Not my kind of movie! But...
tiagocampos-0291820 June 2019
I went to the theatre to watch this just to keep my family company. I expected to be bored for an hour and a half. This is not an epic movie with an epic story. Doesn't have award winning roles or a genius comedy. But it has such a good vibe to it and somewhat of a lesson to be learned for both youngsters and the elderly. I had to give it a good rating. I enjoyed this way more than I ever thought.

Entertaining feel good movie !

Poms- my Review Rating 6.5

After seeing Diane Keaton's last romp with the sisters film "Book Club "and loathing it I was reluctant to see another peppy feel good chronologically challenged "women's movie" or men's movie after the horrible recent " Swimming With Men movie" but this was much better ?

I just can't resist Jacki Weaver, possibly Australias most underrated Hollywood export ever who has forged ahead with a fabulous Hollywood career since Animal Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook which earned her 2 Oscar nominations.

I remember her from many stage performances in Australia like Born Yesterday and They're Playing Our Song." We don't often get to see her great sense of comedy.( in fact I remember her as a pop diva on Australian bandstand singing hits like My Boy Lollipop 🍭

In this film which she steals from Diane Keaton with her natural comedic talent she plays Sheryl a heart of gold rough diamond who befriends the sad scared (Want to be left alone Martha ) after she sells up her home and moves to a retirement community to die. They form a cheerleading club Poms and have a lot of fun and connection to other elderly women on the way. Yes it's another Let's Put on a Show and show em movie with a lightweight script but it has some very funny moments .

It's not a film for young people but unlike Book Club if has a heart . Its not a great film a little silly and sentimentality times but we enjoyed it . It certainly doesn't deserve some of the awful reviews I've read about it and as the couple in the lift said after the movie "wasn't it fun? So nice to go to a feel good movie "

and yes it was - Entertaining-

I didn't have high expectations before watching but I was surprised. Sure there were a few spots where story skips and plot has a few blatant holes. But overall a cute movie and definitely made me chuckle.

It's Touching

Somehow, a good point is made about cynicism. Cynical critics. As a career cynic, I melted at this flick. Too many fast transitions, but somehow, it worked.

As a movie, Poms is a pleasant enough diversion
tavm12 September 2019
My mom was very interested in watching this movie so I just checked this out at the library for her. My curiosity made me decide to watch it with her. Since it has Diane Keaton playing the leading role, I certainly thought it might be a little interesting to watch. She plays an elderly woman with no family who's experiencing a cancer scare but decides to not get treatment instead going to a nursing home to live the rest of her life. But someone there decides to befriend her and when that new friend discovers her old cheerleading outfit, that leads to them forming a new cheer team. I'll stop there and just say there are some funny lines and some touching moments. Poms Is no great shakes but it's a pleasant enough distraction.

Elderly ladies in a retirement community form a cheerleading squad.
TxMike7 November 2019
My wife and I watched this at home on BluRay from our local library. We weren't sure if it would be entertaining enough so agreed to watch the first 18 minutes and switch to something else if we weren't "invested."

The timer went off at 18 minutes, I stopped the movie, and asked if we should continue. My wife said "Yes, it is pretty entertaining."

I admit I was often entertained too, we are near the ages of the actresses and can identify loosely with the premise, although we still live in our own home in a conventional neighborhood.

Diane Keaton, who is 3 months younger than me, had money in the project, she is a producer. She also is the main character, Martha, who has been living in her NYC home for 40 years, has just gotten an unfavorable diagnosis and refuses to go the chemotherapy route. So she has an estate sale to get rid of everything and takes a road trip down to a modern retirement community in Georgia.

All that happens quickly as the movie opens, everything else happens at the retirement community. Martha just wants to be left alone, but they have a rule, you need to belong to at least one organization and if you can't find one that appeals to you then you can form a new one ... with the approval of the board. So she gets 7 other "girls" together and forms a pom-pom group, cheerleaders with no team to cheer for.

There are some interesting interactions, including with high school cheerleaders, there is an arc of friendship of Martha with the others. I would think this wouldn't interest the younger generation very much but I believe all of us over a certain age can find some things to enjoy about this movie.

