Bruce Springsteen is releasing an entire 1978 show with the E Street Band in Houston, Texas. The release will benefit the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund, which will aid those affected by the recent devastation in Texas as well as in Florida.
The Houston show originally appeared as part of the Darkness on the Edge of Town box set. It captures the final leg of the Darkness tour, including the extended intro version of “Prove It All Night,” the rarely performed “Streets of Fire,” and Darkness outtakes “Fire” and “Because the Night.” It also features prototypes of The River’s “Independence Day,” “Point Blank” and “The Ties That Bind,” plus a rare September song, “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town.”
Houston was one of Bruce’s earliest springboards, which accounts for the presence here of early favorites “Fire” and “Saint in the City.”

Nothing fits the music documentary format quite so compellingly as a life cut tragically short. In addition to the ready-made dramatic arc, a subject who leaves this mortal coil before their time usually also leaves a certain amount of mystery in their wake, providing ample grist for filmmakers (and the folks they interview) to chew on.
Even when the hows and whys of an artist's tragic exit are a matter of uncontroversial record, questions of "What might have been?" inevitably linger over their prematurely truncated discography — in itself a far...

Ahead of the E Street Band's long-awaited return to Saturday Night Live this weekend, Bruce Springsteen stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday to talk The River reissue The Ties That Bind and his early rock band Steel Mill, which also boasted guitarist Steven Van Zandt. "We both had a lot more hair," Springsteen told Fallon after the host showed him a photo of Steel Mill onstage.

American music icon Bruce Springsteen has stood the test of time. For the 35th year anniversary of his seminal album, "The River," Springsteen is teaming with HBO to release a four CD, two Blu-Ray and coffee table book, along with new songs as part of a packaged boxed set. HBO will also air "The Ties That Bind" on November 27th (the same date as the box set's release) to help re-chronicle the Boss' 140 city U.S. and European "The River" tour. At 66, the revered singer/songwriter will give fans a peek at his artistic process, telling director Thom Zimny how he came up with such classics as "Hungry Heart" and "The River." This will be HBO's third Springsteen album documentary, following 2014's "High Hopes" and 2010's "The Promise." Thom Zimny also directed the previous films, with Springsteen serving as Executive Producer. "The Ties That Bind" will also be available on HBO Go and HBO Now.

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.
