There’s a moment in The Beach Boys, the new documentary about the pioneers of California pop music streaming now on Disney+, in which rock historian and USC professor Josh Kun raises a question that has haunted the band throughout the bulk of its career: “Who are we as artists?”
In the beginning, the core Beach Boys — brothers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine — were a vocal group selling a fantasy about Southern California culture, one where the sun always shined, the girls all wore bikinis,...

When Netflix revealed that it was planning to come forth with an adaptation of DC Comics’ The Sandman, people were excited. While many were elated, there were some who had doubts about the project. But the series, which aired in 2022, proved them all wrong. It was a critical success, managing to bring to life a host of the fabled Endless on screen. And the new season will witness the introduction of 3 new members of the Endless.

Created by Neil Gaiman, the Endless are considered one of the oldest entities in DC Comics, predating even fairies, gods, and other supernatural entities. With each Endless being in-charge of a specific domain, and with each having sovereignty in their domain, they are characters who can hold their own.

Dreamers awaken! The Sandman saga is back in production, preparing to bring new phantasmagorical episodes — conjured from Neil Gaiman’s iconic graphic novel, which debuted 35 years ago today — to the screen. And it’s finally time to find out who has been cast as Endless family members Destiny, Delirium, and The Prodigal.
“This week we officially restart production on the next sequence of stories of The Sandman for Netflix,”wrote Gaiman in a letter to fans in November 2023.“Genius showrunner Allan Heinberg and the countless people in front of and behind the camera are building something endlessly special, and bringing these stories to life in a way that would once have been unimaginable.”
When we last wandered into the dream world, the magnificently coiffed realm-lord Morpheus aka Dream (Tom Sturridge) and his cadre of companions faced down an impending onslaught of Lucifer’s (Gwendoline Christie) hell-spawned legions. Now, the Endless...

Neil Gaiman’s amazing graphic novel series, The Sandman, gained a ton of fans since its debut back in the late 1980s, and they have been itching for the day they might see it brought to life on screen for many years. After some time, Netflix has finally blessed us with an update on the series, as a teaser has been released by the streaming service, confirming new cast members and revealing that the series is “coming soon” to the platform!

After spending decades in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic book series The Sandman actually made it into production and was released into the world as a Netflix series in August of 2022. (Read our review Here.) Season 2 of the show went into production last year, then had to be put on pause for a while due to the writers and actors strikes. Thankfully, The Sandman season 2 was able to resume production as soon as those strikes came to an end – and today, a press release reveals that the cast of the new batch of episodes includes Esmé Creed-Miles (Hanna) as Delirium, Adrian Lester (Hustle) as Destiny, and Barry Sloane (Pleasureland) as The Prodigal. Their characters can be seen in this promo clip:
The Endless have finally assembled: Introducing Adrian Lester as Destiny, Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium and Barry Sloane as the Prodigal in the next season of The Sandman.

For us The Sandman fans who yearned for a second season of Neil Gaiman's most enigmatic TV project, Dead Boy Detectives was a life-saver. The new Netflix show that follows the adventures of two ghosts who prefer solving supernatural mysteries to enjoying their afterlife is a fantastic addition to the already rich universe of The Sandman.
The spinoff somehow manages to be very similar and very different to its parent show at the same time. Despite the shared universe and the general The Sandman-esque vibe, Dead Boy Detectives is much more light-hearted and, if we may, fun.
Still, it was a real treat for fans to go full "meme Dicaprio" mode when they saw literally anything — or anyone — directly from The Sandman. The first Endless cameo awaited us right in the first episode, when Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death arrived to collect a soul and Charles and Edwin had...

Interviewing Vegyn isn’t easy. After three months of back-and-forth, I’m finally given a time to meet him on a gray day in early March at a coffee spot in east London. I’ve been eager to make this happen. Vegyn’s career is one of the most impressive in modern music, distinguished by collaboration, style, and a fair amount of mystery.
What, for instance, is his relationship with Frank Ocean, for whom Vegyn produced songs on both Blonde and Endless? What is it like working with Travis Scott,...

Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again has rounded out its revamped creative team with a new showrunner and directors. Dario Scardapane has been tapped as showrunner and directing team Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Loki) are set to direct the Charlie Cox series, sources confirm to Deadline.
The series has been revamping its creative team after determining the show wasn’t working as is. Head scribes Chris Ord and Matt Corman and episodic directors were let go, but remain EPs on the two-season series. Daredevil, which first aired on Netflix, follows Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind attorney turned crimefighting superhero.
Less than half of the series’ 18 episodes were shot. Marvel plans to keep some footage though the series will pivot from being a procedural show to having a more serialized focus. Scardapone will write the new episodes, incorporating what was already shot, we’re told.

