Saudi Arabia Uncovered
a_baron4 December 2016
Saudi Arabia is an enigma. Although it has an ancient history, the country as it exists has been around only since the break up of the Ottoman Empire in the wake of the First World War. The most orthodox of all Islamic states, it is the home to two of the three holiest sites in Islam, and the Saudis take their task as guardians of these sites extremely seriously. The wealth of the Kingdom is built on oil, but although its rulers are fabulously wealthy, and Westerners working there on contract are paid handsomely, there is poverty, even squalor in the country, and this coupled with what most people would regard as repression, is a recipe for revolution.

The programme makers take a trip to Saudi, but their visit is cut short when they think, probably erroneously, their cover has been blown, but better safe than sorry. We are shown a public whipping and even a beheading!

More controversial is the claim that the Saudis are exporters of terrorism, if not entirely by design. Although most of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis, terrorism, by whatever definition, is not tolerated here. You will have to make up your own mind about how much truth and how much spin this programme contains, but not all Westerners are unhappy with the Saudis. As one Englishman wrote in 1997:

"Why was it that, within six months of returning to a 'civilised' country, I was threatened at a local bus stop by a gang of youths? Why is it that, as a law abiding citizen, I would fear for my life walking around the back streets of London? Why was it that, when I lived in an 'uncivilised' country for six years, there was not one single occasion when I was remotely threatened by anyone? Why was I able to walk around the back streets of Riyadh without a worry in the world?"

This was riveting from start to finish. May not be entirely objective in its presentation of Saudi and King Salman but it's up to you what you want to believe. Highlights and exposes the dark side of Saudi.

Chop chop square!!!!!
samabc-3195212 June 2021
Chop chop square, abuses and tortures on women, a woman drives a car and ends up in a prison for weeks, making videos are forbidden, anything one says against government (or supreme) either is lashed 1000 times or beheaded in public, a 17 year old of Arab Spring gets a death sentence for making a video and on the same day this nation gets a UN seat on its humanitarian council !!!!! Most countries close there eyes and ears and look other side when it comes to its ongoing tortures and torments to its own citizens, its ties with Al-Qaeda, Daeshes in ISIS and its homegrown Wahhabi ideology that results into an emanation of radicalism.. although the documentary covers an exiguous details and facts but it still manages to capture the ugly picture of what is happening there.... pl note that this does not represent an objective view ..

Cheap propaganda

While most second rate reporters keep parroting North Korea is THE ONLY place in the world where one cannot film, despite dozens of documentaries published, people do not seem to be aware that there are other places where there are strict restrictions on taking pictures. And Saudi Arabia is one of them. So I was hoping for footage. And there are only a few minutes of footage coupled with some other minutes of footage anyone can get on youtube and other similar sites, some of them repeated through the almost one hour of documentary. The rest is just talking heads making an emotional case based on three cases, from the implied multitudes. There is no new information. And most of the documentary is shot outside Saudi Arabia.
