In 2014, Gayle Rankin made her Broadway debut in Sam Mendes’ revival of Cabaret, playing the supporting role of Fraulein Kost. Now, exactly a decade later, Rankin is playing the lead role of Sally Bowles opposite Eddie Redmayne in a new Broadway production that opened April 21.
“I feel like a completely different person,” says Rankin, as she sits in her dressing room in a red dressing gown, with her blond hair clipped back. “It’s so rare that you get to see your life marked by something so actual, by a piece of work. And what a piece of work to be able to gauge where you are as a human being.”
In recent years, the Scottish actress — who grew up south of Glasgow — rose to prominence with a series of film and TV roles, including The Greatest Showman and HBO’s Perry Mason, and most notably as Sheila the She-Wolf...

Alison Brie has responded to Chevy Chase’s remarks about Community not being funny and “hard hitting” enough.
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live on Monday night, the Apples Never Fall star was asked by a fan what she thought about her former co-star’s comments.
Brie, who noted that the remark was made on her former Glow co-star Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast, of which she’s an avid listener, said she heard the comment live before it was covered online. “I actually think that was the better way to digest that information because I could hear Chevy’s tone,” she explained. “When you read it on a headline, it reads much harsher. I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s just Chevy being Chevy,’ and he’s entitled to his opinions and his experience of the show.”
The actress added that she doesn’t “take it personally.”

A new miniseries has been announced, and it looks fantastic.
We look at the cast list. What do we see? Oh, another show starring Nicole Kidman. Or Jake Lacy. Or Kate Winslet. Or Betty Gilpin.
You get the idea.
Look, we get it. A miniseries has limited episodes to make an impact, and a recognizable name can be a big draw.
Since it's become commonplace for renowned movie actors to make the move to television, particularly miniseries, why wouldn't a studio jump on the chance to nab a big name?
It's a winning formula -- literally.
Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. What television producer wouldn't want her attached to their project?
She's also snagged a couple of Emmys for her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She's proven her worth as a TV star.
The same can be said about Kate Winslet, who similarly made the jump from movies to television.

As /Film's resident wrestling obsessive, I've written quite a bit about how sports entertainment is a formative piece of how I process the media I consume, as well as waxing poetic about my appreciation for the Adonis and Venus mortals that walk amongst us on shows like "American Gladiator." I'm of the mindset that if a person must self-proclaim they are an expert, chances are, they are not. So while I will not claim to be an expert, I will say that my knowledge of cinema featuring pumped-up women and brawny babes is, uh, stronger than most.
Sure, there are plenty of films that feature swole ladies for a one-off visual gag or a background character, but there aren't many films that allow women who are jacked to the gills to take center stage. Sometimes, the films are specifically about these towering muscle mommies, and sometimes they're just action films...

Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired worldwide rights to “Daddy,” a sci-fi film that will be released in 2024.
The news comes as Anchor Bay is being relaunched after Umbrelic Entertainment chiefs Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz bought the company’s trademark. Anchor Bay was included in Starz’s 2016 sale to Lionsgate. Under Zambeck and Katz, Anchor Bay is looking to release genre films and cult favorites.
In the case of “Daddy,” the movie was co-written and co-directed by Neal Kelley and Jono Sherman in their feature debut. It stars Yuriy Sardarov (“Chicago Fire”), Jacqueline Toboni (“The L Word: Generation Q”), Pomme Koch (“WeCrashed“) and Britt Baron (“Glow”).
The film is set in a dystopian society where the state has the power to determine who can and cannot father children. Four men attend a government-mandated retreat in the remote mountains of California. When they arrive, there’s no guide or instructions waiting for them.

It’s now been over a month since I saw Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow and I haven’t been able to shake the experience from my mind. The staggering, genre-fluid tale of a boy-turned-adult looking for something to fill the void of emptiness in his life––and perhaps never finding it––was far and away the best film of Sundance. After a stop at Berlinale and forthcoming SXSW premiere, A24 will release it this summer. They’ve now debuted the first trailer ahead of the May 3 release.
I said in my Sundance review, “Tender yet rageful, quiet yet deafening, intimate yet expansive, Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow is a towering achievement of total artistic freedom, the kind of work where certain images will be eternally burned into your mind and the feelings it exudes will linger far after the credits roll. Jane Schoenbrun’s defining cinematic preoccupation was clear from their first feature, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. Young people in the digital age share a symbiotic relationship with the culture that exposes them to a world beyond their lived experiences, and the moving images these impressionable young minds consume end up consuming them.
Schoenbrun moves forward by looking back at the ’90s in their sophomore effort, I Saw the TV Glow, a mesmeric but frequently muddled exploration of transgender self-actualization through identification with a beguiling television program. The disconnect between story and style feels pronounced here, whereas in the writer-director’s first feature these modes of meaning-making felt mutually reinforcing. The film’s thematic content represents a watershed moment for trans cinema, yet it finds expression on screen most often through watered-down genre hallmarks.

