Before killing the Ranger pursuing him, Robert Rogers says "Take a circle till you come to your own tracks...you forgot my rules, Eldridge." One of Major Rogers's 28 Rules for Ranging was in fact "If the enemy pursue your rear, take a circle till you come to your own tracks, and there form an ambush to receive them, and give them the first fire."