Absolutely Terrible
fdbjr10 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Mean-spirited, snide, relying on conflicts that would never occur in real life. You know nothing of the central character (Martha, Diane Keaton), who apparently has lived her whole life without making a single human contact. One other woman does nothing but smile witlessly the entire movie. Above all, the plot turns on dumb supervisors, dumb husbands, dumb sons, cardboard villains who express opposition in a manner that was probably not even done in the 50's. I was expecting a comedy about self-overcoming, older women realizing despite the passing of years that they still have potential, can even be sexy. There was none of that. Add to that the fact that there were next to jokes, and you have one of the dullest, most pointless wastes of 90 minutes you will ever see.

Better Than Expected
akenyeres13 May 2019
I took my mom to this for Mother's Day as per her request, and fully expected a very hokey chick flick with zero plot, etc. To my delight it ended up being very funny, a bit of a tear-jerker at one point, and overall a cute movie that I'd probably watch again with my mom or girlfriends. I'd call it lightly empowering for females, especially senior women, and overall just really fun.

Poms (2019)
rockman18218 May 2019
Diane Keaton is always fantastic in any project she's involved in. Even in this stage in her career. I liked Book Club from last year and felt like Poms was in the same category. A film about older woman being funny and bonding with one another over an activity. Its a new genre of film, really. I wanted to see Poms because it looked like a simple fun way to kill time. It still managed to exceed my expectations. This is a fun 90 minutes at the cinema, filled with laughs and all around sweetness.

The film is about a woman with cancer, who moves into a retirement community. In the beginning she is closed off and not excited but they she begins to pursue a passion of her past: cheerleading. She recruits 7 other elderly friends and soon they go from doing cheerleading for fun, to entering professional competitions. The woman begins to understand and revel in the bond she has with these women while also learning the importance of living your life now.

Diane Keaton and especially Jackie Weaver are fabulous in this film. The women are generally all lovable and have quirks to them that make them funny. Admittedly, the script is simple and often unremarkable but the characters excel in bringing the film to life. Side note, Alisha Boe is very attractive and a joy to behold on the screen but I felt like she was pretty bad in this film. It doesn't require a lot and is just a minor point.

The film isn't really about the cheerleading competition. Its not a film about the activity like Bring It On. This is more so a backdrop for the development of the womanhood and the bond between the characters. The film is sweet and cute and funny for a good amount of time. Its basically nice harmless fun, which is necessary especially in an action packed month full of blockbusters.

Something special.
derrickharp14 May 2019
I really enjoyed this movie. Sure it's not bringing anything new to the genre, but I wasn't expecting it too be anything more than it was. All of the actresses have lived wonderful lives and have accomplished so much in their careers it's great to see such strong women in a movie. I could be a little biased, as I just recently lost my grandmother to cancer, and this movie reminded me why I loved her so much. This is like the perfect movie to watch when you're having a lazy day at the house and want something feel good while you stay cozy. Like a big warm blanket. In my opinion, those are some of the best movie out there.

It's simply a "feel good" movie
shelletieman6 September 2019
Too often lately ppl act as if movies should involve a lesson or a strong message instead of just being entertaining. This movie is about being entertained. And if one insists on needing a message then: seniors aren't limited by age. This movie was fun, campy, and fairly predictable but it was clear that the cast was having fun. Seeing them have fun and the antics that ensued caused me to have fun.

Not for everyone
oldcarbuff28 May 2019
First up, I should mention that we went to the movies to see another show, but were directed to the wrong theatre. My reaction was to head out in search of the right place, but as my wife wanted to see this we decided to stay.

At the risk of being seen as a grumpy old bloke, all I can say is that it was an afternoon of my life I shan't be able to live again. Essentially this is a "chick flick" for ageing women, and my wife loved it. I'll admit there were a few points where I managed a chuckle too, but beyond that I kept thinking of other places I could be.

