In the time of chimpanzees he was a monkey, but now, after 30-plus years of practice, practice, practice, Beck has made it to Carnegie Hall. “This is a good-sounding room,” he deadpanned on Tuesday night, during the second of two performances at the fabled venue. “It sounds pretty good. I’ve come a long way.”
In addition to his longtime backing band — guitarist-bassist Jason Falkner, keyboardist Roger Manning, and drummer Joey Waronker — Beck was joined by the 73-member Orchestra of St. Luke’s and conductor Edwin Outwater for cinematic renditions of his most moody,...

Somewhere, at this very moment, someone's dad is probably watching one of the Jesse Stone movies on DVD, and that man is having a great afternoon. After this, he might pop in "Ford v. Ferrari" for the seventh time.
The character of Jesse Stone began his life in a series of airport novels written by the late Robert B. Parker. The first Jesse Stone novel, "Night Passage," was published in 1997 and it followed the titular former LAPD detective (and divorced recovering alcoholic) as he investigated money laundering and murder in Paradise, Massachusetts. Parker had a hit on his hands with "Night Passage," and proceeded to writer eight additional Jesse Stone novels from 1998 up until his death in 2010. Jesse Stone had become an institution at that point, and other authors began writing Stone novels in Parker's style. There have been 11 additional Jesse Stone novels written after Parker's death.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Alison Whyte in ‘The Kettering Incident’ (Photo: Ben King).
Celebrating 30 years in the acting profession, Alison Whyte is happy to offer advice to young or other aspiring actors.
Perhaps best known for her roles in Network 10’s Playing for Keeps, Foxtel’s The Kettering Incident and Satisfaction and Jocelyn Moorhouse’s The Dressmaker, the Vca graduate proffers these tips:
– Learn to live with rejection and remain optimistic: “It’s easy to get pessimistic if you are unemployed. Isolate one problem and know that it won’t affect the rest of your life.”
– Look after yourself mentally when you are playing roles that require grieving or other deep emotions.
– Don’t think about working overseas until you have a solid list of credits under your belt.
On the subject of mental health, in June Whyte finished performing in the Malthouse Theatre production of Nick Enright and Justin Monjo’s five-hour adaptation of Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet.

Screen Australia, Australia’s federal film and TV funding body, has made sufficient progress in furthering gender equality that it has set more ambitious targets.
The organization has exceeded its long-term Gender Matters key performance indicator, with 56% of projects receiving production funding having at least half of the key creative roles occupied by women, based on a three-year average. The Kpi was set in December 2015, and originally aimed for 50%. The Kpi considered the key creative roles of writer, director, producer, and in the case of narrative content (drama), the protagonist.
The new target is to have 50% of the key creatives across all projects that receive Screen Australia development and production funding to be women, measured across a three-year-average. For the new Kpi, the key creatives are directors, writers and producers and the tracking period is 2019/20 to 2021/22. From August 2020, the agency will also publish the headcount breakdown of key creative roles for feature drama,...

Breaking: Saban Films has obtained the U.S. distribution rights to Light of My Life, the directorial debut film from Oscar winner Casey Affleck, who also wrote and stars in the piece. Making it world premiere at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, the dystopian survival drama also features Anna Pniowsky as well as Emmy and Golden Globe-winning The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss.
The story revolves around a father (Affleck) and child (Pniowsky) who journey through the outskirts of society a decade after a pandemic has wiped out half the world’s population. As a father struggles to protect his child at all costs, their bond, and the character of humanity, is tested.
Black Bear Pictures financed the film. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Affleck (on behalf of Sea Change Media), and John Powers Middleton produced. Executive producers are Black Bear’s Michael Heimler and Ben Stillman, and Sea Change’s Whitaker Lader.

Beck has three Grammy nominations this year, and there’s one race where he’s on the verge of history. If he wins Best Alternative Album for “Colors,” it will be his third victory in that category, which would tie the record. Since this prize was first awarded in 1991, only two artists have achieved a hat trick: Radiohead and The White Stripes. Nice company to be in.
The revered British band Radiohead have been nominated a record eight times, and they won for “Ok Computer” (1998), “Kid A” (2001) and “In Rainbows” (2009). Those were also the three albums that earned them nominations for Album of the Year, so Radiohead have never actually won Best Alternative Album without a bid in the top category.

The White Stripes actually went three-for-three: their nominations for “Elephant” (2004), “Get Behind Me Satan” (2006) and “Icky Thump” (2008) all resulted in victories.

Exclusive: Identity Films, Hyperion Media Group and Sea Change Media set Black List writer Rosalind Ross to script Black Sam, the true-life story of vigilante pirate Samuel Bellamy. Casey Affleck will produce under his Sea Change Media banner, along with Anthony Mastromauro for Identity Films and Hyperion’s Michael Mailis. Sea Change’s head of development and production, Whitaker Lader, will be exec producer.
Black Sam is the true story of Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy, an impoverished colonist turned pirate who waged a year-long war against British oppression in the early 18th century. Dubbed “Sam the Good,” Bellamy was considered the Robin Hood of pirates; he ruled his fleet democratically, freed slaves, and stole from wealthy, British merchants to give to the poor. Despite his short career, Sam remains the wealthiest pirate in recorded history.

Did Jerry Lee Lewis kill his wife and get away with murder? Was the Church of Scientology involved in the death of Jeremy Blake, the artist who produced the cover of Beck’s Sea Change album and how did Sam Cooke and Sid Vicious really die? These are all stories from the first season of Disgraceland, a true crime podcast that looks at the deviant side of rock ‘n’ roll.
The podcast, which launched last month, was created by Boston musician Jake Brennan. Here, he talks to Deadline about its origins, the challenges of creating compelling audio stories and plans to turn the project into a bigger, possibly scripted, play.
Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Cooke, Sid Vicious and the tale of satanic ritualism within the Norwegian black metal scene make up the first four episodes of Disgraceland with future episodes revolving around Van Morrison, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, the Rolling Stones and James Brown.
