Kill or Be Killed

Who doesn't love these one-off episodes of Flash with Gorilla Grodd? We all know the show will never have the budget to pull off a full season of Grodd madness so I'm always going to cherish the episodes that we get of the sentient primate.

A mixture of Planet of the Apes and Indiana Jones, 'Attack on Gorilla City' was a nice first part of two. Hopefully it doesn't go the way the two part Earth-2 episode did last year with the second half being a huge letdown. And much like last year's trip, this episode has the benefit of being so drastically different from anything we've seen thus far on the show. With the budget of a CW superhero show, I came in with relatively low expectations for what Gorilla City may look like, but I wasn't disappointed. They tip toed around as much as possible by keeping Team Flash trapped in a cell for most of the episode and even using Grodd's telepathic abilities through Harry to keep the amount of CGI frames low. I still think the best Grodd CG was used last season, but I think creating an entire city deserves some recognition as well.

Meanwhile in Central City, Jesse & Wally reunited and had fun taking down criminals and speeding across the city as a new power couple. Scratch that, they actually spent the entirety of the night moping around STAR Labs because they haven't been able to progress their relationship. Not exactly the way I hoped these two would spend their time without Barry in charge. I understand Jesse doesn't have any reason to be in a good mood with her father being kept by a massive gorilla, but a few more smiles would have been nice. These two brought the best out of one another last season, but that wasn't the case tonight.

For now, the team believes saving Harry and keeping Grodd at Earth-2 would secure another news headline but if the after credits scene and title of the next episode are any indication, that's not to be. Hopefully next week's conclusion will be even better. But it'll sure as heck to be hard to beat that arena battle between Solovar (deep cut DC character) and Flash. On a side note, purely by hearing Julian's claims to save Caitlin from becoming Killer Frost will certainly mean his death by season's end. And yes, I do believe it will be at the hands of Caitlin herself.

+Fun change of pace

+Sentient Gorilla chaos

+Nice having Harry back

-Jesse & Wally's melodramatic material

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: Attack on Gorilla City
lbramson11 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When has Grodd ever disappointed? Team Flash are held prisoner, so Barry must defeat Solivar in a coliseum to be set free. Like I said, Grodd never disappoints, and this is the best Grodd episode so far, and it's a 2-parter. Yay! I always love those! This episode is not only visually impressive, but has a lot of fun fight scenes against Grodd's gorilla rival. It's nice to finally see Gorilla City after all this time! This is the first time where, at least in my opinion, the first part is better than the second. Not to say Attack on Central City is bad, just not as good as Gorilla City. I love this episode so much, it's a blast!

9/10-Great! 👍👍

billion dollar snow smile

Warning: Spoilers
Okay lets begin with, in totally love with caitlyn snow and her amazing acting, involve in the character and her billion dollar smile. Will continue watch this show for Snow, Harry and Cisco.

Now, one of the most confused and still not clear question is....Are they really re-writing the future or creating the future.

An amazing episode and return of grodd always one of the best episodes of flash. love the way julian and snow getting close, don't really want to see snow getting hurt again.

Happy to see both wells working and annoying each other and cisco in between both and nice sparkle between wally and jesse and iris is cute and sweet as always. really glad this season is interesting and much more fun in many ways. like HR but still miss Harry.

The Flash - S03E13 Attack on Gorilla City
j_forbesy21 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After a week off, I was so excited to be getting back to Flash. Considering the last 4 episodes of CW superhero shows I have watched has either been the dark and gritty Arrow or what I see as very subpar Supergirl, I was in a much needed dose of Flash. This episode, and next episode as well, brings together two of my favourite things in Flash, travelling between Earths and Grodd. Having only just finishing reading the Grodd arc in the New 52 Flash comic, my excitement is on a high to see what the TV show is going to do with Grodd and his gorilla army.

