Captain America star Chris Evans might be seen as the human equivalent of sunshine and puppy videos, but he recently signed on to play Dr. Jekyll, a guy with a serious dark side. Evans has taken on exceptionally flawed characters before, so the Lionsgate adaptation of the BBC series shouldn’t be too far a stretch for him. He will have to find a way to out-glower Russell Crowe, though, who’s set to play the Monsters Cinematic Universe version for Universal. And in that battle of McU vs. McU, Evans will be aided by Ruben Fleischer, who’s just been tapped to direct Jekyll.
The Zombieland director remains busy trying to get a sequel to his horror-comedy off the ground, though that could prove a lot trickier now that he, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Woody Harrelson are household names (in the case of the latter, again...

Bobcat Goldthwait is mixing and mashing up genres for TruTV, which just ordered hisgenre-hopping, scripted anthology comedy series “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Messed Up Stories.”
“Messed Up Stories” (still a working title) was announced Sunday during TruTV’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour. Created by Goldthwait, the series will produce a total of eight episodes. Each edition will tell a different story in a different genre – including 1970s-era science fiction, psychological thriller, romantic comedy and reality – and will parody pop culture norms and exploit the awkwardness of its flawed characters.
“Folks often call my movies dark, but I don’t see them that way,” said Goldthwait. “To me, the rest of the world is just too g*ddamn light. ‘Messed Up Stories’ will examine accepted truths and hypocrisies of our culture and turn them inside out. Does love conquer all? Does fame and money buy you happiness? Not always.

The project is not to be confused with the upcoming Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde film in development as part of the shared Universal Monsters franchise, which takes a cue from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (of which Evans’ Cap is a central component) in creating a series of overlapping films about its best-known figures: Dracula, the Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster and yes, Dr. Jekyll, to be played by Russell Crowe.
