Oh My Gómez! Films’ Ramiro Pavón, producer of Ana Katz’s Sundance title “El perro que no calla,” and Rocío Romero Quintana, behind 2016 Berlinale Generation 14+ winner “Las Plantas,” will both pitch their latest doc projects at this month’s Sanfic Industria, one of the biggest industry forums in South America.
Another project at its Documentary Lab is sourced from Paula Zyngierman at Argentina’s MaravillaCine, which backed “That Weekend” and “Marilyn.”
“This year we received a large number of applications from both directors and producers with large experience as well as projects by new talents,” Gabriela Sandoval, head of Sanfic Industria, told Variety, noting that some projects have been sourced from allied international industry platforms such as Industria Guadalajara, DocsMx, Fidba, Taller de productores de Panamá, Arca Residencia.
The 10 Documentary Lab projects will be presented in Santiago de Chile over August 23-26 with the final pitch on Aug. 26 before a live and online jury.

It’s been a long week in Austin, and many of the musicians and fans who flew into Texas had already split town by Saturday night — but those who were left made it a night to remember, with furiously loud punk noise, enormous Edm beats, and more. Here are the best things we saw on the final night of SXSW 2023 (you can find all our coverage from this week here).

Niña Niño Films’ “Outsider Girls” (“Las Demás”), the debut feature of rising Chilean talent Alexandra Hyland, which world premieres in the Bright Future sidebar of Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, has bowed its trailer exclusively with Variety.
Hyland was named one of Variety’s Five Chilean Talents to Watch in 2018. Her feature debut follows best friends Gaby (played by Alicia Luz Rodriguez) and Rafa (Nicole Sazo), two college girls whose pink-hued oasis is disrupted when Rafa gets pregnant after a night of debauchery. Given Chile’s ultra-conservative society, abortion is illegal except in extreme cases. They set out to earn enough to pay for the pricey abortion pills through a series of oddball part-time jobs, straining their friendship in the process.
Produced by Maltrato Films and Niña Niño Films, the film reflects one of the burning issues in Chilean society where its increasingly emancipated women have demanded an easing of restrictions on abortion.

Dark Star is planning a September 2022 theatrical release for Phantom Project in New York City, Los Angeles and additional markets across the country, with the on demand and digital release to follow.
In Phantom Project, we follow Pablo, a young actor who dreams of starring in a film, but in order to pay the bills he has to work as a simulated patient in medical schools and in weird sessions of alternative therapies.

Chilean filmmaker Roberto Doveris’ “Phantom Project” vies for the top Tiger prize at the Rotterdam film festival’s online edition this year and leads a robust Chilean delegation in other sections of the festival. Co-produced by Doveris’ Niña Niño Films and Aura Sinclair’s Agencia Rekia (“La Isla de las Gaviotas”), “Phantom Project” (previously titled “Ghost Project”) has world premiered at the fest, which began Jan. 26 and wraps on Feb. 6. Variety has snagged an exclusive first look at its teaser. Patra Spanou Film is handling international sales rights.
Filmed in early 2021 when pandemic restrictions were still in full force in Chile, “Phantom Project” pivots on Pablo, an aspiring 30-year-old actor who works as a simulated patient and in alternative therapy sessions to make ends meet. His situation gets even more precarious when his flat mate moves out without paying two months’ rent. On top of that, the guy who used...

Boutique sales agency Patra Spanou Film has acquired the international sales rights of Roberto Doveris’ “Proyecto Fantasma” (“Ghost Project”), an indie comedy with dramatic and spooky moments. The Chilean film will world premiere next week in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
It is Doveris’ second film after the youth drama ”Las Plantas,” which won Best Film in Berlinale’s Generation 14plus section. Doveris was also a producer on “El Principe” by Sebastian Muñoz, winner of the Queer Lion in Venice, and “(Im)Patient” by Constanza Fernández, Audience Award winner in Huelva. “Las Plantas” and “El Principe” are also represented by Patra Spanou.
“Proyecto Fantasma” centers Pablo, a young actor who dreams of starring in a film, but in order to pay the bills he has to work as a simulated patient in medical schools and in weird sessions of alternative therapies. And it is not just his career that becomes stuck.

Few facets of Chile’s Sanfic Industria are as keenly tracked as its Works in Progress. This is the section, after all, which introduced the industry to Sebastián Lelio’s “Gloria,” which went on to win best actress at Berlin for Paulina García and see a successful remake by Lelio himself with Juliane Moore in the title.
Sundance winners “Violeta Went To Heaven,” from Andrés Wood, Marialy Rivas’ “Young & Wild” and Alejandro Fernández Almendras’ “To Kill a Man” all made auspicious debuts at Sanfic as movies in post-production.
Sanfic Industria has now released the full list of Works in Progress set to screen onsite and online over Oct 27-Nov 5. A strong jury takes in Estrella Araiza, director of Mexico’s Guadalajara Film Festival, Busan Film Festival programmer Karen Park and Anabelle Aramburu, co-ordinator of the Mafiz industry umbrella at Spain’s Malaga Festival. They will select four titles which...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Robert Doveris's Plants (2015) is showing exclusively on Mubi from February 20 - March 22, 2018. Recent newspaper articles report that the generation in its late teens and early 20s, which habitually accesses online porn and uses apps like Tinder for sex talk, is having less actual sex. A similar cleft, between mediated overt sexuality and secret apprehension about real sex, is the central paradox of Chilean director Roberto Doveris’s winsome, quietly satirical debut feature, Plants (2015). The film’s young protagonist, Florencia (Violeta Castillo)—a shy, darkly brooding teenager—finds herself saddled with adult responsibilities when her mother, in the hospital and with increasingly meager means, cannot take care of her family. Meanwhile paralyzed and brain-dead, Florencia’s older brother, Sebástian (Mauricio Vaca), requires constant care. Whatever the causes of mother and brother’s illnesses may be—Doveris leaves this part ambiguous—after her aunt’s departure,...
