From it’s cool, stylised opening onwards, in which the present day world of T2 Trainspotting is cut with iconic shots from the original, Danny Boyle’s sequel to what is often hailed as one of the most important British films ever made rides high on an expected sense of nostalgia. In case the images of a young Renton (Ewan McGregor) don’t do it for you, a tender, instrumental reworking of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” should force the wistful reminiscence into overdrive – that is, until a particularly heavy scene early on reminds us suddenly, and sharply, just how brilliantly miserable 1996’s Trainspotting really was. There may never be a “perfect movie,” but there can be perfect moments within movies. YouTuber Jim Casey has taken the time to collect and organize some fine examples of such moments, and he’s turned them into a stirring, inspirational two-part series called “The Most Beautiful Shots In Movie History.” This is an elegant tribute to the visual power of cinema. And, make no mistake, it’s strictly the visuals that Casey is focusing on here; he includes no dialogue from the films he’s excerpting. This is, at heart, a tribute to the work of cinematographers, costume designers, and art directors, not screenwriters. Casey says he took his inspiration from this 2015 BuzzFeed article by Dan Dalton.

★★☆☆☆ You know when you buy a new camera, go into the garden to try it out and just snap things to see how the photographs look without necessarily caring what you capture? That's basically what director Wim Wenders seems to be doing with new film The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez. Beginning with a series of shots of a depopulated Paris, stunning in the summer sun as the camera slowly pans and the wind rustles the bright green leaves in the trees to the strains of Lou Reed's Perfect Day.
