If it’s been a patchy few years for Errol Morris––one solid doc in-between a bad Steve Bannon portrait and iffy look at John le Carré––our interest in his thorough, startling oeuvre remains strong, and it’s naturally a thrill to hear word of two new features. On the documentary front he’s been adapting, for Netflix, Tom O’Neill’s Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, which quickly engendered great attention for challenging standard Manson Family narratives; and there’s a feature screenplay about Ed Gein, who Morris interviewed in 1975 for a never-completed documentary. If it doesn’t feature that footage and opts for a biopic / procedural path, it would make Morris’ first narrative since 1991’s The Dark Wind. [Screen Daily]

Lil Yachty, who dropped his psychedelic relaunch Let’s Start Here in January, rolled out his new single “The Secret Recipe” featuring J. Cole on Thursday.
The offering pairs a jazz-infused beat against hard-hitting bars that see Yachty deliver the verse: “I don’t smoke weed, already blunt, all of my cars, I had to hunt/My doggy young as hell but still will step, we call him runt/Like window shoppers, I see through every front.”

Instead of the usual Birthday Mix mixtape Lil Yachty has typically dropped around his birthday each year, the rapper has released the spacey new song “Tesla.” It leads off a four-song single pack/EP of the same name, which features a couple of other tracks he’s dropped this year.
“Tesla” has a hypnotic, fuzzy synth riff going behind Yachty’s boastful lyrics. “I ain’t goin’ back and forth with that n****/He ain’t even made no millions,” he says to kick off the under-three-minute track. The song...

Speculation about the album’s released kicked into high gear after Amazon Music apparently mistakenly tweeted out a promo the album with an August 25 release date.
But a quick check of music streaming services revealed that the hype was unwarranted, with the album’s release presumably still to come.

The familiar blare of car horn filled the air in many parts of Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, though not for the usual reasons.
It was a supportive response to the picket lines that formed shortly before 1 p.m. Pacific outside of at least 10 television and film studio offices — the first physical manifestation of the strike declared Monday night when talks broke down between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Hundreds of writers and their sympathizers gathered at union-specified sites, blasting the likes of Amazon, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Fox, Disney, Sony, NBCUniversal and Paramount over the thus far fruitless contract discussions that began back in March. “I think it’s time writers were paid a fair wage,” Brett Goldstein told The Hollywood Reporter outside of the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank. The Match Factory has acquired international sales rights on U.S. cinematographer and filmmaker Sean Price Williams’s feature directorial debut The Sweet East ahead of its world premiere in Directors’ Fortnight in May.
Written by the film critic and programmer Nick Pinkerton, the movie is described as a picaresque journey through the cities and woods of the Eastern seaboard of the United States undertaken by Lillian, a high school senior from South Carolina who gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C.
Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured fairy tale travelogue into America, where she is granted access to a variety of the strange factions that proliferate the present-day unreality of contemporary life.
Williams’s credits as a cinematographer include Owen Kline’s Funny Pages (2022), Abel Ferrara’s Zeros and Ones (2021), Michael Almereyda’s Tesla (2020), Alex Ross Perry...

San Francisco, Jan 29 (Ians) The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating self-driving claims made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The SEC probe is to determine if the electric car-maker flouted its rules in promoting its full-self driving (Fsd) and Autopilot software, reports The Verge.
Musk in November last year said the Tesla Fsd beta is available to anyone in North America.
“Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta is now available to anyone in North America who requests it from the car screen, assuming you have bought this option. Congrats to the Tesla Autopilot/AI team on achieving a major milestone!,” the Tesla CEO had tweeted.
The rollout of Fsd came at a time when Tesla faces a criminal investigation from the US Department of Justice over potentially false claims related to Autopilot, the company’s advanced driver assistance system.

Producer Uri Singer’s Passage Pictures is developing a series called “Enjoy Your Stay,” which the producer says will be based on true events surrounding AirBnB’s crisis response team and its attempts to deal with the aftermath of a crime. A former AirBnB security team member has joined the production as an anonymous source and consultant for the series, Passage Pictures says. The way that AirBnB handles incidents like rapes and shootings and its reported use of a shadowy safety crew has been the subject of several investigations by media outlets.
“We believe this project is an important contemporary story that needs to be told, to show both the victims’ and the crisis team employees’ stories,” Singer says.
Former Wall Street Journal reporter Will Connors is penning the series. This will be Connors’ first venture into screenwriting, after spending more than a decade covering corruption, business, politics, and sports for the Journal,...

