- The killer finds the hiding site, though Kayo luckily manages to avoid being seen. Realizing she's still in mortal danger, Satoru tries to find a way to save her life, but worries about whether it will actually work.
- Kayo quickly realizes the person who just got on the bus is not Satoru checking in for a late night visit. The person sets down a backpack and kicks a cardboard box out of frustration. Separated by only a curtain Kayo covers her mouth to keep from screaming and being discovered. We see that the culprit is wearing nice brown dress shoes and after a few tense moments he leaves , Kayo peeks out the window just in time to see the man walking off into the night and she lets out a sigh of relief.
At the Fujinuma household the ever guileless Satoru cannot mask his surprise at seeing his mother up early and making him a fancy breakfast. While Satoru is trying to break the record for eating a meal in the fastest time Sachiko gets down to brass tacks. She wants to know where he is going so early and who he is seeing. Satoru boldly states that it is a secret but promises his mother that he isn't doing anything bad. This is apparently enough to get him off the hook and she sends him on his way with an extra lunch.
Satoru wastes no time getting to the bus and bringing Kayo the extra food his mother gave him. Kayo is obviously impressed with her breakfast and Satoru sits with her while she eats it. After Satoru leaves for school Kayo smiles when finds a note from Sachiko who has figured out that her son is helping a friend in need. In his rush to get to school Satoru runs past Aya Nakanishi the last victim in the string of murders he aims to prevent. Oddly enough at that moment she is quoting their mutual friend Yuuki who has probably spoken to Aya in the past.
In class Sensei Yashiro makes note that Kayo is absent again and the kids all look at Satoru to see his reaction. Yashiro says that Kayo could return at any moment and begins lessons.
Later in the staff room Yashiro questions Satoru a bit about why he's so calm even though Kayo is missing. Satoru uses Yashiro's own words on him when he says there's no use in worrying when you can't do anything about it. When Satoru suggest that Yashiro call the police Yashiro notices his student recoil when he mentions the police getting involved and getting someone in trouble. At this Yashiro seems to lighten up a bit and reveals to Satoru that he will accompany child services to Kayo house that evening. Satoru is elated that the authorities are getting involved and runs excitedly through the halls.
Yashiro and the social workers get no answer when they knock on the door at Kayo's house. Despite the protests of the social workers Yashiro lets himself in through the rear sliding door. They find evidence that Kayo's mother had been alone at the time and skipped out when they came knocking. The social workers are upset at not being able to take Kayo into custody but resolve to come back in the morning. Satoru watches in secret as Yashiro assures the social workers that Kayo is safe for the moment.
Back at the hideout Satoru relays the news to Kayo , Kenya and Hiromi. He is sure everything will be straightened out in another day or two. Satoru reminds Kayo that she will be taken from her mother and Kayo has no problem with it. As if sensing the boy's growing apprehension about losing her as a friend Kayo tells them that she will get a warm feeling inside whenever she thinks about them. She also gives Satoru his birthday gift a pair of mittens she's knitted herself. Satoru says it feels as if he's waited forever to receive them and begins to cry. Kenya playfully teases him but Kayo changes the mood entirely when she suggests that Satoru spend the night in the bus with her. The boys blush and Hiromi says she's gutsy. She sets them straight and explains that someone came in last night. While the boys make light of it Kayo explains that it was an adult and he kicked a box like he was angry. Upon inspection of the backpack Satoru immediately recognizes the contents as the tools the killer was planning on using to kill kayo. Despite all of his efforts to save her Kayo is clearly still very much in danger.
The Time line and details of Kayo's murder are gone over much more thoroughly this time. Adding that the boot prints from the crime scene match Yuuki's and a spray bottle was used to make Kayo freeze to death faster. Satoru realizes that he has placed Kayo in even more danger by trying to rescue her. They decide that Kayo can't stay there another night and while packing up Satoru finds some coal and a small stove that belongs to the killer. when he envisions the killer using the smoke from the stove to suffocate Kayo he flips out and begins tearing things down until Kenya calms him down.
Satoru back up plan is a simple one but as the four children stand in front of the door to his home he appears very confident it will play out in his favor. Sachiko opens the door and looks the children over asking only for an explanation. Satoru tells her that having to bring Kayo to his home is the result of him following his mother's advice and standing by Kayo. Kayo recoils as Sachiko reaches out to her and is surprised to receive a loving pat and words of encouragement. Satoru as usual can't help but speak his mind and admits that he expected to get scolded a little. Sachiko maintains that she wouldn't tell him off for helping a friend in need.
Sachiko prepared dinner for many since she was unsure of how many people her son would end up bringing home and Satoru wonders if he was so easy to read. During dinner (Curry again SURPRISE!) Kayo returns the lunch box and note. Sachiko sneaks off to call Yashiro and let him know that Kayo is with her. She also asks if Kayo will be sent to an orphanage but Yashiro has another plan since Kayo mother is avoiding him. We can't hear what he says but Sachiko agrees to do something at 7:00 o'clock. Yashiro places another phone call to someone who knows Kayo but we are unable to identify.
Satoru shows Kayo the graphic novel of the superhero he admires and Sachiko comes to get Kayo to take a bath with her. Sachiko can tell Kayo has probably never had positive physical contact with an adult and offers to wash her hair. Though Kayo declines Sachiko insists and Kayo ends up enjoying it. (Enjoy the Sachiko-San fan service in this scene you deviants!) Sachiko eventually tickles Kayo causing a playful commotion and Satoru is left in the other room letting his imagination get the best of him. Once Kayo and Sachiko are out Satoru points out that Kayo has brand new pajamas. Sachicko tells him she bought them beforehand prompting her son to once again suspect yokai.
While making the beds Satoru puts his foot in his mouth when he talks about the memory of a school trip he technically hasn't actually been on yet. He is able to cover it up by saying he saw it in a picture. The awkwardness level goes way up after lights out when we see the three of them sharing a bed but with Sachiko in the middle of the young couple. Sachiko asks if she is in the way and Satoru replies yes while Kayo says no. This earns Satoru a thump on the head for having a big mouth. The night wouldn't be complete if Kayo didn't ask Satoru if he was stupid and so she does.
The next morning is a morning just like any other for Satoru who can always look forward to a breakfast cooked by a loving mother. But as Kayo approaches the table and takes in the sight of the extravagant meal it triggers a slew of bad memories: A cup noodle left on the table for breakfast one day , a single slice of white bread another , and the worst of all 200 yen (about a dollar and eighty cents USD) to fend for herself with. Kayo is overcome with emotion probably wondering why her own mother can't love her and take care of her this way. The scene closes with Sachiko attempting to comfort the savagely neglected child.
At the Hinazuki residence Kayo's mother has reached the end of her rope, without Kayo to abuse she has resorted to just trashing the girl's room until someone at the door gets her attention. She stops to listen better and hears that it is Kayo. She flings the door open ready to lay the smack down on her poor daughter until she sees the Fujinuma family step out of the shadows.