"Hey, I'm glad you're not cat food."
classicsoncall10 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have mixed feelings about this one. The message is supposed to be inspirational for those getting on in years, but it was tough for me to relate to these old women, even if I'm about their same age. I'm a guy so that probably has something to do with it. The cast of aging cheerleaders was somewhat surprising. Led by Diane Keaton, it was interesting to see Rhea Perlman as part of the squad. I haven't seen her in anything in a long time, and I thought it would have been a hoot if the husband she murdered was played by Danny DeVito; why didn't the film makers come up with that idea? And Pam Grier? She of Tarantino's "Jackie Brown"! I'd say that was pretty eclectic casting. You know, it might sound crazy, but that whole idea of sending your remains up in a fireworks display after cremation is actually a real thing. What's even crazier is you can get a home kit for your own private memorial. I say 'your own', but you'll need some help on that score. Anyway, I'm glad the story ended the way it did because if the Sun Springs Cheerleaders hadn't wowed the crowd, it would have been a disappointment. What could have been a tearjerker ending was handled well enough that you didn't have to shed one because of the message.

Needed to be edited better
moov_e_c_er20 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Some parts were simply long and boring. Some was hilarious. Most parts were good/cute. The commercials shows this is more like Pitch Perfect and building to competition but is more like wandering lost through a forest and then deciding to do something from years ago and then get together for competition. This should have been much shorter movie, better setup, more direct, more challenging plot and then pay off to competition. It should have been amazing but was just OK. money was not lacking but energy was. It had really great moments but lagged for at least 40%.

Touching , funny, good movie
hipps00112 May 2019
Yes it is formulaic. It's the whole rocky underdog female version.. But it has so many wonderful moments. Diane Keaton is her usual wonderful self.We laughed . We cried. Will it win an Oscar, no . But if you want a touching sweet movie that reaffirms what is important ion life go see this movie.

Painfully bad
michellebodner56 January 2020
So badly made. Not funny, wasted talent, no story or character development and badly directed. Diane Keaton was painful to watch, the woman leads a team of cheerleaders but can not dance! Pam Grier could dance circles around everyone and is completely wasted as a nothing background character. Just embarrassed for everyone involved, so sad to think this is what some people think older women are like.

Not for everyone but your missing out!
jacob-olinger-891097 August 2019
I've watched more than 2,000 movies and this one here is good. It keeps the movie simple. It's silly, funny, and an easy watch. No complex storytelling or in depth character creation. However, the movie does a great job at not tanking to a bland film. You got fun, drama, jokes, dancing, and love.

This is a movie I would've watched with my grandmother and would have enjoyed it at any age watching it with her. However, my wife and I watched it at 25 & 23 and both liked this movie. I can pretty much watch any genre and liked this one. Maybe it's not a summer blockbuster, or one you will watch a dozen times over. But nonetheless watch it!

Not only is this a good movie but it also does prove a point and that's to "keep moving" don't grow old and do the same mundane stuff every day till you die. Enjoy life, get out, do something crazy and fun. Enjoy the life you've been given. Enjoy the company around you.

calibrations
SnoopyStyle3 September 2019
Martha (Diane Keaton) is alone in the world and dying of cancer. The love of her life is her late cheerleader mother. She moves into a retirement community in Georgia to die. Her neighbor Sheryl (Jacki Weaver) is annoyingly nosy. Community Vicki (Celia Weston) is annoyingly dictatorial. One day, Martha decides to start a cheerleading group.

This is perfectly nice. It's very standard. It has a few odd laughs. I like the cast. It's fine. It's perfectly fine. There are some calibration problems. First problem is Martha. Why is she moving to that community? It needs to set up the southern belles. It needs to set up her loneliness. She can be sad but she can't be bitter. She can't be giving people side eyes. If she's pissed, it's incompatible with her starting up the cheer squad. There's no reason for that guy to call Chloe that. It turns a reasonable villain into a cartoon villain. It's too bad since the mother son situation starts out very relatable. I'd rather he call them a cult. That would be funnier. Vicki is almost the same but Martha does probably anger her when they first meet. I want Chloe and Ben to do something more. Rhea Perlman should zero in more on her husbandcide. It's a funny bit and she should be mindlessly commenting on it. Mostly, this is a perfectly nice comedy with a few calibration issues and somewhat cliché.