Two months after the debut of musical rom-com “Marry Me,” starring Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Maluma, Bobby Crosby is getting another one of his Keenspot graphic novels adapted for the big screen. Israeli producer Uri Singer has secured the film and television rights to “Dreamless,” a Keenspot graphic novel by Crosby illustrated by Sarah Ellerton.
“Dreamless,” which was first a Keenspot webcomic in 2009 before being collected into a graphic novel, has been read by more than four million people worldwide. It is a romance about a girl from America and a boy from Japan, born on the same day in 1923. Since birth, they have somehow mind-swapped in their sleep, experiencing each other’s lives instead of dreaming. Then, their relationship is tested during World War II in young adulthood. The project is currently out to talent.

Attend enough film festivals, and you'll notice that many movies allow a variety of stand-up comics to stretch their acting muscles. While it's typically offbeat comedy that takes advantage of their humor skills, it's not uncommon to find comics showing their versatility on screen. In recent years, Jim Gaffigan has become one such comedian, stretching his acting chops in various low-key thrillers and dramas such as "Light from Light," "Above the Shadows," and "Tesla," just to name a few. But Jim Gaffigan has never been better than he is in writer/director Colin West's quirky, perplexing, and ultimately beautiful dramedy...

Jez Butterworth will adapt Don DeLillo’s “The Silence” for the screen, Variety has learned. Producer Uri Singer, who is also producing and helped put together Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of another DeLillo novel, “White Noise,” has secured the rights to the book, which was published in 2020.
“The Silence” unfolds at a dinner party in Manhattan during Super Bowl Sunday in the year 2022. The diners include a retired physics professor, her husband and her former student. They are waiting for a couple, who is set to join them after flying in from Paris. To share more might risk ruining the post-modern twists and turns.

Uri Singer has obtained the rights to “Hocus Pocus” by legendary author Kurt Vonnegut. He is developing the 1990 novel as either a film or a limited series.
Singer is currently producing a film adaptation of another literary giant, Don DeLillo’s “White Noise,” which Noah Baumbach is directing for Netflix with Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig attached to star. He is also producing “The King of Oil” with John Krasinski’s Sunday Night with Matt Damon attached to play the lead role. That film has been set up at Universal.
“Hocus Pocus” follows a college professor named Eugene who gets fired after having several of his witticisms surreptitiously recorded by the daughter of a popular conservative commentator. Eugene then becomes a teacher at a nearby overcrowded prison. After a massive prison break, Eugene’s former college is occupied by escapees from the prison, who take the staff hostage. Nearly a year after closing its physical location, New York City’s IFC Center is preparing to finally reopen on Friday, March 5. The theater has announced a range of new safety measures along with new releases and several screening series. The arthouse venue first shut its doors on March 13, 2020 as early lockdown measures called for the closure of a variety of cultural institutions. In late February, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York City movie theaters had permission to reopen at 25 percent capacity and with a maximum of 50 people allowed per screen. Other areas of the state reopened months ago.
While the state has enacted a number of guidelines for reopening theaters, IFC Center has added additional safety measures, including mandatory mask-wearing at all times, no concession sales, and no eating and drinking allowed in theaters. Its five screens will also feature reserved seating (with six feet between...

Michael Almereyda has tackled science (as a topic of either biopics or dramas) in a fascinating way in “Experimenter” and “Marjorie Prime,” and now he’s bringing that same energy to the inventor-biopic with “Tesla” (Shout Factory/IFC), a bold and audacious look at the life of Nikola Tesla. Ethan Hawke, in the title role, is evenly matched by Eve Hewson’s Anne Morgan, and they both nail Almereyda’s unique tone, which throws in anachronisms and green-screens to tell the story of someone who stretched the notions of what his peers imagined could be possible.
Also available: Madison Iseman plays a young girl with mental-health issues who can’t convince anyone she’s witnessed a crime in “Fear of Rain” (Lionsgate); 2012 indie “Watching TV with the Red Chinese” (Mvd Visual), co-starring Constance Wu and Gillian Jacobs, makes its U.S. DVD debut; Sienna Miller and Diego Luna...

Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?
While you’re asking yourself those questions, you’ll likely be asking another: where have I seen that guy before? While we can’t help with the former and stay spoiler-free, we can answer that one…

How to assess the financial success of Sundance 2020? Covid-19 makes standard box-office metrics impossible, but in sheer availability the titles reached a new high. About 85 percent of the 128 feature films and television programs that showed at Park City last year made their way to the broader public of North America, or will this year.
Revenue — the kind that’s visible to the naked eye — is another matter. All Sundance 2019 films that received a theatrical release totaled $125 million in domestic gross. Although pandemic delays mean multiple titles have yet to be released, the total box office for Sundance 2020 is a little over $18 million. That drop mirrors the overall box-office decline.
This is where we’d like to compare and contrast box-office figures, and make predictions about the current Sundance market, but the revenue or value generated by VOD, Premium VOD, or streaming — platforms where they (presumably) made the most money — are unknown.

