With its list of new releases for June 2024, Disney+ isn’t going to beat the “only a Star Wars and Marvel streamer” allegations. That’s because there is just one major new release and it’s of the Star Wars variety.
Thankfully, Star Wars: The Acolyte, premiering on June 4, sounds pretty good! This series from Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) is set during the end of the High Republic era and will follow a respected Jedi master (played by Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae) investigating a crime that brings him back into contact with his former Padawan (Amandla Stenberg).
Aside from that, Disney+ has little else going on this month. But a fresh Star War and more episodes of Doctor Who should be enough for most of us.
Here’s everything coming to Disney+ this June.

Jimmy Fallon, the iconic show host has interviewed hundreds of celebrities on his show throughout the years. Unafraid of being a comedian, Fallon texted MCU star Jeremy Renner once when the actor was in the ICU during his snowplow accident.

It, as one would expect, was not a normal text, like “How are you?” or “Hope you’re doing okay.” Appearing in a recent interview, Renner revealed what the message contained and it is for sure hilarious!

The above statement isn’t intended to be a joke. However, Jimmy Fallon wasn’t afraid to make a joke out of it when Renner was in the ICU after his snowplow accident! Back in 2023, Renner was involved in a horrible snowplow accident that left him in an ICU.

June is busting out all over, especially on streaming. Whether it’s hiding from the heat or taking a break from school and work, Disney+ and Hulu are here to satisfying your mid-year entertainment needs.
Disney+ will premiere the first new live-action Star Wars since 2023’s middling to “The Mandalorian” Season 3 and “Ahsoka” with “The Acolyte,” starring “Squid Game” breakout Lee Jung-jae. The series is set before the events of “The Phantom Menace” with a familiar master-padawan storyline but new characters and a new era where that dynamic unfolds. The streamer will also premiere various new options for kids and family-friendly programming, as well as new episodes of “Doctor Who” starring Ncuti Gatwa.
On Hulu, FX comes in hot for the summer, along with an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’s “Queenie,” the brat-pack documentary “Brats,” and yes — more “Love Island.” The TV and film library continues to shift with new and expiring titles,...

The last time Netflix’s The Witcher looked like it was off to a good start was before it even premiered. While having an avid fan of the franchise as its lead star could have been a great advantage to the TV show, it quickly turned out that neither the showrunner nor the writer’s room cared about the source material. Frustrated by having to constantly fight for every bit of lore, Henry Cavill quit the series after S3.
But Netflix simply sent a new Geralt of Rivia our way… Much to fans’ dismay.

"Boardwalk Empire" is something of an outlier in the so-called "Golden Age of Television." The show premiered on September 19, 2010 and received robust critical praise. Despite the reviews, "Boardwalk Empire" did not find the audience enjoyed by its contemporaries and it has not yet matched the reputation of its predecessors. One way or another, the story of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson has been outflanked by "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," "The Sopranos," and "The Wire." Consequently, eight years after its expedited fifth and final season, it's time for something of a retrospective.Set during the 13 years of Prohibition, "Boardwalk Empire" spins fact and fiction into an exquisite tapestry of family, greed, lust, and brutal gangster politics. Nucky Thompson's grip on Atlantic City may be the show's center of gravity, but it also captures the zeitgeist of American organized crime in the early 20th century. The real-life figures are too numerous to quantify here,...

Over 20 visual effects studios and 1500 visual effects artists across the globe came together to deliver Amazon’s mega-series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Companies such as Industrial Light & Magic, Weta FX and Dneg provided close to 9500 shots.
VFX producer Ron Ames says the eight-hour series is designed to play like a theatrical experience, however audiences experience it. He says, “Our target was the 65-inch screen at home, but we made it so that it would play technically beautifully in everything up to an IMAX screen. It is finished to a theatrical resolution.”

The show follows a host of characters including young Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Lord Durin (Owain Arthur) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), and centers around the rise and fall of Númenor,...

