In the 26th episode of Deadline Strike Talk — which for below the liners signifies half a year without a paycheck that hasn’t come from Uber fares or waiting tables — host Billy Ray hits on a zeitgeist theme that gets voiced a lot by people who just feel that the business isn’t as remotely as exciting or near as much fun as it was before the folly that signatories put themselves into by chasing Netflix as it became the preeminent streamer. The result has put just about every other streamer pursuit in a position of being money losers that have strained the economics, and accelerated the demise of those conglomerates’ traditional networks, and so many other things.
Ray begins by addressing the fear that informs so many moves in Hollywood, and is anathema to great creative work. Joining him are two Hollywood veterans, John Ptak and Marc Evans. While they flourished in different areas,...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Super indie Fremantle has unveiled plans to further expand into the documentary space with the launch of a new label, Undeniable, focused on the production of premium feature documentaries and series.
Mandy Chang, Fremantle’s Global Head of Documentaries, announced the move at documentary festival Cph:dox in Copenhagen on Tuesday. The new label will sit within Fremantle’s Documentaries division and appears designed to distinguish high-end feature docs and series produced in the group from Fremantle’s more conventional reality TV and non-scripted fare.
“The launch of Undeniable further underlines our commitment and ambition to build Fremantle’s documentary output on the premium side,” said Chang. “Working with the very best filmmakers and emerging talent, the label will provide editorial and production expertise and support in multiple genres. Importantly, it will provide a platform and freedom for creative talent to unlock and explore important issues and stories to be told.

At its best, horror seeks to move us, entertain us, scare our pants off and elicit similar kinds of thrills as roller coasters do. But for those that aim a little higher — no, not in an "elevated horror" sort of way (whatever that means), but simply in terms of ambition — there's also an added responsibility to sneak in some clever observations about our world that we've generally taken for granted, done in ways that other genres simply aren't capable of accomplishing. In other words, with copious amounts of blood, guts, and gnarly kills.
When a particular movie or show manages to hit all those pleasure centers in our impressionable brains, it elicits the kind of cathartic responses found in something like Jordan Peele's deeply provocative "Nope." When an otherwise promising piece of horror media stumbles in that pursuit, well, let's just say that things can go sideways pretty quickly.

"I have quite the weekend in store for you…" Paramount Movies has unveiled an official trailer for a freaky horror thriller Margaux, the latest bland creation from B-movie action director Steven C. Miller. Yet another new "Artificial Intelligent turns against people" uninspired thriller, especially one that's about a smart home that turns deadly (why this again?). A group of college friends rent a smart house for a weekend of partying. Later, they start to realize that "Margaux", the house's super advanced AI system, has sinister designs for them. The cast features Madison Pettis, Vanessa Morgan, Richard Harmon, Lochlyn Munro, Jedidiah Goodacre, Phoebe Miu, Jordan Buhat, Brittany Mitchell, and Louis Lay. This is another of these "how does this junk keep getting made" kind of movies. It looks so cheesy and forgettable. ›››

The rumor that Amazon is rebranding its free streaming service IMDBtv has been making the rounds for the past six months but the move was given its first public airing with Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke revealing that the service would be renamed “soon.”
The service, which airs series including Alex Rider, Leverage: Redemption and Judy Justice, was originally launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive before being rebranded as IMDb TV a few months later.
It’s now set for a third name as it was thought, with its six syllables, to be too cumbersome for customers to pronounce. Deadline understands that it’s in the final stages of choosing a name and is down to two possibilities.
Salke revealed the news during a keynote session at the virtual Realscreen, where she was talking up the company’s non-scripted ambitions.

The much-ridiculed yet much-loved actor is taking on the biggest role of his life in the first trailer for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent – himself
This is a pivotal moment in Nicolas Cage’s career. Once a gold-plated blockbuster icon, he crashed to Earth many years ago in a flurry of financial mismanagement and poor career choices. You just have to look at his IMDb page for proof of the latter. Did you watch Inconceivable? Mom and Dad? Southern Fury? Vengeance: A Love Story? The Humanity Bureau? No, of course you didn’t, and they were only the movies he made in 2017.

