By the time Chinese star Zhang Ziyi walked the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet on the event’s penultimate night last Friday, it was already clear that Chinese cinema was back on the international stage in a major way. The world’s most glamorous movie event premiered five films from China across its official selection this year, ending a long period of relative obscurity that began with the pandemic. The two most prominent Chinese films to unfurl in Cannes this year — Jia Zhangke’s acclaimed drama Caught By the Tides and Peter Chan’s commercial powerhouse She’s Got No Name, starring Zhang and a slew of big-name Chinese actors — were both backed by rising studio Huanxi Media.

The inaugural Prix Luciole Awards ceremony, celebrating artistic achievements in the field of film poster design, took place Friday at Le Gray d’Albion hotel in Cannes.
Co-sponsored by China’s leading movie ticketing platform, Taopiaopiao, and the Paris-based Alliance Cinéaste Chine-Europe, the Prix Luciole aims to raise awareness of the importance of graphic design in the promotion of movies, and to honor work that demonstrates exceptional design concepts, strong emotional resonance and visual impact in film posters.
The Prix Luciole award for best poster, which carries an award of 1,000 euros, went to Belgian filmmaker Leonardo Van Dijl’s Julie Keeps Quiet. The jury praised the modern approach of the poster, photographed by Max Pinckers and designed by Sophie Keij, as well as its perfect balance of typography and photography, clever use of empty spaces and a powerful photo choice that delves into the character’s psychology.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed at the sliver of dawn on Thursday, April 11. Festival director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch unveiled this year’s crop of films across the many sections, from the Competition to Un Certain Regard, during a press conference beginning at 5 a.m. Et. See the full lineup below.
The 77th edition of Cannes comes to the Côte d’Azur May 14 through 25, and a few titles were already confirmed to be in the mix. There’s Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic “Megalopolis,” which has already screened for a rarified few in the United States to much awe and speculation over what distributor might take on Coppola’s experimental vision. For his first feature since 2011’s “Twixt,” Coppola gathered a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia Labeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman for a sci-fi vision of a ruined NYC-like metropolis.