July is the month that North America goes back to the movies in earnest. There have already been some theatrical release of note this summer, but as everyone knows the blockbuster movie season doesn’t get started until a Marvel movie premieres. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for July 2021, Disney+ is offering up some options for those who prefer to stay home.
In addition to arriving in theaters on July 9, Black Widow will premiere on Disney+ as well. Disney+ subscribers can purchase the first Marvel movie released since 2019 for $29.99. Judging by the early buzz, that “Premier Access” price may be worth it. Disney+ is keeping the original summer movie parade going in July with The Rock’s latest action film, Jungle Cruise, premiering on July 30.

2020 has turned out to be a pretty big year for Disney Plus, what with many major releases going up on streaming instead of dropping in theaters. One of the biggest talking points on the internet this week was Oscar-nominated star Elliot Page coming out as transgender and non-binary. Once most known for his roles in Juno and Inception, Page has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years thanks to his turn in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. Fans can’t wait to see more of Vanya Hargreeves in season 3, but the performer’s announcement has caused concern that he may wish to depart from the show for new creative avenues.
That’s not going to be the case, though, as the streaming giant has confirmed that Page will be back for the next run of the hit comic book adaptation. This has caused people to wonder, though, if the character’s storyline will be impacted by the actor’s own coming out. While that’s not necessary, as we’ve had many cisgender stars play trans roles...