The shows competing for the 2024 Best TV Stunt Ensemble SAG Award are “Ahsoka,” “Barry,” “Beef,” “The Last of Us,” and “The Mandalorian.” Based on our racetrack odds, “The Last of Us” performers (16/5) are the clear frontrunners, followed in order by those from “Ahsoka” (4/1), “The Mandalorian” (4/1), “Barry” (9/2), and “Beef” (9/2).
The team from “The Mandalorian” are this year’s only returning nominees, having triumphed on their sole previous bid in 2021. This makes the current lineup the fourth in the category’s 17-year history to include a single group of veterans, following cases involving “Dexter” (2011), “Westworld” (2021), and “Cobra Kai” (2022).
“Ahsoka” follows “The Mandalorian” and “Andor” as the third “Star Wars” series to contend for this honor, while it and the former are the first two shows in that franchise to directly face off here. The “Andor” performers were recognized for their first season last year but were ultimately bested by the “Stranger Things” crew.

After over 30 years and 1500 episodes, it was announced today that WWE's flagship program, "Raw," (or "Monday Night Raw") is exiting the linear television landscape and becoming a streaming exclusive for Netflix. The streaming juggernaut will become the exclusive new home for "Raw" starting in January 2025 in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Latin America, among other territories. Over time, more regions will be added as part of the deal. Eventually, the other WWE weekly programs like "SmackDown" and "Nxt" will also join the Netflix family once their existing deals with USA Network and The CW expire, as will additional programming like documentaries, original series, and other future projects.
Considering WWE has its own production studio, it would be unsurprising if Netflix became the new exclusive distributor of WWE Studios, although this has yet to be confirmed. But what is potentially the biggest get outside of "Raw" is...

Plot: An awkward teen (Justice Smith) and his friend (Brigette Lundy-Paine) become obsessed with a teen drama called The Pink Opaque. But, years after it gets cancelled, the lines between reality and fiction start to blur as they begin to wonder if perhaps they are part of the show they love.
Review: I Saw the TV Glow seems bound to be a conversation starter for horror fans once A24 puts it out later this year. By design, it’s a movie that’s meant to be dissected, with it defying genre expectations to the point that, for some folks, this will be a genuinely tedious experience. At the same time, others will love director Jane Schoenbrun’s stab at what the Sundance programmers have called “emo-horror.”

Writer-director Jane Schoenbrun’s new film, “I Saw the TV Glow,” is set for a buzzy Sundance premiere, shrouded in secrecy, and could be A24’s biggest horror release of 2024. Yet the heart of the film is delicate and intimate, centered around what the trans community refers to as “the egg crack moment.”
Schoenbrun, who is trans and non-binary, defines the term as “when you stop pretending you’re not trans, trying to desperately find every reason why you’re not, and admit for the first time that you are. That moment can reframe everything in your life.”
“Glow” is, at its core, a deeply personal story about teenagers finding that moment on their own, with Schoenbrun’s experiences and obsessions adding emotional specificity to every scene. The story follows two teen outcasts (Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine) who bond over “The Pink Opaque,” a cult TV show which makes them both feel seen.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Monday, December 18, 2023.
NBC's Magnum P.I. will conclude with a two-hour series, finale it has been announced.
After ending 2023 with two episodes still in the can, there were questions about when the show would return.
TVLine has revealed that the two episodes will air back-to-back on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, beginning at 9 p.m. E.T.
It's a real shame the series is ending because Magnum P.I. Season 5 has been the show at its very best, and there are plenty of ways it could continue.
Despite the cancellation, its passionate fans are not giving up the hope of finding the series a third home.
Meanwhile, MGM+ has announced a pickup of Beacon 23 Season 2.

