Witches in Kembleford.
The local Pagan community are practising more and more in Kembleford, and the Church wants their activities stopped. Father Brown takes a different stance, instead offering a hand of friendship to them, but when a dead woman's body turns up at their place of worship it is firmly believed that they've taken a ritual a step too far.
It's a pretty good mystery, it's certainly different, the use of paganism always adds a different dynamic to a Father Brown story. I hate to say but I thought Jack Deam was awful in this episode, I'm not sure if it's the character, or his interpretation but he is seriously annoying here. John Sessions on the other hand was excellent, I enjoyed his scenes with Mark Williams.
Mrs McCarthy's character keeps getting more and more diverse, initially quite a puritan, now we are told her Aunt was a white witch, it seems a little out of character for her. Still an enjoyable mystery.

Jack Deam & Bunty Ruin It
The early days of Bunty, before she took over the whole show, were a sign of things to come. Bunty (Emer Kenny) is like a show within the show. She does as she pleases, and she has no fealty to Father Brown.
Bunty was staying in town with Lady Felicia due to her bad reputation and shady activities at the private girl's academy where she had been expelled. Unfortunately, when Bunty arrives on the show, the much better characters of Lady Felicia (Nancy Carroll) and Sid (Alex Price) were phased out as regular characters on the show.
Perhaps worse is Jack Deam and his horrible acting as Inspector Mallory. Even after several seasons on Father Brown, Jack Deam is incapable of adding any nuances to his interpretation of the character. He plays it as just a nasty little guy who is always degrading everyone he talks to and yelling at Father Brown. Jack Deam is dreadful to watch.

The eve of St. John
Lillith (Hara Yannas) walks through eerie Crows Wood with a feeling she's being followed. She runs and trips, crashing to the ground. As she turns to face her attacker a stone bears down on her head... Months later at the Kembleford parish council meeting Anglican Reverend Allsworthy (Oliver Gilbert) and Methodist Minister, Reverend Gillespie (John Sessions) report that the clergy have been tasked to form a committee to report about the moral threat of a coven in the village. Father Brown (Mark Williams) points out that witches aren't Satanists. However when the village drunk spies on an initiation ceremony in the coven, he's terrified to see High Priest Eugene (Ken Bones) raise a sword to Dione's (Estella Daniels) breast. When Inspector Mallory (Jack Deam) finds blood there the next day it would appear that the witches are not quite as benevolent as they maintain.. .
Fairly weak entry with not much of a strong cast of suspects, though it's always joy to watch the inept inspector Mallory investigate- his face expressions are classic. I think some viewers fail to fathom his character is meant to be a spoof of a thick detective who is shown up by the master detective which is typical in cosy mysteries. He's well funny. Plus Emer Kenny is pure eye candy.
