Here we have the "21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards", actually the first of two editions of this particular award show as this one was held in January and the one for next year already in December. As the title says, it was up to the critics this time do vote for the year's best in all kinds of categories about film and television, no music. It was a close decision for me to vote between thumbs-up and thumbs-down this time, which means between a rating of ***/***** and **/*****, but eventually I will be generous as there may have been some bad winners, but also dome pretty good one. The biggest letdown for me all the love for The Big Short, not only because it is pretty ridiculous to be categorized as a comedy, but also because I did not love the film at all. The love for Amy Schumer and Son of Saul also didn't appeal to me. My favorite winner of the night was certainly Brie Larson. Host T.J. Miller was okay I guess, not too bad, but not memorable either. Back to Amy Schumer, her award was really the worst joke of the night. What the fox was that? This is especially pathetic as her speech was just as bad in my opinion, but the introduction by Apatow was among the best moments of the night with the exception that I wished he could have introduced another recipient. But maybe Americans realize now too with that Goldie Hawn film that Schumer is nothing but another Cindy aus Marzahn and my fellow Germans will know what that means. Another thing I did not like too much was that some awards were just shown quickly as messages on screen and that's always a bad thing for award shows. Let the winners have their moments in the spotlight. On the other hand, the ceremony this way also easily surpassed the two-hour mark, so maybe the right solution would be to just have fewer awards in general. I guess they could cut out some, but luckily I don't have to decide that. Many winners here went on to triumph at the Oscars too, for example Vikander who was facing a close race against Winslet. But Stallone for example only won here. Overall, a tolerable award show without any really great moments and as always it helps if you have seen most contenders, so you can cheer for your favorites. I give this one a thumbs-up, albeit a cautious one.