A double bill of films by Aleksandr Dovzhenko are showing April and May, 2020 on Mubi in most countries.Above: EarthIt’s disconcerting that the collected writings in English of one of the world’s greatest filmmakers currently sells for $852 on Amazon—or a whopping $980, if you opt for the paperback—while the only American book about him downgrades his work’s artistic value in its very title (Vance Kepley’s 1985 In the Service of the State: The Cinema of Alexander Dovzhenko). Look him up on Wikipedia, and you find that his name is shared by a poker player and a psychiatrist—hardly fit company for the epic, poetic Alexander Dovzhenko (1894-1956), a pagan mystic whose masterful films look as wildly experimental, as dreamlike, as hysterically funny, as fiercely tragic, and as beautiful today as they did a century ago.A Cold War casualty, often defined in the West as a...

Exclusive: Bait, Mark Jenkin’s low budget indie feature that was a BAFTA winner on Sunday, has begun racking up international sales following its successful UK theatrical run last year.
The Festival Agency (Tfa) has now inked deals on the title for Australia and New Zealand (Vertigo Releasing/Rialto), Scandinavia (Folkets Bio) and Poland (New Horizons Association). Those territories follow the Germany release via Arsenal in October, and come ahead of the domestic bow that is being lined up for this spring.
Tfa will handle the U.S. roll out in-house, springboarding it off the recently announced SXSW special event screening of the movie that will be accompanied by a new live score.
BFI Distribution handled the UK rollout, which begin in August and snowballed from modest ambitions to eventually gross more than $500,000. That was a more than stellar result for a super low-budget homegrown movie in a crowded theatrical...

To say that a lot has transpired during Arrow‘s seventh season is quite the understatement. After kicking things off with Oliver Queen in prison, Star City was graced with a new Emerald Archer whom we assumed to be a hero. But as it turned out, the vigilante was actually Emiko, Ollie’s estranged sister, and leader of the terrorist organization known as the Ninth Circle. And since the true Green Arrow was released from the clink, he’s had to accept the fact that his own flesh and blood is the new big bad in town.
Given all that, I’m expecting for next week’s season finale to be both action-packed and emotionally draining. Fortunately, the network has thoroughly whetted our appetites with no less than eighteen images taken from the climactic episode, each of which can be found in the gallery below.

Young Justice: Outsiders gives us three thirds of a good episode broken by pacing issues
This Young Justice review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Outsiders Episode 4
The first episode of the second batch of Young Justice's return is mostly transitional, and while it's got a lot to like, there are a couple of issues that I'm worried point to a bigger, structural problem that may develop with the show.
When we left our team (not to be confused with The Team), they were kicking ass in Markovia to rescue a bunch of kidnapped kids and the newly powered crown prince. "Private Security" sort of picks up where they left off, but it jumps around in time a little. There are three different thirds of individual good episodes, but there are a couple of tacked on plots that feel like mandatory check ins, and the way they're paced out doesn't integrate at all.

When Colton Haynes was confirmed to return to Arrow as a series regular this past spring, the fanbase likely thought a reunion involving the Dynamic Duo that is Green Arrow and Arsenal was a certainty, but Oliver Queen spending his days and nights in Supermax lockup sure put a damper on that.
Still, having Roy Harper around in any capacity is a real delight, though I certainly can’t be the only one who assumed he’s the new Emerald Archer prowling Star City. But after tuning in for last night’s premiere, I’m not so sure anymore.
You see, while the producers are yet to reveal who’s under the hood, we do know the new vigilante in town is crossing names off a list eerily similar to the one Oliver swore by back in season 1. Furthermore, the new flash forwards could have some connection to his true identity.

Though Arrow has played host to a wealth of characters taken from the comics such as Black Canary, Arsenal, Mr. Terrific, the Atom and the Emerald Archer himself, it’s also injected new personalities into the mythos throughout its run. In fact, this is a familiar practice for TV shows in the genre, lest we forget that Chloe Sullivan and Lionel Luthor were unknown quantities before Smallville came around.
Before the series debuted in 2012, one could imagine Oliver Queen existing without the likes of John Diggle or Felicity Smoak orbiting him, but now it just seems downright impossible to do so. Given that, lead actor Stephen Amell hopes these additions to the enduring tale stick around long after he’s hung up his leather hood, saying the following in an interview with The Music Australia:

