- Satoru has an amazing breakthrough which results in a third chance of sorts. This time he is determined to revamp his game plan and change the course of time.
- In a short recap the cuffs are slapped onto Satoru as he is charged with murder, attempted murder and arson. A devastated Airi watches on as officers haul him away. Satoru catches sight of the man who killed his mother as he gloats after successfully framing the pizza delivery boy. Remembering that the lives of Sachiko and Kayo are at stake Satoru for the first time consciously triggers a revival.
Amazingly he lands himself back in 1988 on his first date with Kayo Hinazuki at the science center. Again she tells him that she is glad she gathered the courage to come with him. Happy to see her again Satoru concurs as his eyes tear up. Unsure why he's acting so emotional Kayo asks him again if he is stupid this time he replies in the affirmative. Just in the nick of time the rest of Satoru' five man band arrives (Kazu, Hiromi, Osamu and Kenya) They are worried about intruding but Satoru and Kayo assure them all is well. Satoru seems to understand that this is his final revival and chance to save his loved ones and vows to do whatever it takes this time.
As the gang is leaving the science center Satoru offers to treat his friends to Okonomiyaki (a Japanese style pancake with various ingredients that is eaten as a snack.) Kenya seems to be more worried about a book he loaned Satoru 2 weeks ago and asks if his friend has gotten around to reading it yet. Satoru has no memory of Kenya lending him a book but Kenya insists it is interesting and that Satoru read it when he gets home.
Satoru arrives home to his mother cooking dinner and becomes overcome with emotion again after spending time in a future where she is dead. She asks if he had a fight with Kayo but he insists that he is fine. Most likely feeling guilty about the attitude he gave her the day he got out of the hospital he urges her to remember that she can get to Ueno from Hokkaido without changing trains. Of course because she asked him for this information 18 years into the future Sachiko has no idea what he is talking about.
It is the day before Kayo is due to be abducted and a renewed Satoru who has now lived through this day 3 times has shed all reservations about what others might think. He and Kayo stroll up to the school holding hands. A public display of affection that does not go unnoticed by their schoolmates (Hiromi chimes in with his signature "Satoru's got guts!") Satoru affirms to himself that this time he is throwing caution to the wind.
Inside Satoru fesses up to Kenya that he has lost the book he was supposed to read. Oddly enough Kenya who obviously loves books isn't in the least bit concerned and only wants to talk to Satoru privately for a moment. Kenya also tells him not to worry about the book as it never existed. Moments later on the stairway Kenya states that he is happy to see Satoru become a more serious person. Though he likes the new Satoru the ever observant Kenya is well aware that something is amiss and very frankly asks Satoru who he is, noting that he has become almost like another person. He even knows the exact day the change occurred.(the first day Satoru's revival brought him back to 1988) Kenya reveals that he feels put to shame as he already realized what was happening to Kayo a long time ago and chose to do nothing. Once again Kenya asks who Satoru is. Satoru Tells Kenya he is a superhero or at least is trying to be. This seems to assure Kenya once and for all that it is truly still the friend he's always known. Satoru tells Kenya about Kayo's impending murder and his plan to stop it. Kenya asks to be let into the fold and the two seal their partnership with a handshake. The two discuss their feelings about Kayo on the way to class and find out that they took too long talking in the hall and have been marked tardy. Kenya notes sometimes super heroes get shafted as they stand in the hall way holding two buckets filled with water each.
After school Satoru sends Kayo to the Rec center with Kenya and Hiromi. Satoru heads over to Yuuki's house with the plan to create an alibi for his friend who will later be framed for Kayo's Murder as well as several others. Yuuki makes a new paper airplane while Satoru asks him vague questions abut the layout of his home. During all this Yuuki is using a box cutter and appears nervous when Satoru's questioning turns to Kayo. It is unclear whether Yuuki is acting guilty or if this is just part of his awkward mannerisms. Satoru tells him that Kayo has become part of his group and Yuuki figures that's why he hasn't seen her as of late. After a tense moment Yuuki expresses happiness that Kayo has found acceptance.( He also surprises Satoru by swearing.) with two new planes completed Satoru takes his leave and deduces that the killer must have seen Yuuki with Kayo prompting their decision to use Yuuki as a scapegoat. Satoru arrives at the rec center and is startled to find their usual table empty. He finds them in the gym and warns himself to not deviate from what usually happens as it will make the future impossible to predict.
