Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures wanted to move quickly on Scream 7… then the version of the film they wanted to move quickly on crumbled piece by piece. Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are finishing work on their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter), so with returning writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick working on the script, the companies hired Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon to direct the film and started reaching out to actors. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara Carpenter… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from...

These days, most audiences are aware that the law of diminishing returns also applies to movie franchises. That’s why numbered sequels are usually frowned upon when it comes to new releases in established IPs, with producers preferring it when moviegoers forget exactly how many of these rehashed films they’ve seen before. And as a series goes on, it becomes increasingly more difficult for franchises to experiment with their source material, leading to stale experiences and disappointed fans.
Thankfully, there are a handful of exceptions to this rule, and I’d argue that the most surprising of all would be the Universal Soldier franchise. In all honesty, I don’t even think the original 1992 film is all that great, benefiting from the natural charisma of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren while riding on the coat-tails of an intriguing premise (where deceased soldiers are revived as cybernetic zombies with...

Let’s be honest, it’s a weird time out there in the world of streaming movies. As the major streamers continue to mess around with their apps and libraries, adding ad-tiers or changing their names to nonsense words that have nothing to do with the brand, they’re also charging more for less. As Netflix, Max, and Amazon Prime decrease in value, free streaming services become a better deal.
But just because you’re not shelling out any cash doesn’t mean that you want a terrible experience. If you know where to look, you can find hundreds of movies available online, completely for free. And no, I’m not referring to those sketchy sites you used to visit in college. I’m talking about services that let you watch full-length movies completely for free. Sure, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get the movies, but...

1988’s Maniac Cop isn’t exactly what you’d call a horror classic, but you can’t deny that there’s a certain something about its grungy grindhouse charms that just pulls you in. Over the past few decades, it’s gradually found itself becoming a cult classic (having Bruce Campbell in it probably also helps) and now, proving once again that a good horror property can never stay dormant for too long, Deadline is reporting that Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn is adapting the film for television for a new series to air on HBO.
The 1988 original followed an undead cop who roams the streets of New York City killing those who look to him for help. As for this new take, it’ll be an event series that’ll follow much the same path story-wise and has been described by those in charge of it as “an unadulterated,...

1988’s Maniac Cop is pretty damn far from a horror classic, but all the same there’s a certain something about its grungy grindhouse charms. It was the perfect kind of movie to perpetually haunt the horror shelves of VHS rental shops, and as such has gradually gained a reputation as a cult classic (having Bruce Campbell in it probably also helps). Anyhow, proving that a good horror property can never stay dead for long, there’s been persistent talk of a reboot or remake of the film, to be produced by Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn.

Universal Soldier is a rare movie franchise that actually got better in its later sequels. The original and its follow-up The Return are basically okay schlock, but 2009’s Regeneration was a weirdly great film (and Van Damme was brilliant in it) and Day of Reckoning wasn’t half bad, either.
Perhaps buoyed up by the latter two films’ success, screenwriter Richard Wenk has revealed in an interview that he’s now working on a “re-imagining” of the franchise. Wenk, who wrote The Equalizer, explains that his script features a sole soldier rather than the pair seen in the original movies and is eager to stress that this is not a remake, saying:
“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called ‘Universal Soldier...

The Game of Life, sometimes known just as ‘Life,’ probably drums up mixed feelings when it comes to your memories. While it isn’t necessarily the first game to come to mind on game night, we’re willing to bet that some of you will rejoice at the mention with cherished memories of becoming a millionaire with a few lucky breaks, while others will know all too well the pain of hitting every potential loss along the way and barely having enough to retire. Whatever your memories, we’re willing to bet that fans – or otherwise – of the original game certainly won’t recognise it today! From changing adaptations over the years, to the integration with our much loved consoles, we’re taking a walk down memory lane (and hoping we can win a few million along the way!) and taking a look at the evolutions of this game.

As action comedy thriller Jean-Claude Van Johnson arrives on Amazon Prime Video, Matt looks at the history of action movie star satire...
In the new Amazon series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, action star Jean-Claude Van Damme attempts to relaunch his career by playing a fictionalised version of himself. In the show, Jean-Claude goes to Bulgaria to star in a movie which has been set-up to allow him to undertake covert missions for the agency as his alter-ego name Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

This might all seem a bit familiar, for a couple of reasons. Of course, it’s not the first time that hyper-flexible jaw-punter Van Damme has relaunched his career by playing a fictionalised version of himself. 2008's excellent Jcvd, where he plays a down-on-his-luck version of himself who...