KollywoodThis spoof film, which does not have big names in the star cast, has had a great reception from the audience.Anjana ShekarIt is not often that a film outside the realm of superstars like Rajini, Kamal, Vijay, Ajith, Suriya, or Vikram gets an astounding opening but for Cs Amudhan’s Tamizh Padam 2 the response has been great since the word go. With multiple posters and promos leading up to its release, Tamizh Padam 2 was off to a good start, creating a pre-release craze among moviegoers. Starring Shiva and Iswarya Menon in lead roles, Tamizh Padam 2, which released on July 12, had its first show at 5.00 am in certain theatres in the city, a privilege usually reserved for the bigger stars. In addition to it, a few theatre owners also increased the number of shows on the first day following a good response. According to film writer Sreedhar Pillai, Tamizh Padam 2 released in over 350 theatres in the state, an enviable accomplishment for a film of its stature. A reliable source from the crew told Tnm that the film released in around 75 screens outside the south in India. What explains the hype? In recent times, many star-driven films like Bairavaa, Vivegam, Singam 3, etc. have had a lukewarm reception at the box office. Therefore, does Tamizh Padam 2, a spoof that takes a dig at star vehicles, getting such a huge response indicate a change in the mindset of people? “I would attribute it to the online campaign and the number of promos that the makers of this film did before its release. The campaign has worked well with the youth - their target audience. While Kadai Kutty Singam has targeted family audiences, Tamizh Padam 2 has focused on the youth. This equation has worked to the benefit of both the films,” says Sreedhar Pillai. Kadai Kutty Singam, starring Karthi and Sayyessha in the lead roles, released a day after Tamizh Padam 2. Talking about the film’s pre-release hype, a representative from Rohini Silver Screens in Chennai says, “The film had a good buzz even before its release, so we decided to open a 5.00 am show on its first day. Seeing a good response, we increased the number of shows on day one to 13. Almost all shows on the first three days were houseful.” The film’s solo release on a Thursday has also worked to its advantage, says Kaushik Lm, box office tracker. “Also the film’s prequel, Tamizh Padam, was well-received. All those who saw this film in 2010 were eager to catch up with its sequel. Additionally, the makers made sure their promos created interest among the present generation. They had their social media game on point,” says Kaushik. Kaushik goes on to add that while others spend heavily on social media campaigns, the makers of Tamizh Padam 2 seem to have perfected this game. “Their teaser, video song, posters were all unique and very well received and this is one of the most important reasons for the film doing so well.” Dodging bullets While Tamil cinema is well-known for its fan frenzy, how did a spoof film that parodies all the other popular stars’ movies gain the kind of acceptance that it has today? Actor Shiva in his interview to Tnm mentioned that nowhere else will the audience be so welcoming of a spoof film. “I’m not sure if the film would have had the same kind of reception if it were to release in Bombay,” he said. Does this perhaps indicate a change in the audience? That people are bored of watching mass, commercial films? “The reason could be because it is a spoof film. The genre itself is new and we haven't had a spoof in eight years. This is also a reason why it did well. Had there been four spoof films already, it might not have worked to this effect. Even if the makers of TP2 were to make one next year, I'm not sure how well it would be received,” says Kaushik. Sreedhar Pillai concurs and says that it is the uniqueness of the genre which has made it such a big hit among the audience. "I don't think this indicates a change in the mindset. It's all entertainment for the audience," he says. While many have been largely appreciative of the film, there have been a few fans who've objected to the film taking a jibe at their favourite stars. However, they are in a minority. The numbers game According to Kaushik, the film’s first day collections in Tamil Nadu is Rs 4.5 crores, which is a great number for a film that isn't star driven. The Tn collections for films which have top male actors is usually between 15 to 20 crores on the first day. However, the budget of these films is also likely to be much higher than Tamizh Padam 2. “In Chennai alone, the first-day collection of Tamizh Padam 2 has amounted to Rs 63 lakhs,” Kaushik says. The number doing the rounds for the first four days is a whopping Rs 12 to 13 crores in the state. Tamizh Padam 2, a sequel to Tamizh Padam that released in 2010, has a cult following in the state, thanks to the ingeniousness of the makers. The sequel, directed by Cs Amudhan, takes potshots at all the popular cop films and does not spare Tn politics either. EntertainmentWhile Sai Pallavi will be the female lead, Rakul will play an important role in the film.Suriya and filmmaker Selvaraghavan are teaming up for the first time for a project tentatively titled Suriya 36. The combination of Suriya and Selvaraghavan has already set the anticipation bar very high and audiences are eagerly looking forward to the film. While Rakul Preet Singh was originally considered for the female lead’s role, the makers recently confirmed that Sai Pallavi will play the lead. On Friday evening, it was announced that Rakul is still part of the project and she will play another female lead’s role. To be produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film is gearing up for Diwali release. While not much is known about the genre of the film or the subject it might deal with, the industry grapevine suggests that the film could be a revived version of Selvaraghavan’s own film Kaan, which was shelved for various unknown reasons. In 2016, Kaan was launched with Simbu in the lead and the makers even shot briefly, before dropping the project without clarification. An official announcement from the makers regarding these reports which has been making the rounds since last week is awaited. The regular shooting is expected to commence after Pongal. It was recently revealed that Suriya’s project won’t be a simple film and it requires lot of research. Selva, in an interview earlier this year, revealed that he had plans to work with Suriya soon after Kadhal Kondein, and the dream has been finally fulfilled after a decade. Suriya, it is believed, after Selva’s project might team up with Gautham Menon. According to reliable sources, Gautham and Suriya had planned to work together soon after Singam 3. However, due to a prior commitment to Vignesh Shivan, he had to work start working on Thaana Serntha Kootam, which is gearing up for release on Pongal this year. Content by Digital Native.