As I expected, I loved this episode. For me this was a perfect all round episode. I thought the writing, whether it was dialog or story, was on point. The CGI was outstanding for a show like Flash that is on the CW. I thought Grodd and Solovar looked amazing. The way the action sequences were directed looked fantastic, especially the slow mo stuff when Flash and Solovar first come together. When an episode is close to perfect, for me I find it had to write about because all I can do is name specifics about what I really liked, and considering this episode had a lot of action and a pretty simple story for the main arc of the episode, it's hard to go into detail and break down this episode.

That being said, I have to touch on something in detail that the Flash does really well that has been my pet hate about Supergirl recently, and that is relationships. Not counting Barry and Iris, which I think is a relationship that we saw built over time and form naturally, we had two other relationships in this episode. The first was Wally and Jesse, a relationship that we have been tested with for a while. What I really liked about how they handled this relationship compared to Supergirl is that there is a point to it. In this episode, through their interactions we got to see Jesse's perspective on how Wally has changed since getting his powers and how his love of speed become even stronger. We also ended with Jesse accepting Wally's invitation to come to Earth 1 for good. This isn't some Supergirl or Arrow season 4 stuff where their relationship feels rushed and his just suddenly asking her to move in, but this is a key story point in the great season. We are getting Jesse Quick on Earth 1. Whether or not she stays for a long time or not, it's going to be great to have her around more and what is so great about it is how it happened. They could of written a million reasons as to why she is moving over, but the fact that they wrote it into their relationship, it gives Wally and Jesse's relationship a purpose rather than some drama.

The second relationship we have is Caitlyn and Julian. While out of all of them, this is perhaps the more teen drama, Supergirl like, I put how this relationship is forming up there with Maggie and Alex. This relationship feels natural in the show and what gives it the natural feeling is the character moments from Caitlyn. Regardless of if this relationship works or not, we are getting an insight as to how scared she is of her powers and how because of that she doesn't want to get close to anyone. Where as in Supergirl, I felt like the reason Kara and Mon-El were doing the will they/won't they situation that Caitlyn and Julian are currently in, is because the show needed to have a reason for drama.

Overall, a fantastic episode yet again from Flash. This show knows how to do their big events right and they have kicked of the start of this two episode gorilla arc perfectly. By the looks of it we are going it get more Gypsy next week, on top of more Jesse Quick and Earth 2 Wells, which is my favourite of all the Wells we have seen. From expectations, I think we are in for a blockbuster next week, however if it's anything like this week's episode, it's a home run.

This episode is rated the lowest!

Warning: Spoilers
These episodes remind me of Season's 2 - "Welcome to Earth 2" and "Escape from Earth 2" It was the needed exposition for the new world in which we're introduced in which is Earth II. I rated both episodes 10/10. Season 3 was a spent forced addition and couldn't match Grodd what ZOOM was so threatening, though he looked cool in the armor!

I must add, there was one line that Barry Allen said in this episode that always believe in hope and Iris asking Barry how he remains positive. These lines are in fact memorable.

The dramatic and pensive tunes were also good. What I didn't like was the generic production design of Gorilla city, The arena didn't see realistic. Barry still not fast enough to pluck all those darts out of the air, despite being the fastest man alive. Gypsy is mind-controlled but NOT Cisco was just given a demo! Why?

Instead of "ROAWR!" the ep is a flaccid *thud*
imakk200121 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Only 10 minutes in and already so many recycled dialogue/themes and doomed Iris reminders. But what a perfect segue to the rest of the ep:

  • teen soap opera with actual teens will never not be clunky

  • trudging through the jungle instead of Barry scoping out the entire jungle

  • Barry not fast enough to pluck all those darts out of the air

  • Wally's claim of completeness with Jesse whom he hasn't given 1 thought about since she left

  • Wally/Jesse standing around while spectators applaud (who thinks this looks good on ANYONE?!)