Diablo 4‘s Season 2 update is a real game changer that impacts nearly every aspect of the experience in some way. However, some of the updates’ most important changes focus on the game’s roster of Nightmare Dungeons.
In short, Nightmare Dungeons are easier to navigate, filled with more enemies, and yield greater Xp rewards. It’s a global buff to the entire process of running dungeons. In the grand tradition of such updates, though, it turns out that some dungeons are still generally more effective than others.

During the late 1950s, DC Comics struck gold with the release of a number of horror titles, notably House of Mystery and House of Horror. Both of these have since gained cult classic status thanks to the legendary creative teams spinning chilling narratives around beautiful blood-curling macabre panels—very in sync with the classic Hammer and Grindhouse horror movies. In later years, with restrictions imposed by the Cca (Comics Code Authority), the element of horror gradually waned in mainstream comics. It made a sporadic resurgence during the Bronze Age of comics during the late 1970s, and using their Vertigo imprint titles, DC managed to keep the dread alive, especially through The Hellblazer and Sandman titles. Therefore, in the post-Rebirth era, DC Comics’ creative team’s perceivable interest in rejuvenating the horror themes in even mainstream series like Detective Comics and DCeased must have elated horror fans like myself.

Fontaines D.C. have released their cover of Nick Drake’s cherished “‘Cello Song.” The recording serves as first single off of a forthcoming tribute project, The Endless Coloured Ways – The Songs of Nick Drake, out on July 7th via Chrysalis Records.
Adopting a different approach than Drake’s original (first released on 1969’s Five Leaves Left), Fontaines switch out the bustling acoustics and the titular cello for a driving backbeat, a soundscape of guitars, and a haunting melody that, all combined, use Drake’s same spark to light a whole new flame. Hearing vocalist Grian Chatten croon the final verse, “So forget this cruel world/ Where I belong/ I’ll just sit and wait/ And sing my song,” it makes one reflect on how Drake would feel if he could see the impact he’s made on so many artists since his tragic death in 1974. Now that "The Sandman" has dropped its excellent bonus episode, fans are anxiously awaiting news of the show being picked up for a second season. Netflix has yet to make a decision unfortunately, but that hasn't stopped creator Neil Gaiman and showrunner Allan Heinberg from plotting season 2 and beyond. Both previously touched on which comic arcs they were most excited to tackle and Heinberg's in particular, were further down the line than even season 2 would likely get.
"The Sandman" bonus episode, which adapted "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope," introduces the titular Muse, but also reveals that not only were Dream (Tom Sturridge) and Calliope (Melissanthi Mahut) once married, but they also had a son together. Not much is said, though we know some tragedy befell him, resulting in a terrible falling out between his parents. The episode makes some incredibly smart changes, especially to Calliope's story, that really make this adaption sing.

The world premiere of hotly anticipated Netflix series “The Sandman” at London’s BFI Southbank on Wednesday evening was a star-studded triumph, with Neil Gaiman and cast greeted with cheers and adulation.
Apart from Gaiman, on whose iconic comics the series is based, the cast and crew, Netflix and Warner Bros. Television executives, the audience was largely composed of comic book aficionados who evidently were familiar with the nuances of every single one of the 75 comics in the series.
The first two episodes of the show were screened to a rapt audience, and Gaiman kicked off the post-screening Q&a by describing how he had spent well over 30 years “fighting terrible film adaptations” of his comics. And, after Netflix boarded the project, “suddenly, in 2019, it was the opposite,” Gaiman said. “It was like, okay, now we can do it. Now we don’t have to try and squeeze 3,000 pages of story into two hours of film.

Talk about a sub-sub-genre that won’t die. Less than two years after the soulless vapidity of Scott Speer’s “Endless”, death-obsessed Gen Z-ers are again gifted with, well, a slightly less soulless and vapid “Ghost” ripoff in the form of Arie Posin’s “The In Between.” Bolstered by the charms of Joey King — fresh off her Netflix trilogy “The Kissing Booth,” sealing her as one of our most formidable streaming romance stars —
The primary issue: “The In Between” seems stuck in between (sorry) two very different stories. There’s the sweet, chemistry-fizzing romance between budding orphan photographer Tessa (King) and trilingual championship rower Skylar who meet cute at a screening of “Betty Blue” at their local arthouse (kids these days!) and then try to make a go of it, and what happens after a summer together — cut short when a car accident kills Skylar. Posin flips back and forth...

Baltimore rock outfit Turnstile have released a new song, “Alien Love Call,” featuring Blood Orange. The track will appear on the group’s new album, Glow On, out August 27th via Roadrunner Records.
“Alien Love Call” finds Turnstile embracing a far softer, R&b-tinged sound as dreamy guitars and lush vocal harmonies shimmer over the steady rhythm section. Frontman Brendan Yates gets an assist from Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes on the vocals.

