks.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The title refers to being a “novice” nun, as the main character is, and it follows her journey through her calling – and the background in her life that led to it – all the way to the point when she lives her vows. This film goes deep, both into the methods of the novice years and the backlash to them. It is anchored by one of the best actors working today, Melissa Leo as the Reverend Mother. The tics and anger she puts into this character are both insane and justified...

If you’re a fan of HBO’s “The Leftovers,” then you definitely are familiar with Margaret Qualley. The 22-year-old actress spent three seasons as Jill Garvey, the angsty teenage daughter of Justin Theroux’s character, but Qualley is about to become a major indie breakthrough with the upcoming release of “Novitiate.”

Marking the feature debut of Margaret Betts, the movie premiered to acclaim at Sundance earlier this year, where IndieWire raved, “Despite its 123-minute runtime, the film is impeccably edited and packed with such rich storytelling that it never lags. The film is Betts’ feature-length narrative debut and it’s a strong vehicle for showing off her formidable talents.”
“Novitiate” stars Qualley as Cathleen, a starry-eyed teenager who is training to become a nun. Her allegiance and faith are tested under the stern eye of Melissa Leo’s Reverend Mother.

By now, you hopefully have had a chance to check out Denis Villeneuve’s amazing sci-fi film Arrival, and if you have, then you’re likely to have been quite taken by the musical score by frequent Villeneuve collaborator, composer Johann Johannson.
Having been nominated for an Oscar for his score for Villeneuve’s 2016 crime thriller Sicario, Johannsson took a very different approach to the film that has Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner trying to communicate with aliens that have mysteriously come to earth with their intentions unknown.
Lrm got on the phone with Johannsson to talk about the music for Denis Villeneuve’s amazing film.
Lrm: This is your third movie with Denis. At what point does he get you involved? Obviously, he’s doing many movies back to back, so do you start working on “Arrival” before he even starts working or at what point do you start getting involved?...

The Performer | Bryce Dallas Howard
The Show | Black Mirror
The Episode | “Nosedive” (Oct. 21, 2016)
The Performance | As a chilling anthology of futuristic high-tech nightmares, each episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror is like a meticulously crafted short story, giving its actors a chance to bring a brand-new character to life. And Howard, of Jurassic World fame, did that in marvelous fashion in Season 3’s “Nosedive.”
Howard played Lacie, a bubbly young woman who’s obsessed with her social-media status. In the world of “Nosedive,” people rate each other on a five-star scale after every interaction — and a low rating can have dire consequences.
