- After saving Kayo, Satoru is trying to get close to the next victim that the killer is going to be targeting. As he is going after a lead, new information about the killer is discovered.
- The episode begins with a flashback of the true 1988 timeline where the killer succeeds in killing Kayo, Hiromi and Aya. Satoru notes his suppression of these memories contributed to the gaping hole left in his heart. A speech from Yashiro about filling up the what is missing from your life inspires Satoru.
Satoru, Kenya and Hiromi all attempt to talk to Aya who is reading King Lear. This seems to make Kenya nervous for some reason as he's only read romeo and Juliet and can't relate. Meanwhile Kazu and Osamu spy on them from across the street and decide to get closer to eavesdrop better. Aya finally recognizes them from seeing them go in and out of their hideout. When Satoru calls it the hideout She accuses them of being childish which gravely offends Kenya who usually acts grown up. Satoru tries to keep Kenya calm until Aya makes fun of superheroes sending Satoru over the edge and causing Hiromi to hold him back. Aya finally has enough and when she tries to leave Kazu comes out of nowhere and claims that hideouts are a symbol of a mans adventurous spirit. He invites her to come check it out but she just calls them all weird and runs away.
The Next day the boys are all at the hideout and Satoru finds the pair of gloves he lost there. Hiromi reminds Satoru that its almost about time for Aya to go to the park but Saturo is content to just watch her from the hideout. Satoru wonders how he can get close to Aya just when she barges into the hideout and gets a Loud but warm greeting from Kazu.
The next day after school Kazu is off on his own to meet up with Aya and tells the others that they will head to the hideout later. Hiromi thanks Satoru and Kenya for spending time with him when he would usually be alone because of his parents working late. Sensei Yashiro seems to take note of Misatos witdrawn behavior as she leaves school alone again.Back at the hideout Satoru wonders how he will catch the killer now that hes taken the victims out reach. Kenya asks Satoru if this is the end of the detective game but Satoru answers in the negative, theres still more work to be done.
Later that night in bed Satoru remembers that his mother found out the identity of the killer in 2006 and thinks that it may be someone she knew in 1988. He figures that without his victims the killer will be looking for a substitute, much like Yashiro and his candy.
The next day after School Hiromi runs afoul of the Moody Misato as she leaves the staff room. Satoru is waiting for Hiromi when he comes outside and the two walk together. Hiromi points out to Saturo that Misato has been alone lately. Satoru seems to realize his part in her alienation and says he will try to talk to her on Monday. On Monday morning Satoru enjoys a nice breakfast as Sachiko watches him lovingly. He tells her he might be late and she instructs him to call and tell her what time she can expect him home. After school Misato leaves alone again as her old friends make plans to ditch her and Ride in Yashiros car. Satoru takes too long thinking up a way to talk to Misato and she ends up getting on a bus. Kenya and the rest of the boys show up. Hiromi tells Satoru that she is headed to the gym to cheer on Hamada in the hockey game. Satoru decides to go alone but promises to come to the hideout if anything happens and to give a full report to Kenya tomorrow. Satoru bids them all farewell and they note how much of a big deal he makes out of it even though they will see him tomorrow.
At the gymnasium Satoru arrives and spots Yashiro(who has ordered bento for his students) , the Yashiro/ Hamada fan club and Misato. He wonders if Misato is just the thing the killer is looking for after losing his prey. When Misato gets up Satoru follows her only to realize she just has to go to the bathroom. He waits for her back in the seating area but when she takes too long coming back he gets worried and goes to check on her. Before he can sneak into the girls restroom Yashiro-Sensei comes around the corner returning from a candy break. When asked why he isnt watching the game Satoru says he wanted to talk to Misato and Yashiro tells him she went outside. Satoru races outside and sees the delivery truck for Yuukis family pulling off. Satoru enlists a bewildered looking Yashiro to follow the truck in his car.
In Yashiros car Satoru finally spills his guts to an adult about his Detective game. Yashiro acknowledges that while it may be a game it is surely effective. Yashiro reminds Satoru to put his seatbelt on and when it doesnt seem to want to latch Yashiro easily clicks it into place. The teacher is interested in how Misatos predicament came to Satorus attention and praises him for his determination in seeing it through. Satoru admits that he is using Misato as bait to draw the killer out. Yashiro finally understands the ulterior motives behind Satorus sudden social blossoming but is thrown off when Satoru quotes something he hasnt actually said to him yet. Satoru realizes this blunder but it is at this moment he notices Yashiro is wearing gloves. (This is only odd because Yashiro wasnt wearing gloves the other time Satoru was in his car and it appeared to be colder then as there was snow one the ground.) Yashiro tells Satoru they share the same philosophy in life and he was planning on saying the same thing at graduation. (Duh. Thats where Satoru got it from.) Yashiro tells Satoru not to feel guilty about using Misato as bait and makes an odd statement about the basis of Good and evil actions being the same. Yashiro reveals that hes been using varying tactics of his own to get close to someone. Satoru thinks Yashiro means a lady friend but the teacher only grows vaguer. Satoru offers Yashiro a candy from the glove box but when he opens it there are only pills. Yashiro drives into a tunnel darkening the car and tells Satoru that there is no candy and that this isnt his vehicle with a creepy grin spreading across his face.
Satoru asks what Yashiro means but that but the Teacher begins to ramble about his happiest moments. Satoru notices that the pills in the glove box are laxatives. Yashiro calls Satoru out on lying about pretending there was a killer when in fact he knew there was a killer. Slowly Satoru begins to realize hes in trouble. As Yashiro makes a turn leaving the truck behind them he assures his student that Misato isnt in the truck. Yashiro admits he had no idea Satoru was the one undermining him at every turn until the day he saw him following Aya. He reveals that he set his plan in motion after dropping off Satoru and his mother. Yashiro invited Misato to a game and told Hiromi about it, reasoning that if Satoru showed up it would prove his role as the teachers nemesis. As Satoru looks like he might puke or spontaneously combust Yashiro details how he laced Misatos drink with a laxative and ordered bento to get the Shiratori family truck out to the gym. The icing on the cake is the car he has stolen to use in place of his own for the crime. All too late Satoru begins putting the pieces together, He remembers Yashiro being a suspect on Mr.Sawadas list but having so much faith in his teacher he discounted the validity of the claim. Finally we see the true Yashiro red eyes and all as Satoru realizes he is the man who kills his mother in the future. Yashiro drives Satoru out of town and parks just short of a frozen lake. Satoru struggles to get his seatbelt off but it is all for naught. Meanwhile Sachiko cooks dinner and wonders where her son is. Kazu and Aya have a lovely stroll in the snow. Hiromi parts ways with Kenya and Osamu. A happy looking Kayo comes home to her grandmother. None of them aware of the utter peril their loved one is in. Yashiro reiterates his disbelief that Satoru has backed him into such a corner and comments that its almost as if hes seen the future. Yashiro wants Satoru to know that what is about to happen isnt revenge, its at the root just a substitute for not being able to carry out his original plan. With that Yashiro gets out of the car and tells Satoru that while he must die he has won safety for the town and his friends. Satoru insists he wont die until he sees Yashiro taken to task for his crimes but is told that is nothing more than a pipe dream. Yashiro sets a basketball on the gas pedal of the car and sends a screaming Satoru plunging into the lake. Yashiro vows to leave the town as he walks away from the sinking car. Just before he goes under Satoru reveals that he knows Yashiros future but it is too late for the killer to do anything about it. Satoru struggles for as long as he can but eventually loses consciousness as the future he knows ceases to exist, the last thing he can manage to think is "Airi."