Exclusive: Sarah Desjardins (Riverdale), Kevin Alves (Locke & Key) and Alexa Barajas (The Flash) are set for recurring roles in Showtime’s drama series Yellowjackets. Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress star in the drama series from writers Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Entertainment One and studio-based producer Drew Comins. Production has begun in Vancouver, Canada for a 2021 debut on the network.
Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

Nicholas Hamilton has accomplished more than most at the age of 21 but there remains one ambition he is yet to fulfil.
The actor and musician, who spent his teens starring in titles such as It, The Dark Tower, and Danger Close, returned to his Northern Nsw hometown of Alstonville last month after two and a half years in LA, and has his sights set on a nearby cultural hotspot.
“I’m excited about the prospect of being a Byron Bay musician,” he tells If.
“I started writing music just before I went to LA and never got the chance to be that Byron busking and gigging musician which, in a weird way, I’m really excited about.”
Hamilton’s time away proved to be productive, even with last year’s pandemic disruption.
He will next be seen in Scott Speer’s romantic drama Endless, which will be available across global and local digital platforms,...

Jessie Ware has announced an expanded edition of her acclaimed 2020 album What’s Your Pleasure? and with it a new summer-ready single titled “Please.”
“I had such an amazing response to the What’s Your Pleasure? record that I didn’t want the lights to go up and the party to be over just yet,” Ware said in a statement. “‘Please’ is full of optimism and ready to be played in a place where we can all be together and flirt, dance, touch, and kiss. A wonderful excuse not to stop the party from ending.

This article contains Synchronic spoilers.
“Time is the school in which we learn / Time is the fire in which we burn,” wrote poet Delmore Schwartz decades ago, and if any genre filmmakers take that couplet to heart, it’s Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. The self-contained directing/writing/producing/acting pair have made four feature films to date, each of them dealing in some way with the passage of time, the volatility of memory, and the warping of both.
Their fourth feature, last year’s Synchronic—which makes its Netflix debut this week—is the duo’s most mature, fully developed, and coherent film yet, while also their most polished and accessible in a mainstream sense. It continues the filmmakers’ exploration of the themes they’ve touched on before, but adds a new dimension in terms of the way the story’s main character responds to the choices placed in...

Exclusive: Quiver Distribution has landed U.S. rights to Falling, the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Viggo Mortensen that had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A theatrical, digital and on-demand release is set for February 5.
Mortensen penned the script, composed the score, produced and stars alongside Laura Linney and Lance Henriksen in the semi-autographical drama. Mortensen plays John, who lives with his partner and their daughter in California, far from the traditional rural life he left behind years ago. John’s father, Willis (Henriksen), a headstrong man from a bygone era, lives alone on the isolated farm where John grew up but is in the early stages of dementia. John brings him to stay at his California home so that he and his sister (Linney) might help him find a place near them to relocate to. As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as the various streaming services are stocking their libraries with some great new titles this December to keep us going through the festive period. When it comes to Hulu, the Disney-owned platform is adding a few holiday-related movies and TV shows, but is mostly taking the track of stuffing itself full of classic films that the whole family can enjoy.
This includes a bunch of the best James Bond pics ever made, like GoldenEye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and, the one that kicked it all off, Dr. No. That would be a perfect watch to honor Sean Connery, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Other action movies you might want to check out this December, meanwhile, include The Hurt Locker, The Fifth Element, 2003’s Hulk and the two “Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon” flicks, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

With theaters open in 44 of the 50 states, cinemas are finding something to show — although turnout is still so modest that distributors are still being hesitant about what to release. That means another week in what’s now going on five months of the industry’s pivot to streaming releases, with a fresh batch of respectable lower-profile offerings.
Netflix continues to lead the pack with options, releasing four new features (that we know of), including the superhero-esque movie “Project Power,” a sci-fi thriller about a drug that gives ordinary folks special abilities … for about five minutes. Young death is tricky business. To do it justice, a movie would have to be awash in grief — and where’s the pleasure in that? The supernatural romance “Endless,” releasing on demand, tempers its mourning with lessons about mortality delivered by a couple of guys stuck on the other side. It’s a cheat, to be sure. But when the screenplay could have easily marooned the audience in a copycat purgatory.
When boyfriend Chris (Hamilton) dies, Riley (Shipp) blames herself for the wreck that killed him. Chris had been the laid-back champion of Riley’s artistic ambitions. He saw and nurtured her most authentic self. Riley’s parents, both lawyers, had plotted a Type-a trajectory for their only child. A graduating senior headed to her parent’s alma mater and then onto law school, Riley found in Chris’ embrace room to breathe, to draw graphic novellas, to just be. And now he’s gone.
