Cool show
captainsquirtus13 January 2019
As I watched this second installment, I found myself feeling sympathetic for both the ghouls and the CCG ( the police force that fights them).

Weird sequel
rafreeluzky27 April 2020
I don't read the manga, but i read the tokyo ghoul:re one. I automaticly confused because i thought that after i finished root a, i will understand a whole story of Tokyo Ghoul but i'm not.

I started to read the reviews about this anime and i found one big problem, they skip THE BOSS FIGHT. Wth, the skipped some plot and they also skipped the batlle what the hell did they wanted to show us exactly.

Enjoyable Followup but not as potent as the first series
dameon_green11 March 2020
I've not read the manga's but after watching the second season / follow up series and feeling like it was missing something critical it appears this chapter in the anime failed to do "Tokyo Ghoul" justice.

Root Masterpiece

Masterpiece of all Masterpieces, I started crying when that "Oshieto" song started playing for the last time in the last episode.

The Manga Sucks, and this ANIME ROCKS!

I love Root A Anime!

Too many plotholes and illogical story
bogdanbalostin15 March 2019
If I would not have read the manga, I would probably have rated it 2 stars. It's that bad. Mind you, the first season was a 9 for me.

Let's start with the flaws. Side stories that don't go anywhere. Characters without any purpose. Characters suddenly appearing in the middle of action scenes from nowhere. The main character (is he even main character anymore?) missing from lots of important parts of the story. And I could go on. Long story short, it's a very confusing show that makes little sense.

Does it have cool action scenes? Yeah but... I don't think you can be invested in them if you don't care about the characters.

In spite of all this, the show can be enjoyable if you read the manga first. As I already read the manga, I could fill up plotholes and understand the reasons for the existence of action scenes and some secondary characters. The anime diverges from the manga a lot but some scenes are picked directly from the manga without any thought if they fit here or not.

The last few episodes are especially interesting (if you read the manga, again I repeat myself)

So many plot holes
oliviaid8 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched quite a few animes and I'm honestly surprised about how highly rated this one is. I usually have the 'OOH' sensation when big questions are answered and there are plot twists but the anime left me with more questions than I had even imagined possible. I watched it all in 2 days so I'm not forgetting anything but what the hell 1) all this mystery about the author lady (terrible with names) and how she is clearly a Ghoul, but no one realises and it doesn't amount to anything. 2) Touka goes from a complete ghoul queen to a total wimp for no apparent reason other than studying 3) the 'Owl' is apparently the manager of the cafe and no one cares, and he's still meant to be seen as a good guy?! 4) Hide (name) just dies for no apparent reason, and he's wearing the CCG uniform -- HE WAS A MAIL MAN (how he even got that job is a mystery, and what was he doing at that job other than delivering mail?!) 5)mega owl from no where thanks very much.. that makes total sense..

After a few revisits its not as good as I remember
skatechannel8526 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw this back in 2017 or 2018 I dont remember but while revisiting because I want to get into the halloween spirit. So here's the problems I dont care for the characters at all not even Kaneki. Touka's brother is forgettable and dies i feel nothing. It's not like in Stiens;Gate or Akame Ga Kill when someone dies you feel it. But here i dont feel anything i dont know anyone they aren't as memorable as Nishiki, Touka, Heck even Hinami but yeah these new characters are weak and pointless.

Watch after you have read the manga
chakai-2401910 April 2017
Tokyo Ghoul is a overall overwhelmingly positive story, IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE MANGA. The whole story aspect has been thrown out of the window as if the TV screen was on fire. All the story aspect is messed up and ruined and there are too many plot holes. It feels like what a five year thought this was about and then wrote the story briefly. I made a mistake of watching the anime first then the manga because I didn't like the story this much but my friend kept recommending the manga so I gave it a try and oh gosh... It was great. Most of the plot holes were covered and important story aspects were covered in the manga rather than this unfinished anime. Overall, I would not recommend this anime at all UNLESS you read the manga first and want to watch a animated version of the ACTION SCENES. But at least they got one thing right. The awesome soundtrack. So please watch after you had read the manga.

