Putting a twist on the 1,001 Nights story, the Bucchigiri?! anime comes out of the gate swinging hard and throwing down punches. Ahead of its full release tomorrow, the first three episodes premiered at Toho Cinema Roppongi in December featuring the latest anime from acclaimed director Hiroko Utsumi at studio Mappa, giving us a taste of the gang-filled antics. The story features Arajin, who transfers into the roughest school in Hama Bay filled with delinquents and gangs. Quebec director Sophie Dupuis has found her voice.
So says Theodore Pellerin, the Boy Erased and Beau is Afraid actor who has starred front and center in Dupuis’s three movies to date, Solo being her latest after Chien de Garde (Family First) and Souterrain (Underground).
And she has solid promise to follow Denis Villeneuve and the late Jean-Marc Vallée as one of the top creative voices out of French-speaking Quebec after a coveted gala world premiere on the first weekend of Toronto Film Festival.
“Theodore told me, ‘I think for the first time you were talking about yourself,’ because he knows me and could say that,” Dupuis told The Hollywood Reporter after Pellerin, a close friend and frequent collaborator, read the script for Solo, her gender-bending queer romance drama.

Stars: Jackie Chan, John Cena, Chunrui Ma, Pilou Asbæk, Amadeus Serafini | Written by Arash Amel | Directed by Scott Waugh
Despite co-starring Jackie Chan and John Cena and costing $80,000,000 Hidden Strike, originally titled Project X-Traction, has sat on a shelf for five years before just now turning up on Netflix. That raises more than a few questions about its quality because you don’t sit on something like that without a reason. Usually a very good reason.
Set sometime in “the near future” a Chinese-owned refinery in Iraq is under attack by unnamed rebel forces. A team of mercenaries under the command of Luo Feng is sent in to evacuate all 498 employees, including his estranged daughter Mei, down the Highway of Death to the safety of Baghdad Green Zone.
Elsewhere, Chris Van Horne an ex-Marine who remained in Iraq after the war needs money to repair the water system for the village he lives in.

Former Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars, who recently turned 72, believes he’s “probably just going to live another seven or eight years.” That’s just one of the topics the veteran rocker opened up about in a wide-ranging new interview with Rolling Stone, also touching on his legal battle with the Crüe, his upcoming solo album, and more.
Mars recently sold his publishing rights, securing his financial freedom for the rest of his life. In revealing that news, he also put a cap on his lifespan. “I sold my publishing,” he said. “The deal was just finalized. Now I can relax and don’t have to worry about anything, since, like I said, I’m probably just going to live another seven or eight years.”
For most of his adult life, Mars has suffered from the degenerative bone disease ankylosing spondylitis, causing his body to disfigure. “I’m not going...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)Streaming has been a true blessing for anime fans. It has made brought previously inaccessible shows to the masses and also allowed for some cool experiments, with studios like Wit and Trigger, as well as auteurs like Masaaki Yuasa to give us deeply weird (and hyper-violent) anime like "Devilman Crybaby" and "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners." On the other hand, in an era where every new anime is instantly available through simulcast, it is rather baffling to see streaming jail become a thing.
Shows that would otherwise be available within hours of their initial broadcast are now held up for months on end, killing all hype. Though Netflix is slightly getter better, Hulu and Disney+ are licensing anime and withholding any sort of information about when they plan to release them, before they just...

USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has turned its eye to a quantitative and qualitative study of Muslim portrayals on television, and the verdict shows there is still vast room for improvement.
Erased or Extremists: The Stereotypical View of Muslims in Popular Episodic Series, conducted with support from Riz Ahmed and his banner Left Handed Films, the Ford Foundation and the Pillars Fund, analyzed the first three episodes from the 100 highest-rated shows in the U.S., U.K., Australia and New Zealand from 2018 and 2019. The 200-series sampling yielded one Muslim speaking character for every 90 non-Muslims (a 2 percent share in 2018 and less than 1 percent the following year). These Muslim characters came from a total of 16 shows (8 percent).
“Muslims make up 25 of the world’s population yet were only 1.1 of characters in popular television series,” said AI2’s Al-Baab Khan, lead author of the study. “Not...

In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.
The 2011 sci-fi and 1982 fantasy films have come to HBO Max and are available to stream now.

Battle: Los Angeles, starring Aaron Eckhart, and from director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath Of The Titans), is the exciting story of a squad of U.S. Marines who become the last line of defense against a global invasion. April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

Over the years, the Erased brand has kept us engaged with a slew of adaptations. The story of Author Kei Sanbe has won the hearts of millions of people all around the world. His manga series has received numerous honors over the years. The A-1 Pictures-produced anime series is among the most well-received adaptations of the original story. Netflix bought the first season of the anime for a re-release on its platform after it was aired years ago. The show’s popularity grew as a result, and the demand for Erased Season 2 doubled. February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.

HBO Max has officially entered the streaming wars and while it brings with it an impressive library of content—both old and new—it’s also realized how important a decent anime selection is to users. Warner Brothers has ties with companies like Studio Ghibli and anime specialty services like Crunchyroll, which they’re able to pull from for content.
17 titles from Crunchyroll have debuted on the service with other heavy hitters like Death Note and Hunter x Hunter already announced for later this year. Since HBO Max has an impressive anime library to work through, here’s a helpful guide to some of the best titles that are now available.

The villains of Sailor Moon season 5 have been cast!
When we covered Viz Media’s announcement of the new voice talent joining the Sailor Moon family, we couldn’t help but note a few absences. While we got the casting info for the Sailor Starlights, Sailor Galaxia, and Chibi-Chibi, there was nothing on Galaxia’s henchwomen, the Sailor Animamates.

1. The Guest
With its triangle of investigators, a Catholic Priest (Yoon Hwa Pyung), a Shaman (Choi Yoon) and a Police Detective (Kang Kil Yeong), “The Guest” can be best thought of as a loose spin-off of Na’s “The Wailing” (2015) even though the answers seem clearer cut in the former than the later. Like all good Gothic texts, the crisis in the present can be traced back to a trauma in the past at which the paths of the three intersect. As Bts tell us in “DNA” ‘this is not a coincidence’ (2017). In the present, an outbreak of violent crimes for no apparent reason bring the three together again as they search for the demon behind the outbreak whose capture would resolve their traumatic pasts. Much darker in its approach than many horror themed kdramas, “The Guest”’s tight scripting, clever casting and cinematography mark it out as a must see.