  • Barry literally couldn't think for himself in the arena, as usual that was team flash doing all the thinking

  • Barry dead enough to fool Grodd but not so dead he couldn't hear Harry

  • Grodd's plan/the fight/escape plan were the appropriately clunky, holes-riddled hearts of a clunky ep

  • too much HR/yet another Cavanagh impression

  • all that running of the mouth from Barry (seriously?!?!)

  • mind-controlling Gypsy but NOT Cisco

  • If Caitlin/Julian's matching outfits weren't a screaming sign of Doomed Romance, I don't know what is.

  • Iris getting the flash signal still begs the same question: why?

Bright spots:

+ Bludhaven

+ all Julian scenes

+ Grodd looked hella cool in armor

Confession: haven't watched Flash live since mid-season. This ep reminds me why I did that.

Score: 5

Gorilla City
cobi-8062022 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I wonder how much this cost them to make compared to regular episodes like the three previous ones, must be at least twice as expensive as one of those. Was it worth it? I certainly think it was.

The VFX was fantastic compared to the last two Grodd episodes where Grodd mostly appeared during nighttime or it was otherwise dark in the room. Obviously they had to up the spectacle being that we were not only getting Grodd but the entirety of Gorilla City in this episode. I like that they didn't decide to change the look of the city from the time we saw it at the end of "Gorilla Warfare" last season, continuity is appreciated. Instead they took us closer and showed us more of the inside of it. When they gave us that overview of the city with gorillas walking everywhere I got a big smile on my face. Never did I imagine when we were first introduced to Grodd that this was going to be happening barely two years later. We went from sewers to this within just three seasons, that's pretty crazy. It took them 4-5 seasons to bring out the Fortress of Solitude on Smallville. Anyway, the VFX department has done a very good job. The city, the gorillas and the arena fight were all fantastic and there's going to be more Gorilla-action in next week's episode. Honestly, never thought I'd see Grodd wearing armour but I was sort of hoping for it one day, glad that day has come and he looks great wearing it. Barry's speedpunches does nothing on his bare muscles so I don't know how he is going to stop a Grodd who now has armour. I hope they'll get some help from Solovar to fight Grodd and we see the two gorillas fight each other because that would be awesome!

Grodd's plan was understandable although not entirely flawless. He does well in tricking Team Flash to think that Solovar is evil by making them feel sympathy for Grodd because they sent him there and now he's not being treated well. Of course this is just so he could be backstabbing Team Flash later on, assume control and commence his attack on Earth-1 Central City. It's not the best plan but given that Grodd has a back-up plan in the end I get the impression that the writers wanted us to notice how Grodd has become smarter since we last saw him. Poor Gypsy, how did you end up in this situation? Please explain that to me in the next episode.

Jesse and Wally scenes were okay. When the episode is set to give us basically "Welcome to Gorilla City" the scenes where we are not in Gorilla City will feel unnecessary and that was no different here than it was during the Earth-2 visit last year. H.R. was fun in this episode so he pretty much saved all the Earth-1 scenes, especially when they returned from Earth-2.

This is a two-parter story so this was only half of the story. Will the second half be as great as the first half? I hope it will, I can't see how it wouldn't be. Armoured gorillas causing mayhem in the city? How can this not sound cool to anyone following this show.

All in all, this episode was great, the VFX excellent, Grodd is growing to be a fearsome adversary (too bad we can't have a full season of him) and he's coming back next week to lay waste to Central City!

and the bar keeps getting lower

SPOILERS AHEAD

honestly...what can be said about this show that hasn't been said already 100 times...god awful AWFUL writing, mind numbingly cheesy lines, the acting has gone from OK to why am i still watching this and like always INCONSISTENCY the flash never seems to fail at being inconsistent within its own rules i mean honestly when u see a guy who is supposed to be so fast that u cant even see him goes in charging head on a gorilla and they seemed to be going at about the same speed i know its not the first time this happens but that just makes it worse they should change its label from "action, adventure, drama" to "fantasy and not a very good one at that" i could go on but this show is definitely not worth it