Ethan Hawke is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain in the upcoming “Moon Knight” television series on Disney+, THR reports. The casting choice will make “Moon Knight” hard to resist for indie movie lovers, as the MCU series pits Hawke against Oscar Isaac, who is starring in the title role. “Ramy” breakout May Calamawy is also set to star in “Moon Knight,” which is being directed by Mohamed Diab and “The Endless” and “Synchronic” filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Hawke’s specific character is remaining under wraps, but he is set to play the series’ lead baddie.
That Hawke is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe might raise some eyebrows, given his buzz-worthy comments from August 2018 in which he shared his belief that superhero movies are overly praised by critics. "Give me a moment, would you, friend? I've never been on trial for my thoughts before." As crazy as 2020 has been, the truth is - we still had plenty of great movies to enjoy. His presentation is called Cinema 2020 - A Year in Film and it's available to watch now. There's clips from a bunch of films in this that I don't know if people might've even forgotten about from this year: Wendy, Love & Monsters, Over the Moon, Capone, Vivarium, Tesla. Plus all our other favorites: The Trial of the Chicago 7, First Cow, Soul, Mank, Wonder Woman 1984, Palm Springs, Da 5 Bloods, Bill & Ted Face the Music, Tenet, Possessor, Minari, Sound of Metal, The Invisible Man, Birds of Prey, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. One of the most talented (and coolest) father/daughter duos in the business, Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke are uniting on the big screen together. They are set to star together in a Beatles-themes directed by Andrew Stanton in his first live-action film since John Carter.
In Revolver, the younger Hawke will play a girl in the 60s whose life gets upended when The Beatles make an unexpected stop in her town, Variety reports. As everyone else in her small town of Anchorage, Alaska succumbs to Beatlemania, Hawke’s Jane begins to come up with a plan to lose her virginity to George Harrison. Ethan Hawke’s role is currently unknown, but it will be undoubtedly exciting to see these two finally share the screen together.
Stanton––whose latest film was a return to Pixar with Finding Dory, a sequel to his own Finding Nemo––will direct a script from Stranger Things’ Kate Trefry.

The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.
That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.
“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.

On a weekend with some semblance of indoor theatrical moviegoing, the VOD and streaming charts hit maximum inconsistency. Among our four top-10 VOD rankings: Four different titles placed #1 and 25 movies occupied 40 total positions. Only “The Tax Collector” (#1 FandangoNow) and “The Silencing” (#1 AppleTV) made all four lists.
The other two #1 positions were taken by 2013 Jason Statham-starrer “Homefront” (Google Play), likely boosted by its bargain $3.99 price. At Spectrum, “The Deep Blue Sea 3” took the top spot as it moved off premium pricing.
Among the titles that debuted last Friday, “The Vanished,” directed by actor Peter Facinelli and starring Thomas Jane and Anne Heche as parents searching for their daughter, scored best. It was in second or third place at three sites (Spectrum ends its chart before Friday releases). The higher-profile “Tesla” from Michael Almereyda starring Ethan Hawke debuted at #2 at Apple TV, a platform that often presages later success at other sites.

Sugar Pop Electric: Almereyda Gets Inventive with Curio Biopic
If one is familiar with the filmography of Michael Almereyda, one should already know when approaching his latest film Tesla the last thing they’re going to experience is a comprehensive biopic on the famous inventor and chemical engineer. But what one does experience is another interesting, idiosyncratic offering from a singularly original auteur, reunited once more with his muse Ethan Hawke as the Serbian-American innovator.
Taking place around the turn of the century, the focus here is on Tesla’s reimagined interactions while working for Thomas Edison in 1880s New York City, and somewhat vaguely conveying his contributions to electrical power and light without ever really having benefitted economically from his discoveries (at least as compared to his colleagues and peers of this period).…...

After months-long cinema closures, the U.S. box office has opened to the most significant degree since pre-pandemic times.
Movie theaters in Florida, Texas, Georgia and other parts of the country that were able to safely reopen welcomed the first major theatrical premiere since March: Solstice Studios’ “Unhinged,” a thriller starring Russell Crowe. The film played in 1,823 venues in North America, marking the widest release yet since the pandemic hit.
“Unhinged” pocketed more than $4 million over the weekend, a promising result given the challenging environment. In normal times, that figure wouldn’t be much to crow about. However, only a fraction of the nation’s 6,000 movie theaters are currently in business — and major markets like New York, California and New Jersey are still closed without a set date to reopen. The biggest ticket sales for “Unhinged” came from drive-ins in Los Angeles, San Fransisco and Sacramento, as well as multi-screen theaters in Dallas,...
