March 2024 is a month of movie empires, as "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" lands in theaters just one week ahead of "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." With early box office numbers in, the latest "Ghostbusters" sequel is looking like more of a North Sea Empire than a Roman Empire, with a $16 million opening day and a projected opening weekend total of around $42 million, according to The Wrap. 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" grossed $16.6 million on its opening day and rounded out the weekend with $44 million, so the two movies are performing almost identically.
With a $75 million production budget and a worldwide box office total of $204.3 million, "Afterlife" was considered a modest success, especially given the extenuating circumstances of movie theaters still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" was given a bigger price tag of $100 million to accommodate a larger ensemble cast, a return to New York City, and substantial visual effects,...

R L Stine’s Goosebumps has been renewed for a second series at Disney+, with a change in format to an anthology show.
R L Stine’s Goosebumps is one of the bestselling book series in history. It is no surprise that it has had myriad screen adaptations over the years.
Perhaps the most fondly remembered is the 1990s television series, which had memorable opening titles in which the shadow of the G in Goosebumps made it’s way through an eerie town while the unsettling theme tune played over it.
Many of the original novels were adapted, and it marked a high point for television horror aimed at young adults, as it was broadcast around the same time as Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, a horror anthology aimed at older teenagers. Several of Stine’s works have made it to the screen, from a trilogy of Fear Street...

American Born Chinese actor Ben Wang needs to start practicing his crane kicks because he’s the star of Sony’s new Karate Kid. Wang’s casting comes after a global search for the right actor. Wang beat thousands of competitors for the role, with 10,000 entries reported in 24 hours. The anticipated film finds Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles from previous chapters of the Karate Kid franchise.
To say Wang’s audition was impressive would be an understatement. Not only did he display a profound understanding of the character, but he’s also fluent in Mandarin and trained in multiple martial arts forms. His arsenal of skills includes karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, Kempo, and taekwondo training.
Details about the plot remain a mystery, though we hear Sony will move the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds identity and strength in martial arts.

R.L. Stine, the author of Goosebumps, has made cameo appearances in several live-action adaptations of his books. His weakest cameo was in Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, where he played the school's principal and had little recognition of his true identity. His best cameo was in the 2023 Goosebumps reboot, where he appeared as a podcast host, celebrating his literary legacy in a fitting and non-obtrusive way.
Goosebumps author R.L. Stine has made a cameo appearance in several live-action adaptations of his books. Stine has written hundreds of horror novels over the years, and he is often referred to as the "Stephen King of children's literature." He has made various cameo appearances in movies and television series based on his books, some of which worked better than others.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Goosebumps episodes 1-5!
The Goosebumps reboot series references various classic horror movies and TV shows, such as Kill Bill, Batman, and Thor in episode 1. There is a nod to Back to the Future in episode 3 when Isaiah laughingly references time travel, and later, James' clone mimics Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. In episode 4, Lucas eating worms is reminiscent of a scene from Drag Me To Hell, and the worm monster resembles the Mind Flayer from Stranger Things.
While 2023’s Goosebumps reboot features a lot of nods to Rl Stine’s popular horror novel series, the show also finds time to reference a handful of other classic movies and shows in its first five episodes. Goosebumps has been through many incarnations over the years. The franchise started as Rl Stine’s popular series of children’s horror novels, then spawned a ‘90s anthology series. After that,...

