On April 16, HBO launches the fourth and final season of its hit comedy series “Barry.” Bill Hader executive produces, directs, writes and stars in the nine-time Emmy-winning show. In the season opener we see Barry Berkman (Hader) call up his acting teacher, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), from prison. Even though Gene is responsible for Barry’s arrest, it’s his forgiveness the sociopathic killer seeks first.
Season 4 kicks off with rave reviews, holding fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus reads, “What began as a macabre comedy is now close to completely shorn of genuine mirth, but Bill Hader’s masterful indictment of stardom closes the curtain with one hell of an encore.” The ensemble cast includes Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Burns, Sarah Goldberg and Stephen Root. The Pink Ladies of “Grease,” the most colorful Rydell High students, are back on April 6 on Paramount+. However, this won’t be the same collection of young women from the original film — or even its cult classic sequel. This round, we see how the popular clique got its start. The girls now have a show of their own: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” a salute to 1950s teens who refuse to conform to conventional standards. The new musical series shows us Rydell High before Sandy and Danny start strutting down the halls. The show stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.

It's important not to mix up the 1959 John Wayne film "Rio Bravo" with the 1966 John Wayne film "El Dorado." As cinephile Chilli Palmer (John Travolta) points out in the 1995 film "Get Shorty," Dean Martin played the drunk in "Rio Bravo," while Robert Mitchum played the drunk in "El Dorado." Basically the same part. Chilli Palmer also points out that John Wayne played the same role in both films: he played John Wayne.
Dean Martin was no stranger to cinema by 1959, having already appeared in a dozen short films. The bulk of his output, however, was playing more or less himself opposite his comedy partner Jerry Lewis. His first feature film didn't come until 1957, in the Richard Thorpe rom-com "Ten Thousand Bedrooms," coming after splitting with Lewis. Immediately diversifying, Martin went on to star in the war film "The Young Lions" and Vincente Minnelli's "Some Came Running" before appearing in "Rio Bravo.

"Pulp Fiction" hit theaters on October 14, 1994 as a bona-fide, paradigm-shifting indie blockbuster. It was the film geek's "Easy Rider," a movie no one knew they needed until it got plunged deep into their veins. It's hard to believe Quentin Tarantino didn't know what he had prior to premiering the film at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, but, per a 2014 interview with his buddy Robert Rodriguez, his first screening for friends and esteemed colleagues wasn't entirely reassuring.
Let's take a step back and survey the cinematic landscape in 1994. Tarantino was the equivalent of Nirvana pre-"Nevermind." He was a hit with film geeks who'd mainlined "Reservoir Dogs" and connected with Tony Scott's high-style take on "True Romance," but there was something potentially gimmicky about his writing. His screenplays were laden with deep-tissue pop-culture references and wildly violent set pieces. Oliver Stone's take on "Natural Born Killers," released two months prior...

With a script based on an Elmore Leonard short story and a showrunner like Graham Yost, "Justified" always seemed like an easy sell. Pairing the acclaimed writer of "Get Shorty," "Out of Sight," and "Rum Punch" (later adapted into the Quentin Tarantino film "Jackie Brown") with a screenwriter, director, and producer who had worked on "Speed" and "Band of Brothers" was a slam dunk, and "Justified" quickly became a hot commodity.
The series was pitched to eight networks. According to Yost, six wanted to move forward with the project. In the end, the choice came down to FX and HBO. Given Yost's previous work on HBO's "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific," and star Timothy Olyphant's history working with the network on "Deadwood," you might think it would have been a no-brainer. And for Yost, it was. Just not in the direction one might have expected at the time.

The 1990s was a decade packed full of brilliant action movies but few, if any, reached the delirious heights of 1997’s Face/Off. Built around an absurd yet ingenious premise involving a cop switching faces with a comatosed master criminal in order to find and defuse a bomb, only for said bad guy to then awaken and return the favor, it featured a director and pair of A-list stars at the peak of their career powers.
Nicolas Cage had just won an Oscar in 1995 for his breakout performance in Leaving Las Vegas, following that up with two star-making turns in The Rock and Con Air, making the idiosyncratic actor an unlikely action movie star. John Travolta, meanwhile, was enjoying a career renaissance, buoyed by films like Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty. He had worked with director John Woo on the helmer’s previous English language actioner, Broken Arrow, but the pair would hit new heights here.

After appearing in Adam McKay’s satirical comedy “Don’t Look Up” and Guillermo del Toro’s psychological thriller “Nightmare Alley,” Cate Blanchett could make history at the Screen Actors Guild Awards should either movie receive a bid for film ensemble come Wednesday. It would break her tie in the category with Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt of six nominations each. If both movies receive ensemble nominations, however, Blanchett will also become the 19th person in SAG Awards history to snag double nominations in the same year, and the fourth person to do it in the last three years.