Across its six seasons so far, The CW’s Arrow has ticked off pretty much every major aspect of the Green Arrow’s lore from the pages of DC comics. We’ve seen him stranded on Lian Yu, form a team of allies including Black Canary and Arsenal, face villains like Deathstroke, etc. One classic element of Green Arrow’s character that’s persistently refused to surface, though, is Oliver Queen’s traditional goatee.
Sure, Stephen Amell’s version of the character is still recognizable for his facial hair, but he’s typically sported stylish stubble instead of the goatee we all want to see. It sounds like that’s about to change, though, as the actor’s revealed that the goatee is finally coming to Arrow in season 7. The star dropped the announcement to the assembled crowd at Motor City Comic Con this weekend, saying:

Sylvester Stallone is back for another impossible prison break in the first trailer for Escape Plan 2: Hades and this time he's enlisted the help of Dave Bautista. This whole story focuses on busting out a friend who has been locked away in one of the most brutal, secret, and secure prisons on the planet, which is called Hades. Here's the synopsis:
Years after he fought his way out of an inescapable prison, Ray Breslin has organized a new top-notch security force. But when one of his team members goes missing, Breslin must return to the hell he once escaped from to save his friend from the prison’s brutal human battleground known as Hades.
I enjoyed the first film, which also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, and this sequel looks like it will be just as fun. The film was directed by Steven C. Miller and it also stars Curtis Jackson,...

They knew they would have to go up against a violent cult to reunite with their son, but the family had no idea how soon they would become the prey in Jackals, a new movie from Scream Factory Films. Ahead of its September 1st release, Jackals is teased in a trailer that channels the visceral violence and isolated horror of Bryan Bertino's The Strangers and Jack Ketchum's Off Season.

"Let go of my son right now!" Lionsgate Premiere has unveiled the first trailer for an action thriller titled First Kill, from director Steven C. Miller, of the films Marauders and Arsenal most recently. It looks like Hayden Christensen is back! First time we've seen him in years, also in the trailer for Numb, at the Edge of the End from last week. Christensen stars as a Wall Street broker who ends up with his family in the small town where he grew up. When they witness a murder, the criminals take his son hostage, and he must help them get free in order to save his family. Bruce Willis stars as the local police chief, and the cast includes Ty Shelton, Gethin Anthony, Megan Leonard, & William DeMeo. This looks forgettable, if you ask me. The stars of yesterday now are making three films a year you never knew existed until they show up on Netflix.^ Real Movie ^
In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.
The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way...

Known in other territories under the name ‘Arsenal’, given the affiliations to a football team in the UK, instead this Steven C. Miller production is going by the name of Southern Fury. A shame, as this underwhelming production doesn’t live up to expectations, it’s easy to ridicule, and is a film that makes you thankful there are plenty other good productions out there to watch instead. Arsenal is a somewhat fitting title.
When growing up, Jp (Adrian Grenier) always looked up to his older brother Mikey (Johnathon Schaech) – but now, the tables have turned, and while the former runs his own business and is happily married with a child, the latter is constantly in debt, resorting to selling drugs to make ends meet. As such, he remains closely affiliated with the nefarious crime boss Eddie King (Nicolas Cage), and between them they concoct a plan for Mikey to go missing,...

Fresh off his crime drama Arsenal, Steven C. Miller has signed on to direct Sylvester Stallone in Escape Plan 2.
At least, that’s according to The Tracking Board, who report that Miller will now supplant Mikael Håfström at the helm for a sequel designed to be a Chinese co-production with Leomus Pictures. Considering that a significant chunk of Escape Plan‘s $137 million haul came from overseas in 2013, news that the embryonic follow-up will cater to international audiences isn’t all that surprising. Little is known about the plot of Escape Plan 2 at the moment, but we fully expect the action-thriller to incorporate some Chinese story elements in order to resonant with the local audience. China continues to be a huge player in world cinema, and with experts claiming that the country will become the biggest film market on the planet in two-to-three years, a Hollywood B-movie appealing to international audiences...

Nicolas Cage doesn’t hurt for work. The Academy Award-winner starred in five movies last year, whether you saw them or not (even as a Cage devotee, I only ended up seeing two), and the prolific actor already has a whopping six set to arrive later this year, including the already-released Arsenal from earlier this month. But the rage inside Cage doesn’t go down quietly. He figured out his next project, the bank heist drama 211, which starts filming in March in Bulgaria.
Written and directed by York Alex Shackleton, 211 follows a good cop (Cage) trying to dismantle a recent bank heist. Seems simple enough, right? 211, by the way, is police code for robbery in progress. It finds Cage on the other side of the law this time, as he recently found himself portraying a quirky bank robber in last year’s overlooked dark comedy The Trust, which was one...