“Kensday” may soon be everyday. “Community” star and “The Masked Singer” panelist Ken Jeong is eyeing a daytime talk strip for 2024, to be developed and produced by Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury shingle. Jeong will executive produce with Jim Biederman (“The Kids in the Hall,” “The Howard Stern Radio Show.”
“Ken is one of a handful of people in the world who has what it takes to succeed as a talk show host and we are excited to be in business with him,” Debmar-Mercury co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said in a joint statement. “”Audiences connect with Ken on many levels – not only because is he so talented, entertaining and unapologetically hilarious but their sense that he is sincere, compassionate, fearless, friendly, just genuinely nice – all essential ingredients that make for long-term success as a talk show host. The 2023 Goosebumps reboot is not intended for a younger audience, signaling a departure from previous installments aimed at children. The show is rated TV-pg and contains violence, scary moments, adult themes, and references to extramarital affairs and sexual innuendos. The darker tone and increased focus on scares and teen subplots may scare younger viewers and disappoint those expecting a lighter, comedic approach like the Goosebumps movies.
While 2023’s Goosebumps reboot might be based on a series of children’s books, that doesn’t necessarily mean the show is intended to be viewed by a younger audience. The Goosebumps franchise has been through many iterations, but most of them have one thing in common. Disney's 2023 Goosebumps reboot is not connected to the previous live-action movies, but it shares some creative blood with the director and producer of the earlier film. The reboot has a slightly older target audience and a less comedic tone compared to the live-action movies, taking a cue from the character drama in Netflix's R-rated Fear Street trilogy. The new Goosebumps show differs from the original '90s series by featuring older main characters in high school and having a serialized multi-episode story instead of being an anthology.
Disney’s Goosebumps reboot looks a lot like the recent Goosebumps live-action movies, raising the question of whether these two incarnations of the franchise are related. Goosebumps began life in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s as a series of children’s horror novels from Rl Stine. This bestselling series soon spawned a TV adaptation that served as a launching ground for future stars like Ryan Gosling.

One of the most celebrated cinematic interpretations of Stephen King is the two-film adaptation of his seminal horror novel "It." Directed by Andy Muschietti, with the movies released in 2017 and 2019, "It" follows the twisted coming-of-age of a group of childhood friends in Derry, Maine. While the seven kids are harassed by neighborhood bully Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) and his gang of teenage ne'er-do-wells, a different kind of evil festers under Derry. Primarily appearing in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård), this otherworldly monster instills fear in its young victims before consuming them entirely.
Though the creature has haunted the region since ancient times, the first chapter takes place in the summer of 1989. That's when Pennywise surfaces to claim new victims around Derry while setting its sights on the main characters. Finding strength and solace in numbers, these friends refer to themselves share a bond under the banner...

From the moment The Haunted Mask hit TV screens one chilly October afternoon in 1995, Goosebumps fans the world over knew that a movie was only a matter of time.
Those were the days of Goosebumps bedding sets, green and purple wrist watches bathed in cobwebs and time spent begging parents for the $8.95 (plus $2 shipping and handling) so that one might join the hallowed, card-carrying ranks of the Official Goosebumps Fan Club. Bookmobiles everywhere overflowed with copies of Night of the Living Dummy II and The Barking Ghost and the silver screen was ripe for the kind of wicked playfulness and fiendish glee that only R.L. Stine could deliver.
But adolescent aficionados of the spooky and the strange never saw their dream of a 90s big screen Goosebumps adventure realized. Monster kids grew into horror loving adults before Slappy and his gang of sinister monstrosities escaped the pages of R.L.

Goosebumps 3 may not happen due to the poor performance of the 2018 sequel, which received mixed reviews and had lower box office earnings. Instead of a third movie, a Goosebumps TV series reboot is being released on Hulu and Disney+ in October 2023, likely due to the success of the original 1995 TV series and the potential for longer storytelling in a serialized format. If Goosebumps 3 were to be made, it would likely focus on the SlappyWorld book series, building on the foundational lore set by the first two movies and featuring the return of Slappy The Dummy, who will also be part of the upcoming TV series.

Jack Black's role as Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine is significantly reduced in the movie sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween. While Stine plays a smaller role, he still appears in the movie, but only for a few minutes in the big finale. The main characters of Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween defeat the villain themselves, with Stine only appearing afterward to congratulate them.
While Jack Black’s fictionalized take on R.L. Stine played a big part in the first Goosebumps movie, his role was pared down significantly in the sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween. Goosebumps proved a surprising success when the family-friendly horror-comedy was released in 2015. Loosely based on the children’s horror novel series of the same name from the ‘90s, Goosebumps didn’t adapt any of these specific bestselling kid’s books to the big screen. Disney's Goosebumps reboot combines elements from previous adaptations, creating a new, original narrative with meta-humor and comedic relief. It appeals to both new and nostalgic fans. The show's multigenerational cast and meta-elements make it more effective than other horror revivals. It can explore the cultural impact of Goosebumps and engage both '90s kids and their own children. Disney's Goosebumps improves the horror revival formula by incorporating the parents of the young heroes into the story. It balances the appeal between new viewers and fans of the original TV show.

