Updated with executive comments. Executives at Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, touted mobile video service Reels and the metaverse as two key growth areas after reporting wobbly fourth-quarter results.
Just prior to the call, shares in Meta Platforms plunged in after-hours trading after the company missed Wall Street forecasts for earnings in the quarter ending December 31.
The stock, which has already been under pressure, dropped 19% soon after the numbers hit, with the decline soon reaching a 23% decline, shaving $200 billion from the company’s market value. Shares in Twitter and Snap got hit after the bell as well. Meta rose 1% during the regular trading day to close at $323 a share, on heavier-than-average trading volume.
Earnings per share of $3.67 on a diluted basis fell short of the consensus estimate of $3.85 and slid 5% from the same period a year ago. Revenue of $33.67 billion climbed 20% year-over-year and matched Street views.

January is officially the month of peak “new year, new you” marketing — and that means we’re all pledging to a fresh set of New Year’s resolutions (again). It shouldn’t come as a surprise that keeping our well-meaning promises will be an uphill battle: a past study by U.S. News & World Report suggests that nearly 80% of us will fall off the wagon by mid-February.
A more reasonable resolution might be to stop pursuing unattainable perfection in the form of “the best me” (say, losing 20 pounds in two...

In “Zappa,” actor-turned-documentary filmmaker Alex Winter has constructed an elaborate deep-dive into the sprawling career of Frank Zappa in his own words. The movie, now available in theaters and VOD, follows the iconic rock star through every stage of his life, from his youth to the last few years of life. Winter knows a thing or two about rock star mythologizing from the other side of his career, as the actor who plays Bill in the beloved “Bill and Ted” movies. But “Zappa” represents a departure from his other recent documentary projects, which have dealt with internet culture and online conspiracies.
Instead, the movie uses a complex assemblage of archival materials (including Zappa’s own home movies) to create a fascinating new window into the human behind the star. To that end, “Zappa” has much in common with “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” filmmaker Brett Morgen’s 2015 portrait of the ill-fated Nirvana frontman,...

"Honey, I'm birthing children all over this nation," Shangela Laquifa Wadley, aka D.J. Pierce, said during a phone interview on June 6. The effervescent drag queen - known for her three RuPaul's Drag Race appearances, A Star Is Born cameo, and "halleloo" catchphrase - is referring to her experience on the HBO docuseries, We're Here, which follows Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O'Hara, and, of course, Shangela as they host one-night-only drag shows with residents of various small towns. "The Wadleys are going on tour one day," Shangela added.
The six-episode season - which aired its finale earlier this month - takes the trio to towns in New Mexico, Missouri, Louisiana, and more. Each queen is responsible for coaching a different performer, and they range from drag regulars to novices and people who had never even seen a drag show.

Always Greener by Jrh Lawless features a cynical sci-fi world that pushes the limits of reality TV consumption and social satire. The book makes meta commentary on the real world outside the book while also showing the extremes that consumerism could reach in a plausible future.
It’s the groovy 70’s—the 2070’s, that is—and technology has advanced to the point where people have implanted special lenses in their eyes to access advanced Augmented Reality. This Ar doesn’t feature flinging of balls at a Pokemon sprite hovering awkwardly in real space, this technology is so ingrained in the public sphere that people cease to think of it as separate from their lives. I'd like to start by saying that I have always been a fan of Lucy Hale. She was the main reason I tuned into Pretty Little Liars all those years ago.
Before her breakout role as Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, Hale had a few memorable credits.
She was Robin Scherbatsky's little sister Katie on How I Met Your Mother Season 2 Episode 12, Justin's goth girlfriend Miranda on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place and Lena Kaligaris's little sister Effie on Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants 2.
Hale was even a member of the main cast on two short-lived series: The CW's Privledged and Bionic Woman. She had one of those faces that you felt like you had seen somewhere, even if you couldn't place it. She felt like someone famous.
And when she became Aria Montgomery on ABCfamily's Pretty Little Liars, she became a household name. Aria was one...

Troian Bellisario has been cast in one of the lead roles of the CBS drama pilot “Ways and Means.”
It was previously announced that Patrick Dempsey would star in the series, with Amanda Warren also being part of the cast. The show centers on a powerful congressional leader (Dempsey) who has lost faith in politics who finds himself working secretly with idealistic young congresswoman Claire (Bellisario) from the opposing party to subvert the hopelessly gridlocked system he helped create. Together, they’ll attempt to save American politics, if they don’t get caught.
Claire is a newly elected, progressive, idealistic freshman Democratic Congresswoman who leads with her intelligence and straightforwardness. She’s going to have to figure out how to merge her idealism with her ambition. She will either change Congress, or Congress will change her.

Following her performance at Bernie Sanders’ campaign rally in Houston Sunday, Soccer Mommy has released the third and final single from her album Color Theory, out this Friday via Loma Vista.
The track, “Bloodstream,” is the album opener, and a meditation on childhood loneliness and chasing down happiness. “Hydrangeas blooming of the branches of park trees/It’s a half-hearted calm — the way I’ve felt since I was 13,” Sophie Allison sings over a churning guitar that wouldn’t be out of place in a Nineties teen comedy. “‘Cause I may not feel it now,...

Futuristic stories tend to upend the usual ways we judge an effective story. Every detail of some fictional, far-off future is a storytelling choice in itself. The elements of the recognizable world that get left behind are just as much a part of building out a future world as what’s included or how people interact.
In the new Amazon series “The Feed,” there’s less of an initial attempt to come up with bizarre fashion choices or crazy-tech vehicles. The biggest change is the overall shift to fewer things and greater empty space. Office areas are sparse. Living rooms are bare. Even the streets seem less crowded. That’s due in major part to The Feed, a near-universal technology that works much in the way Google Glass was supposed to. Via a device implanted in each “enabled” user, people can send messages, watch video, even project augmented reality-like changes...

The television adaptation of The Feed -- based on the novel by Nick Clark Windo -- immediately thrusts viewers into a sci-fi psychological thriller set in a future that feels very real and not at all distant.
Talented veteran actors make up the cast of three-dimensional characters who -- at least in the six episodes available for review -- create solid, believable arcs that posit empathetic flaws into what could very easily have become stereotypical villains types.
While stereotypical villains can be a guilty delight to watch, The Feed takes the psychological intricacies of well-intended beings doing what they feel in their hearts is right, and pushes them through ill-fated journeys of what is perceived as selfishness and greed.
Modern technology is scary; we all know glitches and hackings can be detrimental to corporate and individual security.
When the hard drives, the internet, and all forms of media are placed into heads of civilians,...

For Troian Bellisario, fighting her eating disorder meant fighting her brain.
The actress says that in the thick of her anorexia, her mind was constantly pushing her to restrict herself more and more — and she still occasionally feels that need today.
“There is a part of my brain that defies logic. Once, it completely convinced me I should live off 300 calories a day, and at some point, it told me even that was too much,” Bellisario, 31, writes in Tuesday’s Lenny Letter.
“That part of my brain is my disease, and there was a time when it had absolute authority over me.