MGM+ has renewed sci-fi mystery thriller series Beacon 23 for a second season. The eight-episode season 2 will premiere on the streaming service in April. The news is not a surprise. The series already had been renewed by Spectrum and AMC, where it originally had been greenlit, and MGM+ is now formally committing to air it.
Starring Stephan James and Lena Headey in Season 1, Beacon 23, based on the best-selling book by Hugh Howey, is created and executive produced by Zak Penn.
Set in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way, Season 1 followed Aster (Headey), a government agent, and Halan (James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates became entangled after they found themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that served as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers. In Season Two, Beacon 23 is now little more than a prison with Aleph onboard, and The Artifact provides more questions than answers.

This review contains spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
The world of professional wrestling is filled with enough tragedy to constitute its own dedicated documentary series about it, but there has never been a story of familial annihilation quite like the Von Erichs. Often compared to the Kennedy family, the Von Erichs were/are a dynasty of wrestling superstars and the subject of unimaginable despair. Telling their story outside of a documentary setting seems an impossible task, but Sean Durkin has done the impossible with "The Iron Claw." While marketed as a biopic, "The Iron Claw" is more like a dramatic retelling of the Von Erich story — a legend retold blow by blow and presented as if it were modern folklore. And yet despite the creative liberties taken — including a glaring omission (more on that later) — "The Iron Claw" is the type of drama that makes a home in the darkest...

I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.
The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.
Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

One would be forgiven for having absolutely no idea that a new action/comedy starring Jon Cena and Alison Brie hit theaters this past weekend. "Freelance" did, indeed, arrive in more than 2,000 theaters and was straight-up buried by the horror sensation that is "Five Nights at Freddy's." It would be one thing for a movie to come in second -- or even third place -- against a blockbuster release like that. Unfortunately for those behind this film, however, it barely made it into the top 10.
Relativity Media's "Freelance" opened to just $2 million, coming in at number eight on the charts for the weekend, per The Numbers. It made less than "The Nightmare Before Christmas" ($2.1 million), which is in the second weekend of its 30th anniversary re-release, and little more than "Saw X" ($1.7 million), which has been in theaters for five weekends. Director Pierre Morel is the man who made Liam Neeson into an action icon. His movie Taken established the middle-aged character actor as perhaps the 21st century’s biggest action icon, and it was an unlikely transformation. Truly, Morel is an ace action director, with his film District 13 being one of the best action movies of the last twenty years. Since Taken, he’s specialized in transforming actors into action stars, directing Sean Penn in The Gunman and Jennifer Garner in Peppermint. Both were pretty grim movies, so now Morel is turning to somewhat lighter material with Freelance.

Facing tight budgets and continued uncertainty in the entertainment sector, buyers at this year’s MipJunior are expected to largely stick to tried and true IP, but many still see opportunities for exciting original content.
In addition to presenting the hottest new kids’ shows from around the globe, MipJunior, which runs Oct. 13-15, will examine the latest developments and trends that are redefining the market, such as the state of co-production and financing amid audience fragmentation, consumer use of multi-platform media, the growing role of gaming and the emergence of disruptive technologies like AI.
“Given the current uncertainties in the sector around streamers and broadcasters, we see less appetite for risk and thus more interest in established brands and IP with built-in audiences,” says Bernd Wendeln, COO of Munich-based Your Family Entertainment (Yfe).
A subsidiary of Beverly Hills- based Kartoon Studios, Yfe’s recent hit titles include “Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten,...

The movie, The Red Shoes: Next Step, revolves around the life of a young girl, Samantha Cavanaugh, who is an extremely gifted ballet dancer. Her world comes crashing down when she loses her role model, her elder sister, Annie, to a road accident in New York. She never wanted to fit into her sister’s shoes within the academy, but she did want to follow her as a role model. The film is full of anticipation of something good coming Sam’s way, even after a huge loss. The movie reeks of passion, enthusiasm, and motivation that would help real-life artists relate to the character.
We might mistake the film for a remake of the movie The Red Shoes (1948), but the two stories are completely different. While the old movie depicts a turmoil between romance and career, The Red Shoes: Next Step is the story of the struggle for fulfillment...

Bill Burr is getting frustrated in the Old Dads trailer, which means he should be pretty amusing. Netflix has released the trailer for the foul-mouthed flick Old Dads.
Old Dads depicts three middle-aged friends who, after becoming fathers later in life, must deal with the challenges and tribulations of raising small children while experiencing midlife crises. Old Dads will be available on Netflix on October 20.
Old Dads follows its main three of old dads, as the title indicates. The group, which was already limited, is soon bound by another commonality: they all become dads later in life.
They must now confront parenting problems, such as adjusting to the huge life shift, clashing with school principals, trying to grasp anything particularly trendy, and more.