It’s a new week, and nestled in another dumpster-load of content destined for the garbage pile that is the growing video-on-demand market comes Stephen C. Miller’s Southern action thriller Arsenal. The first of two movies Miller has due for release in 2017, which incidentally will be his fifth since 2015 (in case you needed an idea of the patient love and care the director brings to his projects), Arsenal is incoherent, thin on ideas original or otherwise and, despite its brisk 92-minute running time, a curious slog. Even by the now shockingly low standards of Nicolas Cage, lo-rent crap extraordinaire, Arsenal is bad – a product of totally incompetent filmmaking that will, as you drift, have you pondering how the money it cost to make could have better served humanity.

As a piece of filmmaking and storytelling, Arsenal is, at its best, marginally competent in the way that a basic-cable crime procedural might be. It attempts grindhouse-level bloodiness that is excessive enough to expose the effort but also not quite excessive enough to bring the gore hounds running. At its worst, the film makes it clear just how low it’s aiming and how lacking in ambition it is. Rather than striving to come up with anything new—or at the very least innovative—it contents itself with wading through a sea of hackneyed tropes. The characters’ arsenals may be jam-packed with things that zing and explode, but the movie’s own is frustratingly empty.
Mercifully, only a narrow swath of clichés make it into the film’s main plot — a man named Jp (Adrian Grenier) must pull together $350,000 to save his criminal of an older brother Mikey (Johnathan Schaech...

For a short while as its story begins to unfold, Arsenal seems like it might represent a tug of war between a gritty indie drama and a shamelessly pointless Dtv programmer. It also seems like it might somehow explain what its title means in the context of this movie—it’s not about soccer fans, and while it does feature guns, the characters don’t seem to have access to an arsenal’s worth. But by its bloody end, both of those hopes remain far out of reach.
There are ever-so-slight notes of Southern indie filmmakers like David Gordon Green or Jeff Nichols as Arsenal begins with two young brothers in Biloxi, Mississippi (playing itself—a credit to a movie that might well have outsourced the job to Louisiana). Mikey (Zachary Legendre) is sometimes mean to J.P. (Kelton DuMont), but his big-brother cruelty often gives way to protective instincts...

While deploying an action-pulp armory of slo-mo slaughter and hard-slamming brutality, the crime thriller Arsenal also taps into primal matters of brotherly loyalty and betrayal. The brothers — one straight-arrow, one ne’er-do-well — are played by Adrian Grenier and Johnathon Schaech, digging into two-dimensional roles with conviction. The key attraction, though, if you find sadistic maniacs entertaining, is Nicolas Cage in full-throttle wacko regalia.

Dog Eat Dog and Army of One star Nicolas Cage has been offered the chance to take on the role of Ronald Reagan in a new biopic, according to Page Six.
Not to be confused with the scrapped Reagan, a movie which once had Will Ferrell on board to play the former commander-in-chief as senile, Page Six claims that Nicolas Cage is harboring some doubts about the potential gig, fearing that the decision to portray Ronald Reagan in a positive light could “[infuriate] the liberal Hollywood crowd.” Due to this conflict of interests, negotiations have reportedly stalled, though for what it’s worth Cage’s publicist Stephen Huvane responded to a request for comment by stating that, “it’s way too early in the development process.”

Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage is at his gonzo, gurning, goofball best as an American man on a mission to Pakistan to single-handedly mount a war on terror, in the most outrageously hilarious culture clash comedy to hit the screen since Borat, and directed by the comedy genius behind that film, Larry Charles. It’s made all the more berserk and bizarre by the fact that it is a true story.
Synopsis:
Eccentric ex-convict Gary Faulkner has a vision from God, telling him he must single-handedly mount a war on terror. Faulkner, armed with a single samurai sword bought from a home shopping channel, travels from the Us to Pakistan to embark on his highly dangerous and foolhardy mission – where he runs into bemused locals, irate CIA men, and even America’s most wanted, Osama bin Laden himself.
Army of One is available to rent on VOD and Digital HD from 19th December.