Disney's reboot of the Goosebumps show, along with its release on popular platforms like Disney+ and Hulu, could spark renewed interest in R.L. Stine's other horror series Fear Street, potentially leading to more adaptations. Despite the lack of updates on Fear Street's future, the success of the Goosebumps franchise could push Netflix to greenlight more adaptations, including a potential Fear Street 4 or other related projects. The Fear Street Trilogy's viewership and the increased attention on Stine's work could have an impact on Netflix's decision to continue the series, and even a small update on the franchise would be appreciated by fans.
Disney is officially rebooting the Goosebumps show based on beloved children's books from acclaimed horror author R.L. Stine, but another adaptation on streaming deserves attention. For many who grew up in the '80s and '90s, the Goosebumps books and TV show were a gateway into the horror genre.

Among fans of all things spooky, Spooky Season -- the extended holiday period leading up to Halloween -- is generally recognized as beginning on July 5, since Halloween is the next major commercial holiday after Independence Day. Disney seems to have embraced this idea with the release of "Haunted Mansion," a family-friendly spookfest based on the Disney parks attraction, directed by Justin Simien ("Bad Hair") and starring Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Unfortunately for the ghosts and ghouls of "Haunted Mansion," the movie had two things working against it: a bloated $150 million budget, and a release date slotted for the weekend after Barbenheimer, the surprise team-up of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" that has blown the box office away. Earlier this week, projections for "Haunted Mansion" pointed to a $30 million opening weekend, but after the movie grossed just $9.9 million on Friday including Thursday previews,...

‘American Horror Story’ fails to punch above its weight with a deep, raw idea that’s unfortunately stuck in a shallow episode and grave.
“For a minute. For a thousand years. Forever.”
Horror is full of fascinating figures who make enthralling arguments for why the dead are more valuable than the living and the persecution that frequently follows this philosophy. Titles like Re-Animator, Deadgirl, The Autopsy of Jane Done, and so many others uniquely examine life, death, and the blurred lines in between the two. American Horror Stories’ “Necro” attempts to also bring grief and romance into the equation with this failed experiment that falls short in some seriously tone deaf ways, but still manages to scratch the surface of some compelling ideas.

What would spooky season be without the Sanderson Sisters? Thanks to Freeform, we’ll never have to find out.
The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 14 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. (Of course, you can watch Hocus Pocus as many times as you’d like with a subscription to Disney+, but who are we to suggest a commercial-free viewing experience?)

To wit: Japan’s Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train has perhaps become the story of the year. A runaway success across this period, and in its 9th weekend, it is now estimated to have crossed at least $310M worldwide. This makes it the No. 3 movie of 2020 overseas, behind The Eight Hundred ($474M in China) and My People, My Homeland ($431M in China) as it overtakes Tenet ($303.5M).
The movie is days away from becoming the top-grossing film of all time in Japan, overtaking Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 Spirited Away. Think about that for...

Goosebumps is heading back to the small screen, as a new live-action TV series based on the popular horror book series is now in the works. Beginning as a series of books for young readers by author R. L. Stine, each installment tells a separate horror story following children placed in scary situations, typically involving monsters and other supernatural phenomena. The franchise has also previously had a TV series adaptation and two theatrical feature films.
The new TV project comes from Neal H. Moritz, who served as a producer on the Goosebumps movies, as part of a collaboration with Sony Pictures Television and Scholastic Entertainment. It's not yet clear how involved Stine will be with the new show.
"Goosebumps has been keeping kids and families on the edge of their seats for nearly 30 years and we're very excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Neal H. Moritz to bring...
