“Life-changing” is the kind of hyperbolic descriptor thrown around all too easily in the world of publishing, but it could quite reasonably be applied to Naoki Higashida’s nonfiction bestseller “The Reason I Jump.” Written when Hagashida was just 13 years old, it’s a unique account of autistic spectrum disorder from the inside, giving voice to a community frequently described as “non-verbal” and dispelling multiple misconceptions about the way they see and feel the world around them. Translating that perspective-shifting achievement to the screen is a tall order, but Jerry Rothwell’s documentary of the same title does so with imagination and grace: Not so much a direct adaptation of Higashida’s book as an application of its insights to the lives of five other young people diagnosed with Asd, it finds supple visual and sonic language to bring sensory dimension to their experience.

To have both a Tarantino and a Scorsese in 2019 was a treat. Never fear, there’s plenty to look forward to in the year to come. Here we run down some of the undeclared movies (most of which are in post-production) that could have festivals drooling in 2020.
Nb: Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley doesn’t shoot until early spring so we’re not expecting that to be released in 2020. And while we’d love to see Tenet at a festival, the film’s July release date indicates otherwise. A Christopher Nolan movie hasn’t opened at a festival in many years, anyway.
Mank
David Fincher’s anticipated drama-biopic follows legendary screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of Orson Welles’ iconic 1941 movie Citizen Kane. The Netflix pic stars Gary Oldman in the title role with Lily Collins, Amanda Seyfried and Charles Dance, and Tom Burke as Welles.

I've been fascinated with the life and work of legendary filmmaking pioneer Charlie Chaplin ever since I was a teenager. I read so many books about him and his life and I love the Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin. The stuff he was doing with filmmaking in Hollywood was innovative, entertaining, and the stories he told were wonderful.
Altitude and Showtime have announced that they will be developing a documentary called Chaplin, from directors Peter Middleton and James Spinney, three-time BAFTA nominees for Notes on Blindness. The doc is described as follows:
Chaplin is both the ultimate rags-to-riches story and a revealing, poignant and definitive portrait of cinema’s most iconic figure. Groundbreaking, controversial, outspoken, visionary; for decades he was the most famous man in the world – but who was the real Charlie Chaplin?
The doc is getting support from the BFI National Archive’s world-class collections and Chaplin’s World by Grévin.

History-focused 28th edition of documentary and factual content event runs June 19-22 in La Rochelle.
Upcoming documentaries exploring the life of Mikhail Gorbachev, the space race and Jackie Kennedy’s anti-segregationist work will be among the projects being presented at this year’s Sunny Side of the Doc (Ssd) this year.
The 28th edition of the documentary and factual content market and conference, running June 19-22 on the historic docks of the picturesque French port town of La Rochelle, is putting the onus on history this year.
The focus is in keeping with Ssd’s four-year cycle alternating the annual theme between history, science, human interest and wildlife. But the fact the history theme falls this year is also timely, comments founding director Yves Jeanneau.
“The phrase ‘reinventing history’ sums up what’s going on at the moment. We’re witnessing a renewal and rejuvenation in the way history is being told, both in terms...

New fund to back at least 12 documentaries per year.
The British Film Institute (BFI) is seeking a partner to help deliver its new BFI Documentary Fund.

Each year the fund will provide monetary awards to a minimum of 12 documentary projects by way of development, production or completion.
They will also provide pitch training to a minimum of 24 teams of filmmakers, with the goal being to help them develop their film pitches to help them secure funding (whether through BFI pots or not).
Ben Roberts, director of the BFI Film Fund, explained the thinking behind enlisting a partner to held deliver the fund:

Each year, the Tribeca Film Festival fills out its schedule with a variety of events that extend far past the typical film fest fare, including their signature Tribeca Talks program and a continuing bent towards the possibilities of Virtual Reality. This year’s slate is no different, offering up intimate chats between industry luminaries (did you know that Robert Rodriguez and Barbra Streisand are pals? they are!) and special screening opportunities for projects both new (Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s “The Vietnam War”) and classic (a “Godfather” one-two punch). There’s a little something for everyone here.
This year’s Tribeca Film Festival takes place April 19 – 30. Check out some of our must-attend events below.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

The BAFTAs are the British equivalent of the Oscars, and although the awards are given overseas, they still factor into the American awards race.
Yet again, we see the same three films having a strong presence here: La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. However, BAFTA is also spreading the love to other awards favourites like Arrival, Nocturnal Animals, and Lion.
Some interesting omissions here include Denzel Washington for Fences. His co-star Viola Davis is nominated in the supporting category, but it looks as though BAFTA went for other potential Oscar contenders Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic. They're also the first major awards body to nominate Jake Gyllenhaal's leading performance in Nocturnal Animals.

With little over a month to go until the big night, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled the 2017 BAFTA nominations, and it’s Damien Chazelle’s La La Land that leads the charge.
Following its historic turn at last weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony – Chazelle’s old-timey musical walked away with seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress gongs for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – La La Land continues its strong run in this year’s awards season with BAFTA nominations in all of the major categories.
For Best Film, it’ll be competing against Arrival, Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight – three formidable and worthy opponents that have collected scores of nominations between them – along with I, Daniel Blake, Ken Loach’s profound and perceptive portrayal of unemployment and its subsequent stigma in northerly England. By and large, the official BAFTA...
