Shallow 30-somethings Partying and Escaping
marshalljune7 June 2024
So many films about 30-somethings show them in meaningless jobs when they really want to be painters (Am I OK?) and actors or writers. Like the world will pay them for their creations. Their me-based view of the world actually thinks that's the way things work.

But they don't work that way so they must escape through partying and pointless sexual encounters. These are the emotionally immature stars of today's culture. And they are not easy to give a darn about. Especially when they say things like, "We don't do old." And continue to comment on how cool it is to be young.

Meanwhile, apart from obliterating whatever consciousness they have through overuse of substances, they are absolutely miserable and create their own problems. But they don't have the insight to recognize this. So they point out each others' issues and flaws.

The visual style and directing is creative but the voiceover narration detracts. First of all, it sounds like someone who was asked to read out loud to the class by an elementary school teacher. Secondly, a film is there to show, not to tell the audience what is going on in the character's minds and what is happening in general. It is a shortcut that intrudes on the story in this case. Thirdly, who is the narrator and why is he a man?

This film does portray the self-centered, aimless, and pointless lives of two privileged women--both of them are gorgeous and wear well-designed clothes. It is difficult to feel sorry for them in any way. And if I don't even have a bit of sympathy for the main characters, then a film feels as empty to me as their lives.

Good portrait of our current Zeitgeist

Even though it caters more toward a female audience I thoroughly enjoyed this nice and compact movie. Its subtleness makes it unique and actually that is what this movie is all about....

Personal and witty. Characters and story telling feel real and very timely.
