The very first scene after the fairy tale caption at the beginning is about a man named Stapleton speaking something about a property in Baker Street. This is a reference to the characters and places in Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskerville", possibly the most iconic of the Sherlock Holmes novels and the episode's main source of inspiration.
The episode opens with the quote, "The world is full of obvious things which nobody by chance ever observes." This comes from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Looking for background information on Doyle Baske, Nick reads an online magazine SOLEE article titled "BASKE-ING IN GLORY." Near the end of the article there is the line, "With the recent passing of his father, Arthur, Doyle is set to inherit the Baske families vast fortune." The two first names "Arthur, Doyle" refer to Arthur Conan Doyle the writer of the novel Hound of the Baskervilles, and their family name "Baske" is the first five letters of the family name Baskerville in the novel.
The couple found killed while cross-country hiking lived at "five-fourteen North Adams", thus continuing the running gag of an Easter egg reference of "514" for this show which is season 5, episode 14.
The duct taping scene was the first scene that Ann Cusack, who portrayed Eliza Baske, shot for the episode.