Back at Satoru's house he is again surprised at the double party thrown for him and Kayo despite living through it before. After cake and presents Satoru rushes out claiming to have forgotten something at school. Kenya seems to be the only one picking up on the suspiciousness of his actions. We find Satoru back outside Yuuki's house tying a rock up in a note that says "I will kill you." In a shocking move Satoru chucks the rock and note through the window of Yuuki's father's room. Satoru knows that when the Shiratori's(Yuuki's family name) call the police the time spent filing a report can be used as alibi in case Kayo is still murdered. Satoru wastes no time getting on to his next task which apparently is pushing Kayo's mother down a flight of steps.(This reveals an important detail to the story. When Satoru goes to push Kayo's mother his eyes have turned red meaning that presumably any character will have red eyes while doing something wrong and it its not a infallible way for us as the viewer to identify the killer.) Before Satoru can go through with it he is stopped by Kenya who warns him of the trouble it could cause should she die and Satoru gets locked up for it thus destroying any chance of saving anyone.
Kenya and Satoru sit for awhile and Kenya reveals that he has been following Satoru for 2 days now. Kenya has seen how desperate his friend has been to save Kayo and became worried that he might be in danger. Kenya is also disturbed by what Satoru just did to Yuuki's house. Satoru tells Kenya he wants his help notifying the police about Kayo's abusive mother. Kenya says that could cause a stir but Satoru insists that is exactly what he wants. Realizing he is running out of options Satoru admits that he doesn't care if he ends up imprisoned as long as Kayo is saved. Kenya tries to dissuade him on the grounds that Sachiko would be sad if he was locked up but Satoru knows his mom wouldn't mind if it was to help a friend. After giving it some thought Kenya actually agrees that that sounds more like Sachiko's MO.
Satoru and Kenya finally head back so Satoru can drop Kayo off at home.(Luckily our hero remembers his coat this time and doesn't need Kayo's scarf.) Satoru and Kayo both seem ready to say something at the same time but Satoru pushes ahead and asks for Kayo's permission to kidnap her. She asks him if he's stupid and he tells her yes, that's the reason that kidnapping her is the only plan he can think of. Kayo who probably has nothing waiting for her at home but a sound ass kicking consents to Satoru's plan.
Satoru and Kayo trudge through the snow dragging a portable stove on a sled. They meet up with Kenya at an old bus belonging to a nearby elementary school. (Not their school.) Satoru and Kenya open the vents and cover the windows while Kayo lights the stove. Before long they have a cozy hideout for Kayo so she doesn't have to spend her birthday getting murdered. The two boys get ready to leave and Satoru promises to sneak back out and visit in the middle of the night, his secret code will be three knocks before entering. Kayo looks sad for a moment but smiles and thanks her friends. The boys leave after a solemn promise from Satoru to protect her.
On the way home Kenya and Satoru tease each other about how corny they sounded when talking to Kayo. Satoru also advises Kenya to play stupid if anyone finds out that Kayo has been "kidnapped". Sachiko notes that Satoru took a long time but he nonchalantly lies and says he and Kayo stopped somewhere on the way to her house. Satoru makes sure that Kayo's mom hasn't called looking for her and then tries to talk his mom into to going to sleep early. Once he believes Sachiko is asleep Satoru makes a run for it. Unbeknownst to him his mother is awake and well aware that he's up to something opening her eyes the second he's out the door. (Since Satoru didn't catch it this time I'll say it for him: YOKAI.)
Kayo is knitting something on the bus but puts it away once she hears Satoru knocking. He comes bearing the gift of soup in a cup and as they sit down to enjoy the midnight snack Satoru invites Kayo to come along on a camping trip he has been planning with the others.
The next morning Satoru and Kayo are woken up by Kenya who warns them to clear out before the kids from the other school start showing up. We cut to Sensei Yashiro's class where the shrewd teacher takes notice of Kayo's absence and Satoru's obvious lack of concern.
Over lunch Satoru and Kenya deduce that Kayo's mother hasn't notified the authorities about her daughter's disappearance. Satoru goes through the timeline of Kayo's abduction and death and realizes due to the changes he's implemented everything that happens from this point on is uncharted territory. In the teacher's room Sensei Yashiro places a call to someone but we don't know who.
Back at the bus Hiromi has been let in on the rescue mission for Kayo and is helping keep her company. Hiromi is worried about how it will all turn out but Satoru gives his word that he will take full responsibility. Kayo surprises everyone when she states that she will take responsibility leaving no one to blame as you can't be arrested for kidnapping yourself. Satoru remarks that Kayo is his hero.
Under a full moon Kayo lay asleep in the bus/ hideout and is awakened but the sound of someone entering the bus. At first she thinks it's Satoru but we can see that it is an adult with a pea coat and a backpack.