KollywoodVaralaxmi Sarathkumar spoke openly about sexual harassment in the industry, Suchi Leaks led to a social media storm, and much more.Tnm Staff2017 was a year of ups and downs for the Tamil film industry. It was a year that saw several controversies rocking Kollywood and not all of them had to do with cinema. PETA vs Kollywood stars In January, as the jallikattu protests broke out in the state, many stars including Kamal Haasan, Vijay and Suriya, came forward to register their protest against the ban on the traditional sport. The animal rights organisation PETA came in the eye of the storm as the public turned their wrath towards it. When a tweet was posted from actor Trisha's Twitter page in support of PETA, all hell broke loose. Though the actor deleted the tweet and claimed that her account had been hacked, she was abused incessantly. The shoot of her film Garjanai was disrupted because of the protests. Actor Vishal who has previously supported PETA causes also came under attack as an old video of his was circulated on social media. Vishal chose to get off Twitter. Actor Suriya took the legal route after PETA suggested that Suriya was campaigning against them because of his upcoming film Singam 3. PETA later issued the actor an official apology. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar blows the lid off sexual harassment The abduction and sexual assault of a prominent woman actor in the Malayalam film industry in February sent rumbles across the country. Following this, actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar opened up about the "casting couch" culture in the Tamil film industry and said that she too had been subjected to such harassment. She also said that she would start the Save Shakti initiative to promote gender equality and security in the industry. Other women like Lekha Washington, Aishwarya Rajesh, Kasthuri, and Lakshmy Ramakrishnan also spoke about the issue and acknowledged that sexual harassment in the industry is real. Suchi Leaks March was a tumultuous time for the Tamil film industry as the Twitter account of singer and Rj Suchitra put out bizarre allegations against several people. Even as there was a lot of confusion on what was going on and who was actually tweeting from the account, a series of photographs and nude videos allegedly of celebrities were released. The "leaks" went viral instantly, dragging in the mud the names of several celebrities. Both Suchitra and her husband stand-up comedian Karthik claimed that the account had been hacked but no arrests were made in the case. Bigg Boss buzz The reality TV show generated a number of discussions and debates on social media ever since its premier in June. A relatively unknown starlet called Oviya became phenomenally popular in Tamil Nadu, beating the likes of actors like Harathi, Namitha, Vaiyapuri, Ganja Karuppu and Ganesh Venkatraman, who were all well-known to the audience. 'Jallikattu girl' Julie went from hero to villain as the show progressed and along with her, choreographer and director Gayathri Raguramm also came under a lot of flak. The show ran into several controversies but the one that really got people talking was when Oviya allegedly tried to commit suicide on the sets by drowning herself in the swimming pool. While some say that this was a publicity stunt by Bigg Boss, others say the actor was under real stress in the house. She chose to quit the show soon after. The show was also criticised for its portrayal of the mentally ill. Actor Kamal Haasan, who had been hinting that he would enter politics, dropped many a politically coloured statement using Bigg Boss as a platform. Ar Rahman's Wembley concert After several Hindi speakers slammed the Ar Rahman concert in the UK for having "too many Tamil songs" and staged a walk-out, there was much outraging on social media about the issue. While the Hindi speakers who'd walked out protested that they'd been "misled" by the ads, several asked why they could not listen to Tamil songs when it was well-known that Ar Rahman is from Tamil Nadu. The angst came not in the least because of the brewing anger against Hindi imposition in the south. The storm led to Ar Rahman deciding to have language-specific concerts for his fans in international concerts. Abusive fans Actor Vijay's self-proclaimed fans went after a journalist who'd tweeted that she had walked out of one of his films. This led to a huge social media storm and started conversations on how fans issue rape and death threats against those who say something critical about their favourite star's films. Singer Chinmayi also pitched in with her experiences in the past. Following this, actor Ajith issued a notice clearly stating that he did not want anyone to abuse other people in his name and that he would take legal action if necessary. Actor Vijay too pitched in, asking fans not to abuse anyone in his name. However, after reviewer Maran (known as 'Blue Sattai') ripped the Ajith film Vivegam, he was mercilessly abused and harassed by fans. Many industry insiders also lashed out against him for his review, adding fuel to the fire. Tr's behaviour at Vizhithiru meet T Rajendar humiliated actor Dhanshika at a press meet for Vizhithiru after she forgot to thank him onstage. Tr spoke to the actor derisively and reduced her to tears, even as other men onstage either laughed or did not intervene. Following this, Dhanshika spoke up about how lone women in the industry are treated poorly. This led to Vishal, the President of the Producers' Council, issuing a statement condemning Tr's behaviour. Since then, there have been attempts to rationalise Tr's behaviour but Dhanshika has stuck to her guns and termed it insulting. Strike against taxes The Producers' Council called for a sudden strike from October 6, protesting against the imposition of local body taxes. The government and the Producers' Council finally came to an agreement about ticket prices and taxes. However, the sudden strike led to resentment from directors whose films had been stalled. Actor Dhansika later spoke up about how small films were derailed while big ones like Mersal were given all the support. Mersal vs Bjp Vijay's Deepavali release struck a raw nerve in the Bharatiya Janata Party. The jibes against demonetisation and Gst in the film led to much outraging against the film. There was also opposition to a scene where the actor says the people should build a hospital instead of a temple in the village. The Bjp's H Raja made things worse by claiming that Vijay was attacking the Bjp government only because he is a Christian. He tweeted the actor's voter ID and letterpad which had his full name 'Joseph Vijay'. The attempt to communalise the issue badly backfired, with H Raja becoming a subject for comedy on social media and otherwise. Actor Vijay thanked everyone for their support and he wrote the letter on the same letterpad which had his name Joseph Vijay on it. Ashok Kumar suicide Producer Ashok Kumar, who is actor and director Sasikumar's cousin, committed suicide, alleging harassment from financier Anbu Chezhian. The death brought out skeletons from the cupboard and there were a few voices who spoke out against the politically powerful Anbu Chezhian. There were rumours about how the financier had sexually harassed a woman actor and held Kollywood in a vice-like grip. However, several prominent members from the industry like Vetrimaaran and Kalaipuli S Thanu backed Anbu Chezhian. Vishal's entry into politics The bitter battle in the Nadigar Sangam and Producers' Council elections have earned Vishal enough enemies in Kollywood. When the actor decided to contest in the Rk Nagar bye-elections as an independent candidate, there was much grumbling and resentment from industry insiders. However, the brewing controversy ended in an anti-climax as the actor's nomination was rejected for allegedly forging signatures. Vishal claimed that the whole thing was a sham but he was unable to contest in the elections.