Get ready to once again be hypnotized by John Lurie’s soothing way of working with watercolors, because HBO has renewed “Painting With John” for a second season, the pay TV channel said Tuesday.
Per the official description for the unscripted series, which premiered in January: Season one of “Painting With John” featured musician, actor, director and painter John Lurie ensconced at his worktable, honing his intricate watercolor techniques and sharing reflections on what he’s learned about life. Combining images of Lurie’s paintings, original music and irreverent point of view on tapping into your childlike artist side, his overall ambivalence toward fame, and more, the series serves as a reminder to prioritize a little time every day for creativity, fun and a bit of mischief.
“There’s something so hypnotic and captivating about John’s style,” Nina Rosenstein, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said in a statement accompanying the renewal news.

Delroy Lindo has been cast in a lead role of the upcoming Amazon series adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novel “Anansi Boys,” Variety has learned.

But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting but making it a lot more dangerous.
Lindo will star as Anansi/Mr. Nancy. The character is described as all charm. As far as Charlie knows, his father was a lazy man who cheated on Charlie’s mother. But Mr Nancy had another side to him. He was a god of stories and trickery after all.

In the summer of 1992, “Lethal Weapon 3” was dominating the box office, but audiences didn’t leave the theater talking about the outrageous stunts or Mel Gibson and Danny Glover’s buddy act. Rather, it was Rene Russo, a model-turned actress with a few minor roles in films like “Major League,” who stole the movie right out from under her A-list co-stars. Her turn as Sergeant Lorna Cole, a tough-talking internal affairs agent, fully capable of dodging bullets and kicking the crap out of the bad guys, was a breath of fresh air at a time when action movies were male-dominated affairs.
Russo, who’d go on to star in notable hits like “In the Line of Fire” and “Get Shorty” over the ensuing decade, credits director Richard Donner with taking a chance on the acting newcomer, whose resume initially made him hesitant to give her the gig. Donner died...

“Power Book IV: Force,” the Starz franchise’s third spinoff led by Joseph Sikora, has just lost its showrunner as well as executive producer and creator, Robert Munic. Sikora returns to the “Power” universe to reprise the iconic and beloved role of the tritagonist-turned-antagonist. In “Power Book IV: Force,” the fan-favorite character will be the primary focus as he cuts ties and puts New York in his rearview mirror for good.
Per sources that spoke with Deadline, Munic exited the show over “creative differences,” but the departure was amicable and is not expected to impact production.
Along with Sikora, Kris D. Lofton (“Ballers”) and Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, rapper, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jeremih, “Power Book IV” will also star as Elijah and Jenard Sampson, respectively. Other castings previously announced in February include Isaac Keys (“Get Shorty”), Lili Simmons (“Ray Donovan”), Gabrielle Ryan (“The Have and Have Nots”), Shane Harper Anthony Fleming...

Editor’s note: This story has been updated with a quote from Bond producers Eon Productions about their commitment to theatrical releases for future 007 installments.
Amazon and MGM have struck a $8.45 billion deal for the e-commerce giant to acquire the storied studio behind James Bond. MGM’s enormous library and underutilized franchises will be major assets for Amazon’s streaming efforts: While Amazon has virtually unlimited money to spend on film, TV, and music (last year’s content budget: $11 billion), it doesn’t have a century’s worth of content.
With streamers dominating the industry in a post-pandemic land grab for subscribers, the MGM deal means Amazon has a clearer path to the industry’s number-three spot, after Netflix and Disney. This deal gives Amazon a major leg up on another deep-pocketed tech company, Apple, which planned to spend $17 billion on content last year but has no library to speak of.

Amazon is weeks into negotiations on a deal to acquire MGM for about $9 billion, industry sources tell Variety.
Chatter that Amazon (and other tech and media giants) have been sniffing around MGM has circulated for some time. But sources indicated that Amazon’s interest in acquiring the studio has taken on a new tenor beyond the usual rumor mill. The deal is said to be being orchestrated by Mike Hopkins, senior VP of Amazon Studios and Prime Video, directly with MGM board chairman Kevin Ulrich, whose Anchorage Capital is a major MGM shareholder.
Reps for Amazon and MGM declined to comment.
MGM had already effectively nailed up a “for sale” sign: Variety confirmed in December that the company was looking for a buyer.

Lori throwing up at his feet wasn’t quite the answer Doug expected when he popped the question at the start of “We Broke Up.” Then again, Doug calling it quits on the heels of that reaction wasn’t exactly what Lori imagined either. After all, the pair have been together for 10 good years. Luckily, audiences are in for more pleasant surprises.
In this charming outing — starring Aya Cash as Lori and William Jackson Harper as Doug — each is legitimately aggrieved by the swift turn of events in their relationship. They went from a cruise-controlled 60 to zero so quickly that the film will later revisit (in a cleverly edited montage) what precisely happened.
They are also utterly flummoxed about the rules of disengagement. Although one might hazard that atop that list would be the dictum, “Do not go with your freshly minted ex to a wedding.” But go they do...