3.5 Stars out of 5 Stars
ajneeago9631 July 2022
Dubbed: Taking place shortly after the first miniseries, this sequel shows the now transformed Kaneki working for the Agori tree, which is an organization of ghouls that some would say are not very nice. It's up to his friends to try and figure out what his deal is. Idk to me it just felt like Kaneki was turning evil for no reason I guess until toward the end where they reveal what they reveal. I definitely enjoyed this miniseries, but not quite as top notch as the first series. Nonetheless still just as relentless, and plenty of cool characters arcs.

I liked it but...
jasminn_tan17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not gonna lie - I was confused with how the plot developed in this one. While it continued from where S1 left off, it felt incomplete and kind of rushed. There was a considerable number of plot holes and some scenes felt so disjointed which was a disappointment. I couldn't understand the thing with Aogiri and the Owl up until the end. And speaking of the end, a lot of things were left hanging or left out and it was so frustrating to have to Google what really happened.

Even so, I thought Kaneki's characterization and his character development was good. After all the torture he had to endure in S1, there was no surprise that he was broken inside. He was heavily traumatized and he didn't really know how to cope with it. It was just bad for him overall.

I liked the last episode but the way it ended left me with more questions and answers. I thought S3 would be a continuation of S2 but I watched half of Ep1 of S3 and was like ??? I had no idea who these new characters were. I don't know if I'll continue with S3 since the main characters from S1 and S2 have been replaced with a new set of characters.

Unexplained and sort of a mess
arminsoufian7 April 2021
Ok maybe the rating doesn't match the title but there were good moments in my opinion, very enjoyable at times and at least it was a coherent overall story. But so many storylines went nowhere and had no explanation. Characters weren't developed at all when introduced which is a huge shame. A lot of the end was unexplained aswell. Overall very disappointing with some very good, enjoyable moments.

Not all that bad, but...
mattkerr-7301722 September 2018
Disclaimer; I have never read the manga, so any deviation of this anime adaption from the manga does not affect my opinion, as it seems to be a gripe with many people who have reviewed this part of the TG franchise.

Tokyo Ghoul RootA is... a mess, to put it kindly. There are things that I liked about this series over the last one, such as more time devoted to The Doves, who I think are interesting as a balance to the world of Antique and the ghouls. I also thought the music, like the last series, remained consistent with the mood of the story. I liked a particular scene where they talk about coffee, and I enjoyed hearing about Yoshimura's backstory. However, the series did become slightly as I had imagined before watching the first series, with not much justification to the violent storyline for our characters. And the pacing is just all over the place, and I feel that so many of the new characters that were introduced had absolutely no impact on the story. It never becomes unentertaining enough to be called "bad", per-se, but it still feels like a disappointment after the first series.

Disappointing and unexplained
arminsoufian7 April 2021
Ok maybe the rating doesn't match the title but hear me out, there were good enjoyable moments in this with a touch of depth. But.. There was so many storylines that went nowhere or made no sense, ie: why kaneki joined aogiri in the first place. Etc. There was also a lot of unexplained and underdeveloped characters just being shoved in our faces, a lot of unexplained, underdeveloped character decisions and their past ie: the black dog nonsense with the koma don. The last few episodes had no explanation of what happened to some of the characters and just pissed me off.

Overall a bit of a mess but idk why I'm giving it so high, maybe it was the first few episodes or something or enjoyable moments with characters I like but idk.

Decent
mihutheodorcosmin20 August 2021
Confusing and bad. Not worthy to watch, it is really bad compared to the manga by Sui Ishida (which is a masterpiece on it's own). Bad anime by Pierrot.

Not as good
pugley28 August 2019
Trash and not as good as s1 and s3 and 4. Ending is also very stupid and this series dose not even have a manga. This is what happens when you don't stick to the script. You get a mess of an anime and it is not fun to watch and is very boring. Only a few good episodes. STAY AWAY from it