KollywoodWhile the year saw many star vehicles, there were quite a few unusual films that went on to win big.Sowmya Rajendran2017 is drawing to an end, and this is a year that has seen some unusual films coming out of Kollywood. While big star vehicles like Singam 3, Bairavaa, VIP2, Mersal and Vivegam released with much fanfare, smaller films also came into the limelight and won critical acclaim. This was also an important year for films with women actors in lead roles. Not only did some of them do well commercially, they also led to much discussion on gender and women's rights. This list has films which won critical acclaim but also includes those that initiated worthwhile conversations and debates. Some of these films may be problematic but they have pushed the envelope in some way, pulled away from convention to give us something new on screen. 8 Thottakal: Directed by Sri Ganesh, the film was released at the same time as Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai. However, the thriller with its ensemble cast and tight plot managed to do well at the box office. Ms Bhaskar's performance especially came in for appreciation. The revelations in the plot work well and the film maintains suspense throughout. Aramm: Gopi Nainar's film about a District Collector who is faced with a difficult task – rescuing a small child who falls into a borewell – had Nayanthara playing the lead role. The film, set in Kattur, asked relevant questions about the rural-urban divide and was devoid of the usual trappings of mainstream cinema. Aruvi: This film, directed by Arun Prabhu, is about a young woman who has AIDS. Apart from its strong storytelling, the film celebrates values that are usually associated with the feminine – of compassion and forgiveness – through an unusual protagonist. Aval: This horror film, directed by Milind Rau, wasn't really original when it came to plot but it had impressive VFX and sound. It also marked a return to the pure horror genre in Tamil cinema, which has for long been making horror-comedies. Kurangu Bommai: With an interesting non-linear plot, this film directed by Nithilan Swaminathan is about an honest driver who finds himself in a smuggling web. With great performances, especially from Bharathiraja, the film opened to critical acclaim. Lens: Shot on a shoestring budget, this film by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan is a brave attempt to look at the issue of cyber crime. The director, who also plays the lead role, paints a vivid picture of a middle class man obsessed with pornography and cyber sex. The film is not without its flaws, but makes for an engrossing watch nevertheless. Maanagaram: Lokesh Kanagaraj's film is about a bunch of characters with no names (unlike a village where everyone knows everyone, anonymity is the norm in big cities). The film explores life in a big city and how people react and respond when they're thrown in a spot of trouble. The gripping screenplay made sure that the film became a hit despite having no big names in the cast. Magalir Mattum: Jyothika teamed up with veteran actors Urvashi, Banu Priya, and Saranya in this film about four women who go on a road trip. Directed by Bramma, the film evoked mixed responses from the audience – while some questioned the idea of women's empowerment that the film carries, many enjoyed the relevant questions that the characters ask through the film. The film also did well at the box-offiice. Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu: Directed by Suresh Sangaiah, this film is about a goat that's on its way to be sacrificed at a temple. But then, the vehicle with the goat and the people who are taking it, meets with an accident. Now what to do about the 'corpse' they have at hand? Funny and insightful, Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu is an unusual film. Pa Paandi: Although Dhanush, the director, makes a cameo, the film belongs to Raj Kiran, who plays a retired stunt master. A rare film about an elderly person discovering their dreams and following their heart. Revathi makes a delightful appearance, too. Rangoon: Rajkumar Periasamy's crime drama with Gautham Karthik in the lead role was a smart, well-executed film about gold smuggling. A good part of the film is set in Rangoon and the plot has enough twists and turns to keep the viewer engaged to the end. Taramani: Ram's film about a single mother who works in the corporate sector drew mixed responses like Magalir Mattum. The posters and teasers of the film, which showed Andrea, the lead character, swearing and questioning the patriarchal world around her generated quite a bit of buzz. While many disagreed with the film for its idea of women's empowerment, it was also unique in celebrating a woman lead who went against the established traditions in Kollywood. Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru: Although it has its share of problematic representations, Theeran was a well-made cop film which went into the nitty-gritties of a police investigation. Directed by Vinoth, the film, which is based on real events, went on to become a blockbuster. Thiruttu Payale 2: Like Lens, this film was about the dangers of the digital world. A sequel to Susi Ganeshan's first film by the same title, the movie had interesting ideas – most notably, a husband who stands by his wife despite knowing another man is in possession of her nude videos. This was refreshingly different from the usual moral landscape in which such films tend to be located. Vikram-Vedha: Directed by Pushkar and Gayathri, this film about a cop and a criminal, was an interesting take on the Vikram-Vetal myth. Both Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathy turned in wonderful performances, making for a delectable thriller that explored the grey between the worlds of good and bad.