Although the late Chadwick Boseman did not attract much awards attention during his brief film career, his final performances in “Da 5 Bloods” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” have now brought him plenty. He is now the second man (after Jamie Foxx in 2005) to receive double SAG nominations for individual film roles. By garnering ensemble bids for both films, he has also set a record for most SAG nominations for film in a single year.
In the supporting actor category, Boseman faces off against Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”), and Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”). All are new to the category except Leto, who brought home the award for “Dallas Buyers Club” in 2014. After nearly a decade as head of scripted television for MGM, Steve Stark is leaving the studio’s executive ranks. The news comes a year after MGM’s Worldwide Television Group, run by Chairman Mark Burnett, last extended Stark with a new contract in conjunction with him being named President of a new label, MGM/UA Television.
“MGM has confirmed President of MGM/UA Television Steve Stark will be exiting his role,” the company said in a statement to Deadline. “The studio plans to announcing more details in the coming days.”
Stark is returning to producing, transitioning to an exclusive production deal with MGM/UA Television.
Over the past nine and a half years, Stark, a respected and well-liked executive, grew MGM’s scripted footprint with the award-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo, as well as Vikings, Get Shorty, Condor, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Perpetual Grace Ltd, among others.

Steve Stark, MGM TV Executive Who Championed ‘Handmaid’s Tale,’ Exits for Producing Deal (Exclusive)
Longtime MGM Television executive Steve Stark, who championed the studio’s Emmy-winning drama “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is leaving his executive post and transitioning to a producing deal with the studio.
Just over a year ago, Stark was named president of the newly formed MGM/UA Television label and extended his deal with the studio. He had previously served as MGM’s head of scripted television production and development, overseeing all scripted content from concept to production and leading development of new projects. Stark’s segue to a producing role at a time of massive transition for the content business — and persistent sale rumors around MGM — is no surprise. It’s said to have been under discussion for some time.

I started writing these words on Jan. 20, 2021, a day of historical firsts: Kamala Harris was the first African American woman to be sworn in as Vice President of the United States of America.
One of the first orders of business for VP Harris, also of South Asian descent (another first) was to swear in the state of Georgia’s first African American and Jewish senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively; giving Georgia two Democratic Senators for the first time since 1992. Finally, VP Harris swore in California’s first Latino senator, Alex Padilla.
Senator Warnock, speaking about the personal significance of the day for him (it would have been his father’s 104th birthday), spoke of a “Covenant we share as Americans.”
That word, covenant, resonated very strongly with me. Why? As a noun, a covenant is “an agreement; contract; compact; or a protocol,” for example. As a verb, a “vow or pledge.

When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

Each of the new show’s six episodes will feature the artist, musician and actor painting watercolors and reflecting on life. Adam McKay and Todd Schulman of Hyperobject Industries will serve as executive producers. The series is photographed and edited by Erik Mockus.
Lurie had previously teased that he was working on a new TV project, writing on Twitter last year, “We have started shooting Painting With John. Whenever the painting or talking is going poorly, I say – Let’s go outside and shoot another elephant shot. So we do -“

Director Steven Soderbergh and producers Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins will produce the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021, the Academy announced on Tuesday.
The announcement did not specify whether the show would be in-person or virtual, a decision that will not be made until the course of the Covid-19 pandemic is clearer.
While Collins is a television producer with a long history of producing live awards shows like the Grammys, BET Awards and Soul Train Awards and Sher is a veteran producer with Oscar nominations for “Django Unchained” and “Erin Brockovich,” the presence of Soderbergh on the producing team is a surprise and something of a coup for Academy president David Rubin.
Soderbergh, who won the Best Director Oscar for “Traffic” in 2000, is an adventurous and iconoclastic film and television director whose work includes “sex, lies and videotape,” “Contagion,” “Out of Sight,” the “Oceans” movies, “Magic Mike” and the recent...

The Academy has chosen three first-time Oscar producers for the delayed 2021 show: Emmy-nominated Grammy Show producer Jesse Collins will team with filmmakers Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh, who worked together on Oscar-winner “Erin Brockovich,” to produce the 93rd Oscars which, due to the pandemic will air live on ABC and around the world on Sunday, April 25, two months later than usual.
There has been some debate about what form the Oscar show will take, whether in-person or in hybrid form like the Emmys. Clearly, the Academy will do what it takes to keep participants safe. Directing Oscar winner Soderbergh (“Traffic”) has earned recent praise, not only for his filmmaking, but for leading the taskforce at the Directors Guild of America that has set Covid safety guidelines for the industry.