SI3(Singam 3) in Tamil
Starring: Suriya, Anushka Shetty, Shruti Haasan
Directed by Hari
Don’t let the agitated agile ambience of unlimited energy fool you. This is a work of illimitable laziness. The writing is slothful, so much so that it often as though the script is a pretext for the fights. The direction is a muddle of rapidly moving shots with no room for the dialogues and characters to grow. It chokes the breath out of the actors. The performances are so over-the-top, they topple over and fall into the territory of unintentional humour.
The overwrought film opens with a parliamentary session in Andhra Pradesh where there are name plates in front of political dummies with announcements like ‘Opposition Leader’.
There is a law-and-order and situation in Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu’s super-cop Singam must be brought in. At this point in the passionately heroic plot, the entire audience began to cheer,...

Gnanavel Raja's much-anticipated film Singam 3 starring Suriya Sivakumar is the latest victim to fall prey to piracy which has plauged the Indian film industry for years. The movie, which is the third instalment of the Tamil action-masala franchise Singam, was reportedly streamed online hours after it hit the theatres on February 9. Earlier, the illegal Tamil movie streaming site had claimed that it would be streaming the film on the day of its release. Some websites even announced on the social media platforms that they had the original print of the film, a day prior to its release, according to a report in DC. At the audio launch of Yaman, Gnanavel Raja lashed out at TamilRockers.com for releasing the pirated versions of his films online. To which the website responded and challenged the producer to mark the release date of the movie as he won't be able to stop them at any cost.
